Reminds me of the plane in AIRPLANE!

Wow, this is *really* vintage. The last passenger flight done with a 727 was in January 2019, and according to Google, only 38 are still in use by cargo transport companies.

I have a blue version of this type of design, 657 . I appreciate the printed bricks for the windows.

@TheOtherMike: Rest: "It's an entirely differently kind of flying..."
Although @Murdoch17 isn't completely wrong, to quote 'the great' Johnny: "Oh, it's a big pretty white plane with red stripes, curtains in the windows and wheels and it looks like a big Tylenol." :D

    Surely, you can't be serious.

But that's not important right now.

You just have to love AIRPLANE. So many memorable quotes.
Just like Spaceballs. Or Life of Brian.

Perhaps I should watch fewer comedy movies and TV series... ;-)

I love the photography for this. Traffic control tower in the back, Saturn V ready to launch. I bet some of these sets were inflight premiums you'd buy while flying in the airplane itself.

I've got 698, the third version of this set, which for some reason isn't called 727 but just 'Boeing Aeroplane'. Loved it!"

That's the version I had - I remember being annoyed (as annoyed as you can be as a 4 year old anyway) that the printed bricks couldn't be used for anything else and a lot of the parts couldn't be repurposed for anything else either as they were specialised shapes - I must have had a vision into the future!

Late last year my sister, kind of her, picked up a bag of LEGO from a charity shop for me - it was all vintage bricks, included amongst them about 8 of these printed bricks for windows. I spent about an hour here on Brickset looking for what sets they came from. I like them.

@Duq: I hadn't noticed it had those wings until you posted that, because the picture of 698 is from a different angle. I miss those wings

The cover art is quite striking on this set--really moody and dramatic, but balanced by the white box and the white plane, which is nonetheless quite visible.

You’ve got to love a commercial tie in for an airline that went bankrupt 15 years ago. It’s kind of like Prince of Persia, Lone Ranger and all the other sets based on box office bombs.

Ah, one of these. This group of aircraft are the 70s equivalent and VSotD of that one airplane from 2003 that has 20 variants that keep popping up as a RSotD.

But for this one there was no little Timmy to be ran over by the plane. Let alone noses like Timmy's! In that sense it was a much more civilized era.

An iconic plane from a bygone era, where 3 inefficient engines and a flight engineer (3rd pilot in the cockpit) were required to operate a narrow-body, mid-range transport airplane...

While it was staring to happen anyway, 9/11 was the catalyst for the airlines getting rid of this airplane in one fell swoop; the lack of demand enabled everyone to park these older models in the boneyards, and fill the gaps with more efficient 737's and A320's once people started flying again.

My dad flew the 727 for several years as captain back in the 70's and 80's for Western Airlines; it seemed like every US airline used this as a backbone of the domestic fleet at the time, either the short-bodied -100 or the longer -200 version (this set probably represents the -200). Due to the weight distribution (all the engines in the back) and the position of the main landing gear, this plane was kind of a beast to land; of all the many flights I took on a 727 through the years, I don't remember more than a small handful where the pilot didn't noticeably bounce the plane during landing. In fact, I only ever flew on planes Dad was flying as captain 4 times, and one of them was on a 727. He was a great pilot, but he bounced that landing so hard that I was laughing at him for the rest of the day...

Never had this set or its clones, but when I discovered it's existence I was amazed that LEGO saved those wing molds for years before the town airport sets were launched in the mid 1980's; would the company save old molds like that these days?

Never stop! without comedy, life would be too boring and dull.

Back then, they didn’t throw out any serviceable molds. These days, they’re required to eliminate a mold to bring a new one into service.

"It's an entirely different kind of flying"

Strangely enough, it sounded like the worlds only propeller version of the 707....

    By in United States,

A friend of mine gave me this set as a birthday present about 15 years ago. He kept the box, instructions and stickers all together in perfect condition. He said it was purchased when he was a child on a Sterling plane while on vacation in Europe. How he kept the set together, and in such good condition is beyond me.

This set/box/instructions is one of the stars of my Lego collection.
