Review: 76911 007 Aston Martin DB5

Posted by ,

The revelation that Speed Champions would be expanding to include memorable cars from film and television was definitely well-received, since copious possibilities are available. However, few match the reputation of James Bond's exquisite Aston Martin DB5.

76911 007 Aston Martin DB5 therefore appears outstanding, accurately recreating the distinctive shaping of this renowned car. Various new elements are present to assure the utmost authenticity and the integration of metallic silver details also seems effective. Of course, the unique James Bond minifigure is equally exciting!

Summary

76911 007 Aston Martin DB5, 298 pieces.
£19.99 / $19.99 / €24.99 | 6.7p/6.7c/8.4c per piece.

The classic Aston Martin DB5 looks almost as impressive in LEGO as in reality!

  • Accurate bodywork shape
  • Remarkable attention to detail
  • Useful new elements
  • Great minifigure
  • Poor colour matching

The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.

Minifigure

Minifigures are rarely a highlight of Speed Champions sets, but this impressive James Bond design has already attracted anticipation. This minifigure takes inspiration from Daniel Craig's portrayal of the character, so features a suitable dark tan hair element, alongside a surly facial expression. Sean Connery's classic portrayal is clearly most associated with the Aston Martin DB5, but choosing the modern version is understandable.

Bond is impeccably dressed, as always. The black tuxedo jacket seemingly takes inspiration from No Time To Die, featuring the pocket square Bond wears when attending the SPECTRE party in Cuba. This dark bluish grey bow tie appears brighter than the film, but provides a nice contrast. Rather than his standard Walther PPK, James Bond carries a wrench, as normal for Speed Champions.

The Completed Model

James Bond has driven numerous extraordinary cars, but none have achieved the celebrated status of the Aston Martin DB5. This vehicle combines subtle and bulbous curves to incredible effect, although such curvature creates an inevitable challenge for LEGO. Nevertheless, I think the Speed Champions rendition looks fantastic, taking advantage of new and existing parts.

The least complimentary view is directly from the sides, where the absence of certain smooth curves become apparent. However, such inaccuracies are excusable at this scale, particularly because the LEGO element catalogue contains very few pieces with extremely gradual curves. The bulky structure underneath the car is also noticeable from the side, but hidden from usual viewing angles.

10262 James Bond Aston Martin DB5 was released during 2018 and definitely divided opinion. While the enormous Creator Expert design includes excellent functions, which are absent from the Speed Champions model, this 17cm-long version includes more realistic bodywork shaping and therefore appears superior for display!

The headlights seem particularly impressive, adorning a new 1x1 quarter dome element which lines up perfectly with the neighbouring curved slopes. I love the printed side lights too, while a new 1x2 inverted slope with cutout, equivalent to the existing 1x2 slope, secures both headlight assemblies. The recognisable radiator grille is also printed across two pieces.

Five pairs of number plates are included, representing the revolving number plates introduced during Goldfinger, alongside modern examples from Goldeneye and No Time To Die. They are each created using stickers on metallic silver 1x3 tiles, matching the pronounced metallic silver bumper, which is offset in relation to the bodywork.

Unique wheel caps have been designed for the Aston Martin DB5, recreating the tyre scythes and spoked texture present on the onscreen car. Their metallic silver finish looks splendid and the curvature of the bodywork behind the wheels matches the source material as well. Stickers represent the side vents and DB5 branding on each flank and differ in colour from surrounding parts, although subtly.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the rear windscreen, which displays a completely different shade of grey to the constructed bodywork. This instance is less egregious than that from 76908 Lamborghini Countach, but remains disappointing because such issues should be easily avoidable. However, the shape of the rear windscreen is absolutely perfect.

The front and rear windscreens can be detached to reach inside. Despite lacking the vibrant colours sometimes present on Speed Champions models, the black interior looks good and numerous important features are provided, including the tracking system, the door-mounted handbrake and the gearstick, although the ejector seat is missing. Also, the back seat cannot actually accommodate a minifigure sitting upright, but it looks superb.

Metallic silver also distinguishes the rear bumper, while pearl silver horns recreate the curved bumper guards. Two additional stickers form the Aston Martin and DB5 emblems, bringing the total number to eleven, excluding the alternative number plates. The contrasting rear lights are printed though, adorning new 1x2 rounded tiles, which match the common 1x2 rounded plates with hollow studs.

The twin exhausts are constructed using binoculars, attached to a clip and nozzle beneath the chassis. Speed Champions designs invariably feature ample detail, but such details continuing under the car is unusual! Furthermore, the spare nozzle could represent Bond's famous Walther PPK, if you wish.

Overall

Given the celebrated status of the Aston Martin DB5, 76911 007 Aston Martin DB5 demands particular accuracy. Thankfully, I think the model looks marvellous, faithfully recreating a very difficult bodywork shape. The selection of new elements is important to that success, although none are highly specialised, so I cannot criticise such reliance upon unique parts.

However, the awful colour matching between the printed rear windscreen and light bluish grey plastic undoubtedly warrants criticism, especially given the same issue has affected numerous sets. Even so, I am very pleased with the Aston Martin DB5. Hopefully the usual price of £17.99, $19.99 or €19.99 applies to this set, in which case this is definitely a worthy purchase.

Love all the Bond actors (even Lazenby has his moments), but Craig with this car?

Connery should've been the minifig included with this car, hands down. Or why not include 2? Connery and Craig.

Oh well, I can get another head and hair to match Connery.

By in United Kingdom,

It does look better than larger one from certain angles, but yeah the printing on rear screen, surely there must be a better way if can't match it!
I have larger one so doubt get this as space is at a premium!!

By in Sweden,

Bad colour matching for the prints, bad colour matching for the stickers and even bad colour matching for the pieces (just look at that wedge piece above the front grille, it's not even remotely close to the others).

Hard. Pass.

By in Netherlands,

I've read an article yesterday that they can now print a vegan steak. So we live in a world where they can print food, but nu get a color to match up on plastic, ouch.

Great set btw ;)

By in Australia,

Brilliant set! (Except for the aforementioned colour-matching issue on the rear screen - LEGO can create technical and artistic masterpieces with thousands of parts, and complicated instruction manuals, but can’t colour-match ….. it boggles the mind!).

Can’t wait to add this (& the Bond minifig) to my Creator Expert DB5! (one of the best and most complicated sets I’ve ever built!)

By in United States,

I love it, but this might be my first set to leave off the stickers.

By in United Kingdom,

Definitely a day one purchase, they've done a really impressive job with the shaping on this one! Just hope the colour on that rear windscreen doesn't look as bad in person.

Lego often seem quite keen to hear feedback from Brickset members - is there any way that the recent colour matching issues could be brought up with them? I don't ever remember it being as bad as it has been in the last couple of years - and for the first time it actually impacted my decision to not purchase a set (the Countach, where it's really painful!)

My guess it would be issues with getting the rights to each actor's likeness. Craig was the most recent bond, so it's likely the movie studios still have some sort of deal that makes it easier for him to appear in merchendise.

While the build of this set looks really good, there is no excuse for the colors to look so... bad. If they're going to increase the price across the board, then the least they can do is not decrease the quality. I was hoping that Mercy's head would've been a fluke, but I'm noticing these issues more and more in kits.

Not into Speed Champions, nor Bond, but this car would make a nice addition driving around my modular town.

€25 soon after the increase.

Also the lack of gadgets/connery might have something to do with the Goldfinger DB5 set Playmobil has.

Gravatar

The stickers also have a completely different shade of grey. Weird

Though I agree that there will always be a strong association between this car and Goldfinger/Connery, more recently Craig used the DB5 in 4 out of his 5 movies while Connery only used it twice. So between that and the likeness rights that PixelTheDragon mentioned, that's probably why Craig was chosen.

It's odd they didn't include stickers or printing for the B pillar (the window frame at the back edge of the doors). The side windows look strange and weirdly elongated without this feature. Some little grey vinyl rectangles should solve that!

I can't wait to buy it! But I think that Lego shouldn't allow reviews until the item is on its website. This will let me add the set to my wanted list even if it isn't available to sell. Otherwise I may forget about it.

About the color matching, I wonder why Lego couldn't do better. It's not like them for lack of trying to make everything accurate. Perhaps the ink is correct but the interference with the clear plastic make it look wonky?

1st of August.

Gravatar
By in Brazil,

Regarding the lack of Connery: it is 100% certainly due to licensing issues. Like when Eurocom made a remake of N64's Goldeneye 007 in 2010, they changed Pierce Brosnan for Craig and Sean Bean for other actor. It was to make things easier for them since, if they wanted Brosnan and Bean back for Bond and Trevelyan, they would need to pay an additional licensing for these actors.

Regarding the set, it looks amazing, much better than the large scale one. But with the very disappoiting fact of the poor color matching. Not to mention the imminent price increase in August that wasn't mentioned in the review...

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

It looks great, but I'm seriously getting sick of LEGO not getting their **** together with prints. Billions in net profit, but can't figure out how to make paint a bit more opaque, or in other cases, simply the right color. The stickers here are also a totally different color.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Surely someone looked at this in prototype and said why is it 3 / 4 shades of grey ? Unless of course they were told its only a prototype we'll fix the colours...…... Just realise it they'll buy it.

Gravatar

Gravatar

That is a very funny looking Sean Connery minifig... but the car looks great!
(yes, I know...)

Gravatar

Don't apply the stickers on this one, set becomes 50% better.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I, too, have thought from the start this model looks more accurate than the Expert Creator version. And, considering the price, I think I will definitely get this one.

@Zoniax said:

Agreed! Do you have any tips, incidentally, for a Connery-accurate head? =)

Gravatar
By in United States,

This one is too cool to pass on. The color matching is the only letdown with this. However, the good outweighs the bad IMO. I like that the car is fully enclosed with the front and back windscreens, and the backseat is a cool detail. I'll be swapping the head and hair for more Connery-esque features. I'm looking forward to what other memorable cars this theme has to offer.

Gravatar
By in United States,

First no buy speed champions for me. Bland boring and unnecessary IP. Unless they want to make it a full IP set and have more to the set. As is. Hard no.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It seems like releasing vehicles based on movies is a logical time for Lego to increase the price of this theme, unfortunately. But it makes sense. Everything is creeping up, both because of the economy and because Lego can charge it and people will pay.

Thanks for the review!

Accurate to the real life car then :D

Gravatar

I personally think it's a tad short.. 1 stud perhaps longer at the front. I like it, though not enough to buy it.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I think this set is not from James Bond, but from Fifty Shades of Grey ;-)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Although it has the various shades of gray and is missing a Connery minifig, this is a brilliant set. Love the shape and details. This is a must-buy for any Bond fan or a collector of the Speed Champions theme.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Me, "Do you expect me to ignore the poor color matching?"
Lego, "No, we expect you to buy."

Gravatar
By in United States,

Considering all of the Speed Champions are going up in price come September, I'm guessing the month of August this will be safe at that price until the next month, so I'm guessing it will be sold out immediately because of that.

The set itself looks decent enough. Obviously color matching is a consistent problem for LEGO, but why would they care? They are selling like hotcakes anyway, so why fix it if the fans don't care. They grumble and then still buy it.

As for price increase, I'm pretty sure they aren't going to increase the price AND fix issues because that would take away from their profits. Kinda the whole point for them to increase prices..(among other reasons with resource availability and whatnot.)

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I wasn't sold on this from the official pictures, but it does look a lot better in this review. Which makes it all the more sad of those coloring issues, which ruin everything. It didn't stop me from buying the Countach, but this is even worse. For the kind of money they expects us to pay, poor quality like this is just unacceptable. Lego, get your act together!

One thing I am kind of wondering though regarding that price, I once read the reason the Creator DB5 was so expensive and hasn't been discounted that much, was because of two unusually expensive licenses: AM and Bond. If that's true, it is a good thing this isn't more expensive than other SC sets.

Gravatar

It will be €25 soon with the August/September price "adjustments" , so maybe even at launch.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I recall the infamous Lego parable where Godfred told his dad that he had saved money on the shop's newest batch of wooden toys by only applying 2 coats of laquer instead of 3, and Ole Kirk was so horrified by the idea of cutting down on the quality (and cheating his customers) like so that he made Godfred unload all the ducks, apply that third coat, and then take them to be distributed.

Ole's probably looking down at the people making these Speed Champions windshields (amongst all the other weird printing mishap pieces) like "don't make me come down there you punks."

That's true, according to promobricks list, 2022 sets go up to €25 or €45 for the 2 pack, the 2021 sets so far are not listed.

But I get your point, that this isn't higher priced then other 2022 sets due to license.

Overall I think compromises had to be made, as Playmobil has a Goldfinger car currently with gadgets and a Sean connery.

Everyone who buys these sets should be sure to contact LEGO and express their disappointment with the color variations in bricks and the color matching of stickers and painted pieces. I've done this numerous times. Generally with minifigures. I don't ask for replacements. I just let them know that I'm not mad, just disappointed and a little saddened that they would allow their quality to drop. Perhaps if more people did this LEGO would feel guilt and really put the effort in to make excellent toys.

What's stopping you from telling them why you aren't buying it?

And let's be real: the people at Lego should be able to see these problems too. If a good product (at a reasonable price) doesn't sell, that's complicated. If a clearly flawed product at an inflated price doesn't sell, a company shouldn't need to be told the reason by their customers.

And it's not that they can't do better. The real problem is that they know they can and will get away with it, and as a result they just don't care.

Stickers stickers stickers.. Apparently LEGO loves stickers so much they included another one that is huge with poor color matching and not just a tiny one that would be the door handle... SAme with the little accent on the front fender.. C'Mon LEGO..... They'll make 300 new molds for accuracy of a Star Wars ship, but will not invest in some curved pieces to be used for headlight bezels (that would also likely get used in a lot of other sets)

Or offer proper premium quality transfer stickers like some alternative manufacturers. Those look almost like prints and the colour variations would be a non issue.
Or go the Cobi route of getting rid of stickers altogether. And while you're at it, TLG, ask Cobi how they manage to provide such superior print quality to your own (and production solely in the EU) for comparable prices.

Why has TLG moved away from clear-backed stickers? Wouldn't that completely resolve any color matching issues (aside from weak ink application on transparent parts, a whole other issue) if they insist on relying on stickers for such details?

Clear-Backed stickers still exist in 2022 sets, many of them in monkie kid for example, or even a few City sets.

I agree for cars like this , which are display models, clear backed probably the best option, somehow they did not.

The Countach has clear-backed stickers, so they are still around. They do have some issues that non-clear-backed stickers don't need to worry about. You can easily get dust caught under them. The tiniest air bubbles will show. The adhesive can catch dirt around the edges after a while. In short, regular folks might be less happy with the quality of the final result. But color matching is definitely less of an issue with clear-backs.

It must be frustrating for the Speed Champions team that the biggest flaws of their work is out of their hands. They keep producing excellent models but, rightly so, receive critique for things like color matching of plastic, stickers and prints. To me this set really showcases why LEGO need to up their quality control on the plastic, and the windscreen prints are starting to become a never ending story of disappointment. Sad. So close to perfect.

when will they finally shift to transparent stickers? that would solve the color mismatching problem.

By in Japan,

I know next to nothing about James Bond or his car, but his apparent popularity has driven (no pun intended) me to want to buy this set. It is affordable, and I am a casual fan of cars (and Disney's Cars) that look great on the exterior. The minifigure looks great and I can imagine the black-and-white suit being useful for custom spy figures. I see people in the comments here complaining about Bond's faceprint looking too "senior", but honestly I think it matches Daniel Craig/James Bond's likeness quite fittingly. I also love the presence of backseat space, even if it is only there for show.

However, I do agree with others here about the issue with LEGO's colour matching and varying shades of greys, among other colours. If LEGO really wants to cut costs, then why make so many different bleys... It won't be a deal-breaker for me as this looks to be a decent set (which will look great next to my other SC set - the Toyota Supra) but LEGO needs to fix their bley problem. And colour matching really sucks. Aside from the infamous Mercy's head problem, printing on transparent pieces is especially a problem. Applying more paint might help the issue.

I don't like the apparent quality reduction on LEGO's part, but that will no stop me from buying LEGO entirely. Rather, I'd just severely decrease my purchases, which I had already planned to do after LEGO announced their price increases.

well, mr bond, it appears your windscreen isn't as opaque as you claimed

By in Germany,

Sticker could have been transparent to avoid color mismatch, the windscreen should have been printed double layer and light bley should have the same color over all parts. 5€ price increase and TLG still can't fix the obvious quality complaints. Cutting corners and pissing off loyal fans will not help them maintain monopoly status for long.
Otherwise it's a nice SC car, if it wasn't for that unnecessary Daniel Craig minifigure. A nice yellow headed, neutral Bond would have sufficed.

"Why has TLG moved away from clear-backed stickers?"

But color matching is definitely less of an issue with clear-backs."

My biggest problem with clear stickers are my own fingerprints.... you only get one chance to stick or the unsticking changes the shade, but also would they be over shiny ? compared to pieces with no stickers.

Subtly!? Even on the pictures here you really can't oversee this. The stickers look aweful and right now keep me from insta-buying the set :-/

The stickers' colour difference is more obvious in the photos than in person, although still unacceptable.

He's apparently starring in a new James Bond film and is on location: "Dead Another Day". (After what happened to Craig's Bond, don't doubt they won't dig up Connery and CGI him into the next film. It's Hollywood, nothing is off-limits or impossible. You just need a whole lotta money to make it happen!)

The BTTF Delorean (maybe Part III western version w/ train wheels?) is also on my list.

I wonder if lego will ever again release a minifig scaled car instead of tanks

Gravatar
By in United States,

I would have made a minifigure of an earlier James Bond actor rather than Daniel Craig, but I am still definitely getting this set.

Maybe that's the problem with the colour mixing!

By in Netherlands,

I wonder why they created such large stickers for the sides, when there are only small details. Small stickers would have look so much better with the colour inconsistency. And maybe if they had tried to make the rear windscreen white or baby blue, the colour would have matched the light bluish grey perfectly.

Sticker and windshield printing still off colors but price is increasing? Seems like "only the best is good enough" is a load of crock now lmao.

Like others have said, I feel bad for the speed champions team creating such wonderful designs just to be let down by quality issues. Instead of just complaining in an echo chamber I will likely call Lego customer service about this set.
