By in Australia,

With my ability, I'd still find a way to miss those targets.

So... where's the ball?

There were still Sports sets in 2006??? Wow, that theme definitely fell hard off my radar. The year 2006, though, was an overall lull other than in the world of BIONICLE, as far as my collection goes.

I am a big LEGO sports fan as I collected some of the sets in the summer, But I am not a fan of the 2006 sports sets. They are very terrible when compared to some of the earlier sets. And also all the figures in the 2006 sets have stickered torso's which we all hate.

@MCLegoboy:
No, you see, they’re practicing flopping directly in a ref’s line of sight to draw a foul. No balls needed.

By in Canada,

I thought I had this set on account of the large clear piece which doubled as a storage carry case (kind of like the Friends cubes or VIDIYO beatboxes of recent times), but it turned out to be the 3401 which is more or less the same set except with ZIDANE!

… and that one had balls.

In more ways than one. ;)

This was the last year for that theme and Clikits as well.

Sports wasn't great even with the playable feature, but 2006 had some decent sets.
First large star destroyer, the last (and best) wave of KK and city had some gems like 7905

By in United Kingdom,

So, I had the older version of this set, 3401-2, which looks to have been to all intents and purposes identical except for the minifigures, the colours, and the fact that everything in that set was printed, as opposed to the torsos and score numbers being stickers in this version.

According to the Bricklink inventories, this version of the set had two more pieces than the one I had: the base of the scoring frame, in this set, is two 4x4 plates where the older set was a single 4x8... and the sticker sheet.

Personally, I didn't find it a very worthwhile set in the end, for a combination of a) not being interested in sports in general or football in particular, b) needing two people to play it properly and c) the big plastic goal / carrying case making up most of the set's contents. I respect what the Sports line was trying to do, but just never felt like this set hit the mark.

Then again, I guess it's also fairly obvious that recluse children who didn't like sports, like me, were never really the target audience here... xD

@Lego_Lord_Mayorca:
2006 was the first year for Batman sets. While it would take another two years to get a Harley Quinn minifig, that still made it a pretty spectacular year in my book.

By in Netherlands,

Just by calling it *soccer*, they obviously missed the mark....

By in Ireland,

Did you have to score to get the 5 or 10 points? For example you could put it through the 10 point square and over the bar or have it saved.

Take it up with the UK. They came up with the term.

By in Netherlands,

Well, Lego ain't from the UK, and even those stubborn British came back from their foolish mistake of giving the sport some nonsensical nickname ;-)

All jokes aside, I was wondering how much localization Lego would use in the set names. But found a quick answer: the entry of 3568 includes a link to a 2006 UK catalogue, and indeed, there it's named "Football Target Practice".

Last time I checked, you’re not supposed to kick the goalie into the goal.

I do feel that Scott Sterling would deserve his own Lego set. The Man! The Myth! The Legend!

Though one single head with an alternate face wouldn't cut it...

People might actually watch that, though."

Haha yeah. With proper padding and many liability waivers, that sport could be quite amusing.
