Fun set.
I use a couple of 6 stud long plates to keep the Vulture Droid's wings/legs separated and makes it sturdier for display purposes. One thing of note though, R7 slots in, but there are no jumpers below to hook into, he just goes sliding out of you try spinning (it's a good trick). Not the best design there.
I'd say it's a bit of an improvement over Anakin's Starfighter from before, the function of the flickfire missiles is better, and it feels a bit more cohesive with Obi-Wan's Delta-7 from 2002. The stickers are a pain though, and they're on the transparent plastic, which is probably a better sticker material, but the printing on it is a bit thin, and the stickers are fairly smaller than the parts, so the design of the Jedi emblem does get a bit messy, even on the printed parts on the slopes, the printing just doesn't go to the edges like many prints are often able to do.
So yeah, fun set, but it's far from perfect. It wouldn't be until the next Starfighter, which was Plo Koon's, that I thought they perfected the Delta-7B fighters, and then they made Mace's a bit weird, and then tried too hard to be too accurate after with Saesee Tiin and so on. I'd rather have something that feels right in the hand and captures the spirit more than absolute accuracy.

I always wanted this set for that astromech

I really want a simple vulture Droid set again, just like 15$-20$ with a battle Droid and maybe a super since they've been uncommon for a while

As a kid, I saw this set on sale at an independent Australian online LEGO Store, and really wanted it. However, it sold out before Christmas (this was in 2011), so I got 7749 Echo Base instead. I still quite like this one though, even if it was on the overpriced side.

I don't own any Vulture Droids, but I'd say this version looks the best. Not oversized with a shoehorned-in pilot, seamlessly opening and closing wings/legs and head. It's dependent on stickers, but every minifig-scale Vulture droid has been dependent on stickers/prints.

I had this one... I liked the Astromech droid. The ship was quickly turned Imperial gray using my limited personal collection. It was sadly torn apart by the time the Imperial V-wing's of 2011 rolled around. (set 7915 ) It was my biggest regret not keeping to together long enough for when that set showed up...

Alas, hindsight is 20/20.

With 36 sets, Star Wars was busy that year. Small sets like this with pricey individual figs are the main reason I can’t complete my CW collection without re-mortgaging the house.

@MeisterDad:
As long as you don’t mind buying Used for the astromech, you can get all four for about $30. That’s actually not bad, considering the age and the fact that most astromechs are exclusive to one set.

I've got this one; the vulture droid in this is great, as other people have said. I think I got this in order to get Ahsoka, since I already had Anakin's starfighter. The buzz droids are pretty fun too, even if they're not nearly as accurate as the newer versions.

Had quite an adventure to get this one - it went exclusive to a store that only had regional locations, so that was an hour and a half on a train to the edge of the electric network, to where it turned out a store had closed but they hadn't bothered updating their website, so another hour on a bus through the southern highlands to the next nearest store, FINALLY got the set, then asked the cashier how you got back to Sydney from there (diesel intercity, turned out). Honestly if it hadn't been Ahsoka I wouldn't have bothered.

I used to joke about how all the deadly sharks, snakes, and spiders were proof that humans were never meant to live in Australia, but maybe I need to update that joke…

Damn I missed some good sets in my Dark Age.

I also completely missed the boat with The Clone Wars until early 2021. Totally my fault, but now my life is much better having seen the whole 7 season run... twice!

If they made a set just like this again, I'd be all over it like fried eggs on bacon.

Clone war faces were just a wrong choice.

Hurray for Ahsoka though, she badass!

By in United Kingdom,

Those leg pieces always looked weird for buzz droids. They have little crabby legs, a few battle droid arm pieces would work better than battle droid legs. I assume it’s those legs just so you can actually stick them onto ships like they’re crawling around on it

Great set. Good price. Would be a retail price of £89.99 nowadays...

I remember briefly considering getting this. At the time I could pick lego for 50 euro for christmas. I recall it costing that much at the time over here. I quickly reconsidered because you would only get these two vehicles and one minifig, back when you could get more bang for your buck by getting a few smaller sets. I still think 50 euro (2009 value) was expensive for what it is, as you will have to get both if you want either.
I was impressed by the remote firing of the flick fire missles. But mind you, this was only the second year of their existance and I always like built-in mechanisms for action features over just slapping launchers on vehicles.

@Norikins, all except for the very first version, 7111 Droid Fighter. That one has... other issues. But at least it's printed!

That first one is actually much better in walking mode with the configuation that JangBricks showed in his review of it

Fried eggs _on_ bacon? Did you grow up in a household full of bacon-thieves that you need to hide it under eggs?

By in United States,

I have this set! Unfortunately, my younger brother (who was 7 at the time) absolutely destroyed the Vulture Droid. I wonder if I can scour my parts collection and rebuild it...

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Seeing this image brings me slight discomfort as I have the set and really like it but it is discolored. Maybe I should try that Jangbricks methods of restoring the white bricks, someday.
