Random set of the day: Sea Creeper

Today's random set is 6109 Sea Creeper, released during 1998. It's one of 11 Aquazone sets produced that year. It contains 79 pieces and 1 minifig, and its retail price was US$10.
It's owned by 1,219 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $35.00, or eBay.

I have a few of those large stingrays. Looking them up was difficult at first until I found a tiny part number on it. To my surprise it was classified under baseplate!

The face on that sub could pretty easily pass for a barraki.

The third iteration of Aquazone (which itself has an interesting back-story, because the second iteration were the three sets in '97 that were only available in North America IIRC) really intrigued me, because of the ambiguity of the story.
Unlike the Aquasharks (who seemed to just be pirates with submarines), the Stingray faction looked like undersea monsters, while even the Hydronaut heroes seemed darker and more malevolent. I only ever bought the smallest Hydronaut set, but I wish I'd bought more.

I still think it’s UK name, simply “Crab”, makes more sense. Look at it, with its scuttley legs and flailing arms, clearly crustacean inspired
One of the surprising number of late 90's sets that didn't appear in S-at-H catalogs and came with or without a large non-System object (as described in other comments).

I love how the Stingray vehicles resemble animal mechs. I never managed to get any, but they look fun if not a bit late 90s in color blocking.
In fact I didn't know about the two later Aquazone waves until I had access to the internet years later. I didn't have a 1998 or 1999 catalog and while I had those pamphlets with some of the year's sets from the sets I got during those years and some of the 1999 sets were in the 2000 catalog... the Insectoids and Aquazone themes weren't in those.
For those who don't remember or weren't around:
in the 90s and I believe 80s, small sets came with an A4 sized pamphlet. Usually with the relevant theme taking one side and some highlights of other themes in stripes on the other. They didn't show the full lineup either.
Larger sets came with mini-catalogs. These weren't exhaustive but basically showed all main sets of the year and some sets from yesteryear. They showed full lineups.
I believe the mini catalogs ran to at least 2003. The pamphlets to 2004 (I have some from Knights Kingdom II and Harry Potter).
AFAIK they were phased out because of the internet and because at shops they now had those square bi-yearly catalog booklets, which started around 2002.
This is a lovely set with a great print on the canopy and rare trans-neon green grabbing arm pieces. Personally, I vastly prefer the set's other name "Crab" as it fits better with the theme of the other Stingrays sets. (6160 "Sea Scorpion" should also be "Lobster", imo).
I thought the first Aqua-zone/Aqua-sharks were the best but I did want the version of this with the giant stingray.
Underwater Blacktron.
The old chrome parts were so shiny and bright, but they flaked easily! It is hard to find any in LEGO fan collections which haven't chipped or lost parts of its sheen in the years since.
It's ugly cute.
