Review: 75336 Inquisitor Transport Scythe

Posted by ,

Members of the Inquisitorius travel across the galaxy using TIE Interceptors, TIE Reapers and also TIE Advanced Prototypes. Obi-Wan Kenobi introduces another such vehicle, known as the Scythe, which transports groups of Inquisitors when necessary.

75336 Inquisitor Transport Scythe renders the sinister appearance of this vessel brilliantly, recalling the angular exterior of 75156 Krennic's Imperial Shuttle and employing similar building techniques to maximise internal space. Four new minifigures are also provided, so the Scythe appears to be among the best summer sets!

Minifigures

Obi-Wan Kenobi appears in three summer sets and this version takes inspiration from his attire on Tatooine, hardly resembling the character's traditional Jedi garb. The dark tan poncho looks splendid and I love the sand blue shirt underneath, which introduces some colour, without losing the earthy shades associated with Tatooine's desolate terrain.

Moreover, the dark brown belt, trousers and gloves correspond with the onscreen character and this hair component also looks superb, capturing realistic texture. I think the dark orange colour appears slightly too bright in relation to the series, although many Obi-Wan minifigures employ the same hair colour and I can understand the wish to maintain consistency between them.

The double-sided head displays dark orange facial hair, alongside fairly neutral and determined expressions. 75334 Obi-Wan Kenobi vs. Darth Vader features the same updated head and Obi-Wan's classic lightsaber is similarly repeated. However, this figure should also have included a blaster pistol.

The live-action appearance of the Grand Inquisitor provoked controversy when his design was revealed, noticeably deviating from the established Pau'an species. Thankfully, minifigure form disguises this inconsistency and the leader of the Inquisitorius appears suitably menacing, with pale skin and piercing red eyes!

However, I dislike the noticeable gaps between the Inquisitor's shoulders and his armour, which the prior Grand Inquisitor minifigure avoided. Moreover, the red stripe on this character's chest is printed slightly off-centre, but his insignia looks great. The decoration across the torso and legs compares favourably with the onscreen villain too, perfectly finished with an elegant cape.

As shown throughout their appearances, the Inquisitors share similar garb. The prominent Third Sister, also known as Reva, accordingly wears a black cape to match the Grand Inquisitor, but her attire lacks bulky shoulder armour and features fewer grey highlights than other Inquisitorius members. Among existing hair components, I think the chosen element works well, although its design does not allow an alternative expression.

Fifth Brother, like the Grand Inquisitor, has appeared in minifigure form previously. Once again though, this minifigure shares little with its predecessor, wearing darker armour and reflecting the many differences between the Fifth Brother's animated and live action designs. His shoulder armour looks excellent and I appreciate the distinctive headgear too, which does return from the 2016 minifigure.

Clips are included for the Grand Inquisitor and the Fifth Brother to store their lightsabers on their backs, as shown in the series. These pearl dark grey lightsaber hilts were introduced in 75082 TIE Advanced Prototype and look fantastic, so I welcome their return. Of course, two trans-red blades are provided for each lightsaber as well.

The Completed Model

Unlike the delicate Lambda-class Shuttle, most commonly associated with high-ranking Imperial officials, the enigmatic Inquisitorius require a more understated vessel. The Scythe certainly fits that role, shrouded in black armour, while also maintaining the established Imperial style. I love its dramatic angles and the model is effectively scaled for play, measuring 37cm in length.

As soon as 75336 Inquisitor Transport Scythe was revealed, comparisons with 75156 Krennic's Imperial Shuttle began. The shared colour scheme and hull shape are instantly identifiable and these models also incorporate similar construction techniques, which is hardly surprising given both shuttles were designed by Hans Burkhard Schlömer.

Wedge plates are seamlessly aligned throughout this model, closing any potential gaps between panels and capturing an accurate shape. The narrow prongs towards the front look marvellous and the transitions between angled surfaces are essentially perfect, making superb use of small ball joints immediately in front of the cockpit.

Characters board the vessel using a ramp between its prongs. Unfortunately, minifigures cannot actually access this ramp from inside, but I appreciate the function and the Inquisitors look great when stood beside the ramp. Also, the decorated trans-red cockpit appears striking against the otherwise dark exterior, integrating a windscreen from Speed Champions to recreate the desired shape.

The canopy opens on a hinge, revealing a seat and control panel inside. The interior is actually more extensive and accessible by opening multiple panels, but I appreciate the option to access the cockpit separately. Additionally, the continued appearance of dark bluish grey accents inside and outside is appealing.

My least favourite aspect of the onscreen transport are its wings, which seem disproportionately short to me. Nevertheless, this model is accurate and the wings align beautifully with the angled hull when lowered. I dislike the distribution of studs and tiles though, with studs dominating the front half and tiles the rear. Scattering a few more studs near the back would have been ideal.

The interior, by contrast, looks excellent. There are two additional seats and therefore space for all three Inquisitors, with stickered control consoles in the passenger area. These consoles also form stoppers when closing the external panels, although the decision to use stickers instead of building the consoles is disappointing.

Nine stickers are included in total, decorating the interior and back of the transport. I think these could have been avoided, although the distinctive Imperial light panels in the passenger section look good. Additionally, the seats are designed to accommodate the Inquisitors' shoulder armour and their lightsaber blades slot into jumper plates behind these seats.

Angular hull plating continues across the back, including a couple more stickers to create some mechanical detail. Again, I think they could have been avoided, but these few stickers are easy to apply and the resulting design matches the source material. The twin engines appear equally accurate, with adjustable flaps positioned between them.

Overall

As expected, 75336 Inquisitor Transport Scythe looks absolutely brilliant. Clever combinations of wedge plates and tiles recreate the Scythe's characteristic shape and the interior is impressively spacious, with more than enough room for the provided Inquisitors. The minifigures are splendid too, although also including Uncle Owen would have been even better.

Only four minifigures are definitely fewer than I would like in a set which costs £89.99, $99.99 or €99.99. Even so, that price represents relatively fair value within the Star Wars theme and I think the vehicle design is outstanding, rivalling any shuttle of comparable size. Among the Star Wars sets released this summer, 75336 Inquisitor Transport Scythe is my favourite.

Uncle Owen would've been a great addition! But this set is fantastic.

By in United States,

I feel this is the best Star Wars set of 2022.
For 100 dollars, you have a huge ship that's almost bigger than the Razor Crest, an nice spacious interior which is almost unheard of in a shuttle set, and it's just so nice and cleverly designed.
I love modding all my star wars sets, I love giving them that extra edge to make it nicer and more accurate. For the longest time I could not figure out what to do with this set, that is until I saw ideas on how people added in retractable landing gear!
And I agree, the only draw back I'd say for this set is that it it only has 4 minifigs. I feel this set could have gotten away with just one more figure, maybe Owen Lars or even that other background Inquisitor lady.

By in Poland,

I have zero knowledge about this Star Wars story, but the ship looks fantastic. I wonder if it would still look cool in different colours.

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

Fantastic looking ship and it was great in the story of Obi-Wan! Can't wait to have this set once it goes on sale for 20% off!

Man, Hans absolutely nailed the angles in the front section!

By in Singapore,

I'm only interested in the Third Sister minifigure so I can mod her into the Second Sister from Fallen Order. Not sure that it'd be a good idea to buy this set, even at a discount, just for her, although she's like 30 bucks or more on BrickLink depending on shipping costs. I mean, are the parts worth it if I'm not interested in the ship itself?

Great review!

When will we see the review of this year's AT-TE?

Gravatar
By in Portugal,

I bought it 2 weeks ago with a 33% discount. No brainer! I understand that we could have one more figure, but the selection is excellent. Also, its design for this scale is outstanding.

By in United Kingdom,

Thanks for the comprehensive review!

I love all the Star Warses, and the various storylines & characters, but most especially the spaceships and their (minifig-scale) translations into LEGO. However (unpopular opinion) but I'm not really fussed about the minifigures, so bought this without them on eBay (40 quid new seemed like a very fair price).

...and it is an excellent spaceship!

Thank you to the minifig collectors out there who allow me to buy cheap spaceships :-)

By in United States,

I wish one of the new Star Wars sets included a mini-figure of the young Princess Leia.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Grear review! I bought this at a 15% discount and well, well worth it. Great set! The only criticism is the landing gear spoiling the look in swoosh mode. I modified the landing gear to retract with around 8 small technic pieces. Surprised designer didn't do the same. Otherwise, this set is a masterpiece of design and figs. Great look, great interior (added a few more seats too). Get this set. Few are this good!

Positively shocked this costs $100 and not $120.

Haven’t watched the Obi-wan series so I don’t know these new characters or the ship, but it’s nice to see Star Wars sets can still have “wow” factor. The line has been stale for years IMO.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Not the worst set of the year but Kenobi was so mid, make a sub-$70 Andor set and I'll consider splurging on that.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

"Additionally, the continued appearance of dark bluish grey accents inside and outside is appalling."

Fixed that for you.

A model that is a black monolith should stay a black monolith. Maybe some accents inside but this mish-mash of non canonical shades in the corners of every single set that isn't explicitly a 850$ UCS is a plain detriment to the design that makes obvious that the item is made of Lego and a slave to the limitations of their limited palette of bricks currently in production.

Gravatar
By in United States,

In my head canon, this is a Blacktron vessel in hot pursuit of the Galaxy Explorer. Definitely gonna get it sometime soon.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Wow, it's Larry/Ben/Obi-Wan Kenobi, Reva, Pumpkin Head and Mushroom Boy!
From the spin-off from my favourite series, Larry, made by Auralnauts!
The ship is very nice too!

If you don't know what that is, I would recommend to give it a watch. Although I wouldn't start on Larry.

Wait, what is this Kenobi series you're talking about? That's not the series I'm looking for...
Larry was far more enjoyable anyway.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Honestly, I think this is a well-made set. The ship looks good, and isn't freakishly oversized or overpriced to boot! Take notes, Cad Bane.

I like how the set includes the three main inquisitors from the show along with a new variant of Obi-Wan as a bonus.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This set looks great! I thinks it’s shaped really well and the minifigs are not disappointing.

@bananaworld

I too am interested in minifigureless sets, do you have any advice on how/where to find them?

Whenever I've typed "no minifigures" or "set only" into search engines, they only seem to understand "minifigures" and "set".

By in Australia,

Nice review on a great ship. Thoroughly enjoyed the show and it's nice to see a faithful rendition in Lego. Although as mentioned above a young Leia would have been nice.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This one LEGO ship is likely the best thing to result from the dirt-fest that is the Kenobi series.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This is a fantastic set; was great to build, looks fantastic finished, remains very swooshable. Minifig selection doesn’t bother me, never been fussed about collecting the special ones, to the extent that I got mine second hand without them (and therefore for much cheaper!)

The onscreen vessel is not completely black, so I think introducing some dark bluish grey accents is effective. I suppose an even darker shade of grey would be better, but none is currently available.

eBay is your friend. Just search: LEGO (set number) on eBay and scroll until you find listings that mention "no minifigs" or "ship only" or similar. The newer the set, and the more desirable the minifigs (like this set), the better you'll do. Usually such listings are for new sets, but sometimes you'll get people selling sets they've built once which are basically good-as-new.

I'm sure it works the same in the States as in the UK!

By in United States,

I’m hoping they’ll eventually get around to releasing figures for the various other Inquisitors. They’re a lot more impressive than the Knights of Ren, and the whole numbering thing also makes it annoying to have an incomplete lineup. There are a number of ways in which additional Inquisitor figures could be introduced. The exact number of Inquisitors has yet to be confirmed, but I’ll go through those we know of.

The Second and Ninth Sisters have appeared most prominently in the game Jedi: Fallen Order. With the recent release of a set based on that game and the upcoming sequel Jedi Survivor in the works, additional sets featuring the two seem like possibilities. The Second Sister is encountered several times throughout the game, and could thus be worked into a number of sets along with her heroic adversary Cal Kestis. Personally, I think that it would please a number of fans were she to be included in a set featuring her TIE Interceptor, seeing as that ship hasn’t appeared full size in Lego form since 2006, unless you count 75240 Major Vonreg’s TIE Fighter of the Resistance theme.

As for the Ninth Sister, who is Bigfig material if ever a Star Wars character has been, she also has a few possibilities. My vote would be to include her in a set based on the TIE Reaper, her apparent preferred method of transport. This unusual TIE variant appeared briefly in Rogue One but has yet to appear in Lego form. It would thus not only give us the chance for a new vehicle, but a character who would be only the second physical female Bigfig after Ninjago’s Dogshank.

This set features three Inquisitors from Kenobi, but omits the character of the Fourth Sister. This less prominent member appears in fewer scenes and with less dialogue-if any?-than her compatriots. I’m not sure what the best way to include her might be, unless they make more sets based on season one of the series or include her in season two or some other project. One of the best possibilities is, of course, Fortress Inquisitorious, which has potential for including many of the missing Inquisitors.

Then there’s the Seventh Sister and Eighth Brother. Like the Grand Inquisitor and Fifth Brother, they debuted in Rebels, but were not fortunate enough to receive minifigures while that series had a running theme of sets. Barring Lego revisiting Rebels for some unused concepts, their best chance to get them would seem to be appearing in a future season of Kenobi, in Ahsoka flashbacks, or in some other project. I personally wouldn’t mind some more Rebels sets, but sadly I think the line lacks the popularity of the film trilogies or The Clone Wars that makes Lego confident in continuing to base sets on them.

There are other Inquisitors, but their appearances have mostly been in comics or books rather than on screen. Among these is the Sixth Brother, the only one missing from the single digit lineup-unless he’s the one recently featured in theTales of the Jedi series. There was also one in the Star Wars Visions episode “T0-B1”. These Inquisitors seem unlikely to get figures, unless they return in some other live-action or animated media.

Of course, almost any set that features Inquisitors could also come with Purge Troopers…

What a highly good set from a questionable show, they should have allowed for some Imperial Trooper to be included and swap Kenobi for the chum gets hunted by them.

Pearl dark grey is a darker shade of grey that they could have used if they wanted to make more subtle breaks, but that's impossible since the color is exclusive to 1x1 round plates and highly specialized pieces, nothing that could be reasonably incorporated into most models for accents.

Any grey spots are from a given shots lighting conditions and none of the grey parts on the model correspond to any of the traveling grey spots in the show. It's like with all AT-ATs before 2020, just less offensive. Many parts of all AT-AT sets were dark grey even though the studio model and onscreen model are near exclusively light grey.

Kryten: He erases all those who have wasted their lives and replaces them with those who never had a chance of life — the unfertilized eggs, the sperms that never made it. THAT is the Inquisitor — he prunes away the wastrels, expunges the wretched, and deletes the worthless!

RIMMER: We’re in big trouble.

You really think Lego or Lucasfilm would go for giving us a nameless one-off Jedi as opposed to the literal namesake of the series?

I was really impressed by this set. The building techniques were super fun to discover while putting the set together, and the minifigures were rad. I didn't even think about it needing more minifigures—but Owen would have been great!

Yes, ebay is best for sets w/o figs. Although, I've seen them more and more on Bricklink as well and they are usually cheaper than ebay. Just look up the set you want on Bricklink, and the cheapest ones are usually without figs. Often, you can also find sets spilt into sub-sets as well. For instance, if you just wanted to purchase additional passenger carriages for your Hogwarts Express.

This set is so solid and well-designed that I would be shocked if you didn't like it- especially if you like SW or Lego.

On the other hand, you could always sell the other figs and/or ship and probably make a small profit.

I like it, and if I get it I'll most likely build it at least once, but then I'd take it apart because I don't really collect SW outside of the video game sets (75226 75335) and it'd be odd to have just this ship and no other. But if they release a play-scale Mantis...

It is a boring ship with no meaning or cool screentime. The Inquisitors are not memorable as well. Even in Rebels they were more of a joke than a threat. But that is not Legos fault here.

I bought this set a few weeks ago on Amazon thanks to a good discount, and am now in the process of building it. I particularly appreciate all the brilliant techniques used to achieve the ship's weird angles, as well as its perfect symmetry. The only problem — though not due to the designer — is that it's black, which means it'll gather dust if I don't cover it…
