By in United States,

So we're getting Lightyear this year... should we get a gritty version of Woody's Round-Up and then a third movie where a portal sends Buzz through to the Wild West and then have a fun crossover adventure through perhaps even time and space?

By in Australia,

So the girl's name is "Riff"?

I remember seeing this set and feeling quite betrayed that it was 65% 6765 Gold City Junction, which I do not own.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Rumor has it those extra long arms and legs on Woody are returning for the Na'vi this year. Fingers crossed!

Somebody’s poisoned the waterhole!

What does she riff, exactly? No guitar in this set.

Yeah, I think it would have looked better with 1x1 round bricks, rather than cones.

By in United States,

I really wanted to like the Toy Story sets, but I only ever picked up the big Zurg and Buzz sets. I just couldn’t bring myself to get this one.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Indeed.

By in Australia,

Really wanted this back in the day. It's almost the perfect Western set, which it pretty much is because this set wasn't entirely based on Toy Story 2. To an extent.

Gravatar
By in Brazil,

Unironically, I really wished that Lego kept using the longer minifigure legs and arms from Woody and Jessie. They had potential.

By in United States,

I need to get it running again, but I made a tender with a 9v motor so I could run the Western Train Chase around our layouts…and I figured out a way to mount Bullseye here to the side of the boxcar, so it looked like he was trying to catch up with Woody (who was operating the train).

@Zordboy:
Or, like how there’s SheHulk to go with the Hulk, maybe this is the home of the rare Tannen daughter.

@RaiderOfTheLostBrick:
What part of it does not appear in the B/W recording of the old Woody’s Roundup show that Jessie and Stinky Pete play for Woody in Toy Story 2?

By in Australia,

I have this set. Was a big fan of the Wild West as a kid, not as much into Toy Story. Sadly this set is now in random pieces, which is a shame as it would have made my Wild West display a lot better (I had to rely on Lone Ranger sets predominantly). I did manage to keep the safe in tact but that's about it.

I'd love to see a modern remake of this set! Personally I'd much prefer the new regular legs and minifig heads as that would make the sets so much more useful for my regular minifig layouts.

Ironic 'set-o'-the-day', as I've been hear rumors: the 'Woody' legs are coming back in the 'Avatar' set this year; this would allow the Na'vi to be taller than standard humans...and hopefully encourage TLG to add them back in for say: Ninjago, Monkey Kid, and other stuff...still think: Axel's (from Nexo Knight) body/'torso' plus these/those legs equals PURE WIN...

@GSR_MataNui : Awwww...ninjaed:)

Yes. As the building says, she Riff.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Why is Stinky Pete on the wanted poster? Yeah in Toy Story 2 it turns out he’s the bad guy, but this is clearly a scene from Woody’s Round-Up where he’s their friend. He finally reach criminal levels of stench?

"Howdy. The name's Pride, Woodrow Pride, or just plain Sherrif Woody if you're a wrong-un'.

Now o'course, that name's as phony as my own pride.

I was banished to this chunk of dirt that God forgot, after it all went wrong for me. I stared the abyss into the eye, and I blinked.

Used to go by 'McCree', but in my case, Pride came after the fall.

Welp, I'd best mosey along. Justice ain't gonna dispense itself - so, play nice."

I have (and love) all of the Toy Story sets, except for the polybags.Wasn't able to get all of the TS4 sets, though.
One thing I love about this set is the "Jail" sign. It's right over there, just look to the right a little bit! Although admittedly, the jail was designed to be detachable, so if you did so, the sign made more sense.

That's not ironic, that's just purely coincidental.

It’s ironic, in an Alanis Morrisette kind of a way.

That’s the problem, you picked up two of the more disappointing Toy Story sets.

One of the very, very, VERY rare examples of a line of Toy Story merchandise that actually features the Prospector in any way, shape or form! (Not the *only* one, but one of only two that I've ever known of.) I guess it makes sense; he was literally designed for the movie to be a toy that no-one wanted to buy, which is the crux of his whole character motivation; but I remember his absence was frustrating for a Toy-Story-2-obsessed kid who was looking to get at least one toy version of each of the characters!

As mentioned above, his wanted sign has always seemed like an odd inclusion to me when, in the in-universe show, he was just the bumbling comic relief without his toy character's malicious streak.

In any case, I remember at the time I kinda wanted this set for the minifigures; but I had no interest in the buildings themselves so I kinda stopped buying Toy Story sets after I got 7592, 7591 and 7590. In hindsight, though, it looks like a pretty fun set ^^

I'd watch the gritty Woody's Roundup. As for the Buzz meets Woody film, the similarly themed "Cowboys VS Aliens" didn't do too well...

I wish they would make a Jessie in a minidoll version.

By in Netherlands,

When this came out at the time I didn't like it. It looked too fake-ish. And yes, I know this is based on a literal TV set for a 50s esque western puppet show. But as a set there's just something off about the design.
With the benefit of hindsight I think it's a combination of the toyetic design, the minifigures looking off compared to regular ones and this being the first full western set since the 90s. Oh, and some of the colors combining weirdly. Now that we had Lone Ranger a few years after this came out, I must say...

It still doesn't look great. But it's understandable. But it's so incredibly basic.

Oh, and the play features. A plank that catapults a figure, the back of the jail pops off and the mine... you can drop parts down from the top. That's right, you can let gravity do its thing yourself! Not even a slider to drop it remotely!

Aside from the weird plank and basic jailbreak feature there are no other real features to the set. Compare that to the western theme from 1996 full of hidden loot, trapdoors, exploding jails, exploding coaches etc.

Pictures, Dave, please! I've been putting the TS sets back together, working on a tender for battery/Power Functions receiver.

@ThatBionicleGuy:
I misread that at first, thinking you were saying this was one of two instances in the LEGO theme, when that Wanted poster sticker is the only other instance I’ve ever heard of. For all toy lines combined, I was able to find two large plush toys, one beanie-style toy, a Tsum Tsum, at least four unarticulated figurines, an action figure with articulated elbows, an action figure with fixed elbows, and a wind-up walking toy. He probably appears in at least one coloring book. So, he’s not as rare as you might think, but he’s also not one of the core characters for the franchise. Of all the characters who only appear in one of the four movies, I think Zurg is the only one who really caught on, but he also appeared in the Star Command series.

@Modeltrainman:
It was just a 9v motor with a very plain black box, so it didn’t even match the engine. The only reason I made it was that none of the Toy Story train components was designed to accommodate a 9v motor. Can’t put it in the engine, because the wheels are permanent. Can’t put it on any of the rolling stock because they all have longer wheelbases. And I was just trying to get the train running as fast as possible, so I didn’t have time to really design something appropriate. After that, I kinda forgot about designing a matched tender.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The font chosen for the signs here really tilts me for some reason. They should have chosen something more Western. I am aware that it's Toy Story, but a mid-20th century puppet show would have not used that font.

@Murdoch17:
I’d kinda been thinking of going an entirely different direction. I had shelved the TS3 train for a few years because the Shellraiser is so much simpler to operate, but after stumbling across it I decided to try running it again. It ran terribly. It never ran that badly before, and I don’t know what changed.

Around that same time, another member of my LUG showed up with an old west train, but built in a chibi style (not his original design, but he’s since made a Santa Fe and at least one other train in the same style), where the engine is maybe half the length of mine. He sent me a copy of the LDraw file to play around with, and I’ve been thinking of trying to convert the TS3 train to that style.

The reason I’m thinking of doing this is I looked at the opening scene from TS3 to get an idea of what the tender actually looks like. Mine was just long enough to cover a 9v motor. Yours looks closer to the movie shape, which won’t accommodate a 9v motor at all, but it’s black with a small red logo in the film.

Anyway, when I have some free time, I may poke around in your design to see what you did with the front bogey. That’s probably one of two major issues I’d have with getting the existing version running again (the other is scrubbing out the caked on ABS dust, and maybe swapping out some pins and axles where moving parts have caused wear and tear).

@CopperTablet:
You’re right to the extent that the TV series logo is concerned. That used rope to write Woody’s name, and “Roundup” was written in a clean block letter font. The set for the TV series is another matter:

https://yesterland.com/roundup.html

This shows pics taken of the live stage show at Disneyland, which opened the same month as Toy Story 2 released in theaters. The signage outside the stage matches the logo for the fictional TV series, but if you scroll down to the shot where a guy on house left is holding up an “applause” sign, you can see the Sheriff sign a bit to the right. While it’s not an exact match to this set, the stickers are clearly intended to match that look. In the film, the backdrops on the set have very similar styling. This does actually make sense, as set design/construction and marketing would be two completely different departments who may have wildly different ideas that they’re working on at the same time. Another great example of that is Batman Begins, where the movie was marketed with that iconic flat-top bat logo that matches the batarang he cuts on a bench grinder. The batsuit, however, uses a logo more like Jim Lee’s Batman from the Hush storyline, which also appears to be the basis for the Arkham video game logos. For The Dark Knight, they introduced upgrades to the batsuit that also involved switching the logo to match the movie logo, which carried through the third film as well. And that’s not even the first time Batman has gone through that! Keaton’s 1989 costume had a triple-tail logo, while the film just used the standard silver age logo. For Batman Returns, the costume had the same Silver Age logo.

It all just depends on story and execution because the concept itself is not that bad.

Firefly didn’t do well either, or The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. I keep telling my dad that the western genre isn’t really that popular anymore. Not like when he was growing up, at least. But I did enjoy Cowboys vs James Bond vs Indians vs Indiana Jones vs Aliens. I even own a copy. I think that when you genre-bend like that, you risk losing large elements of both fandoms for not delivering something more traditional, and not having anyone to replace them with. Throw in a huge SFX budget, and it’s definitely risky.

CvA started out the same as Men in Black. Both were indie comics that got the attention of someone in Hollywood. But where CvA is “tech west”, MiB is just sci-fi with a comic spin. That said, if Pixar produces it, people will watch it. They’ve got one of the best track records in all of Hollywood when it comes to making hit movies. If someone comes up with a compelling pitch, I could see them releasing this film, though probably in a much less gritty style. I expect Lightyear to feel less targeted at young kids than the first Toy Story film, but not to feel similar to the Aliens films.
