Where exactly is the bandit on the roof planning to escape to? From the looks of things he’s planning to run off the jail roof and plummet several metres to the ground.

Howdy! I'm a cowboy! Bang bang! Bang bang bang bang. Shoot shoot shoot bullet bullet gun. Zap zap zap pow. Zap pow...

We haven’t had us a good quality western theme in a while. Last I remember was Lone Ranger from 2013 which only half counts. Need me some cowboys

Easily the funniest scene sequence of both movies.

By in Australia,

Such a cool set! It's a shame we couldn't get a set like this even if just for the 90th anniversary. A big set with multiple buildings of a Western town would be pretty cool.

I understand that including 'Indians' thesedays is problematic, but I don't see why we can't just have cowboys and bandits then.

By in United States,

Ah, the remake of the set I got for Christmas in 1996. I wonder if LEGO substituted out any pieces in this edition like they did for other re-released sets like Main Street or Century Skyway.

I'd say more about this set because it is fun, but I think I will save it for when the original 6755 is featured on RSotD.

That's the sheriff, leaping off the roof and onto his trusty steed!
He might be running away from the actual bandits, they've got him outnumbered after all.

I remember when the original set came out in 1996, my mind completely blown by the spring loaded jail wall that you could blow off with a “dynamite” tile.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Fun fact: With LEGO, you can modify the jail to become escape proof! It's true!

Booze. That looks like a barrel of Statesman bourbon.

I always liked the re-use of the Ice Planet 2002 face print for the white-hatted cowboy.

@SideSalad: No, @Monopoly is talking about the bandit on the roof of the jail, who unlike White Hat (who is not the sheriff, the sheriff is the guy with a rifle), doesn't seem to have a waiting steed.

The one downside to this set is the Sheriff sticker over multiple bricks. But is it a downside? Today it would be several stickers on adjacent panels which would be riddled with 1-2 gaps, so I’d prefer this.

Gravatar

Cowboy Red Shirt looks like Lloyd of Ninjago fame.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I think one of the best aspects of this set is the reclining chair the sheriff has.

By in United States,

Many hours were spent on the floor with the original release. And then later on, the Aliens came and visited...those were the days.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This set is 1/2 the price of the 1996 original.

I think it's important to note that in the era of 2002, Lego decimated the Town theme and this set is a nice stand out of the sets of that era. I would love to read a Lego history writer's comments on this era. The Town (and probably others) were so bad, that there were many re-releases around this time including Fort Legorado. Perhaps all talent was diverted to Star Wars.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I was JUST the right age for the Wild West theme. I loved every set so much and was lucky enough to own the entire first wave, including Fort Legoredo.

All of the sets are iconic, IMO. The mine might be my favorite, but this set is nearly as good.

@bue_car:
And finally, this year, Daniel Craig gets his first minifig to go with the dozens that Harrison Ford has been racking up over 23 years.

Ooh, Olivia Wilde also got a minifig several years ago, and Paul Dano got one last year. Sam Rockwell _almost_ got one, so there’s hope yet!

Hence "Cowboys and Aliens" a movie that I like quite a bit considering a dismal 44% on Rotten Tomatoes and a financial flop at the time (2014).

I would definitely like to see a "Legacy" theme in which Lego would produce 2-3 sets per years coming from: Space, Castle, Pirates, Adventurers, Western, Aquanauts, etc (not all set would have to be from the same theme).

Hey, I have this one! Love that exploding wall feature.

Like lots of folks here I’m not big on STAMPs, and when I got this set I didn’t apply that one. That was early after my emergence from my dark ages, though, when I had a tiny fraction of the sets and parts I now do, and the bricks that sticker connects are pretty ordinary ones (except in being old gray, of course, but apart from that…). I’ve therefore been thinking that if / when I rebuild this I’ll finally apply that sticker, since I don’t need those bricks for building other things so much as I did then.

By in Canada,

Wait...the 'Sheriff's' done so many crimes, he's got his own 'Lock-Up'???...I'm confused....does this have something to do with yesterday's set...:\(:))

Seriously though, although 'Western' isn't really 'my thing'; I can appreciate the genre/setting, and even see the potential for 'crossovers' and such...just don't make 'em robots; unless you're going "Lego Movie" with it. :D

I've heard the new Jordan Peele movie is another alien-western.

I've been grabbing those LR sets whenever I can score a good deal. Those are well-designed with nice minifigs. I was just able to nab an almost-complete 79108.

By in Poland,

I mainly remember Western from the Lego Chess video game same as Pirates, but I liked it nonetheless.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I have the original, what a fun set and a great theme western was. Don't think we will see its like again as there would be too much shouting from the p.c. crowd.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

The exploding wall feature is such a fun one. Sets back then did so much with the limited parts palet from the time, it was just so charming. All you need was one of those shock absorbers and you could build it too!

Western was great with that. The card game dual trapdoors feature in Fort Legoredo was also a standout. Depending on how the table turns, either either one player falls in jail or the other player falls into an escape tunnel outside of the fort!
And the hidden staches of coins are always fun too.
I might not be the target audience anymore, but I always love a good simple play feature like those.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I never got this set, or really any of the Western sets, but that insert-the-dynamite-wall-go-boom feature looks so much fun

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Need to be retitled, "Sherrifs, Lock up!"

Gravatar
By in Australia,

It kinda looks like the white-hatted cowboy (who I always assumed was the deputy) is trying to jump from the roof onto the horse, but from the angle? He looks like he's going to land, crotch-first, on the rifle butt.

Which I imagine isn't a pleasant way to start your day.

From my memory, there never was any controversy with the native American sets LEGO produced. They lived peacefully and were never integrated into the cowboy and bandit sets. It was basically its own separate theme. The only thing they had to watch out for was snakes. Lots of snakes

And yet, no one bats an eye at the atrocities of pirates and medieval Knights. This is LEGO, it doesn't have to be historically correct or realistic. It's just a setting. Whether kids want to recreate a bank heist or a lovely Sunday horseback ride is up to them.

By in United Kingdom,

Seem to be one of the hardest City themes to find sets from which is a shame as look like a lot of fun, even if I don't really understand why the jail cell is not in the jail?

Gravatar
By in United States,

@ambr: That would be because it's not a City (or Town) theme.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I remember seeing this in the 2002 Shop @ home catalogues as a kid and thinking it looked cool. Never did get it though; back then, we only ordered things from online on special occasions, and nowhere local stocked the Legends line so I never saw the set in stores (and I'd missed the original Western line by a couple of years so I never saw that version either).

If I had seen it then, though, I might well have picked it up. Never been into cowboys and such, but it just looks like a very fun set, which would have been more than good enough reason for me back then!

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Spend so much time with the Western theme as a kid ! Great times and great lego theme...hope to see a return of the Western theme.

Gravatar
By in France,

The original was my first Cowboy set. And I wanted the others so badly. Especially the Bank so that I'd have a fuller cowboy city, but my parents/grand-parents couldn't find it. I guess I already had the modular bite back then, and it'd take 25 more years before I'd scratch it...

Gravatar

$.175/piece for this set? Whoa, this thing was way overpriced for what it was.

@StyleCounselor:
It is. I sat through a trailer at the theater on Tuesday. Or rather, I should say it’s presented as one. There’s always the possibility there’s something else going on, since they never show you any actual aliens in the trailer. Anyways, the setting’s a bit more modern than C&A.

@chuckschwa:
“There’s a snake in my moccasin!”

Anyways, the issue is that major conflicts during the Westward Expansion often involved one or more indigenous populations. Castle is pretty strictly a bunch of Euro-styled factions squabbling amongst themselves (plus some orcs, trolls, dwarves, and undead skeletons). Pirates is primarily between Euro-styled navies and pirates, with the lone exception of the Islanders subtheme, but they were a late addition that wasn’t strictly necessary for the theme to work (and indeed have never been reprised outside of CMF/Ninjago). There are tons of Western stories that don’t involve any native characters, so one could argue that they aren’t strictly necessary for a Western theme either, but they’re a lot more conspicuous in their absence than Islanders would be for Pirates.

'White Hat' is called Deputy Danny. The Sheriff has had different names depending on Region. In the US He was called Wild Wyatt West, in the UK Sheriff Duke and in Continental Europe Sheriff Silver.

The bandits are Flatfoot Thompson (Red) and Dewey Cheatum (Green).

This beautifully designed homage to historical America depicts the citizenry as somewhat less armed than they actually are today.

Oh, well, if they have first and last names, they’re all safe. Sam Rockwell established that. Ooh, but wait! Deputy Danny only has a title and (probably) a first name. And he’s about to give himself a lead enema. Maybe that’s why his hair turned white…
