Someday, I want to find out why they were forced to recall any Spongebob product that was in the pipeline when they lost the license.

By in Canada,

I think they should have replaced Plankton with a Blacktron.

Wow, that's ... horrifying.

$30? This would totally be ~$100 today

I’ve never seen this set in my life.

By in United States,

This is... certainly a thing.

At least it's cheap. A 2021 version would have 1,500 pieces and cost $130. And also be, inexplicably, given 18+ branding and a black box that would make SpongeBob look like he was jettisoned out an airlock in deep space.

...You make that sound like that would be a 'bad' thing...:D

Seriously, I...washed out (ironic term) of Spongebob, well before the Lego sets...somewhere 'round the third-or-fourth season; and by that time: I liked every character in show...EXCEPT SPONGEBOB...weird, huh...

SpongeBob Trapezoid head and his Knights Kingdom figure hands.
Couldn't have made those bigger and articulated at the price point, huh guys?

It's pretty common in license contracts to include a clause to recall all unsold products if the contract is not renewed. It prevents the previous licensee to compete with the new licensee.

Jedi Bob, is that you?

LEGO Spongebob is just a line that makes me happy. I got my favorite cartoons combined with my favorite hobby. Sure, it didn't last long and there's a lot they didn't get to do, but I think that oddly makes it mean more to me. Despite all the licenses, Nickelodeon hasn't been touched. Nickelodeon was pretty much the channel I watched as a kid.

By in Finland,

Ooh I remember this set. Interesting that Plankton is considered a minifig here - I wouldn't have put him down as one...

ah yes, my sleep paralysis demon

Ah yes I remember finding this at a flea market in like new condition only missing one piece for $15. My biggest lego regret is throwing away the box for this but I’ve still got the set in amazing shape

By in Finland,

Got this for my birthday in 2010. Since I was a big SpongeBob fan, it was my prized possession for years (and it still is!). In general, SpongeBob merch can be quite expensive, but I saw this as a great way to get a big ol' SpongeBob statue for my collection.

I still think that this and the original Krusty Krab are the best SpongeBob sets that LEGO has made.

Similar here.
I never knew about the show, as it was decades after my childhood, but once I bought parts on Bricklink and the seller had this set in as new condition (but without box) for 15 Euro. I looked at the parts list and thought "what the heck", it's a bargain parts pack. And it was. Some really interesting printed pieces too.
To this day I haven't built the set as I don't care the least about the source material, but the parts (which were indeed mint) have found good use elsewhere.

By in France,

Reading some comments on here, I was under the impression that the license had barely lasted for a few sets... But the database shows they had like 5 years worth of sets, even if not that many per year. That's a long time to hold a license overall! They probably didn't sell well enough to warrant renewing it, or there might be another toy company out there that picked up where Lego left off...

I'm not sure which Plankton is better, this one or the Davy Jones heart-sized one.

SpongeBob was an impostor.

This is not the Bob you're looking for. He can go about his buisness. Move along.

@kyrodes:
It’s pretty common that anything that is ready for sale can be sold off once the contract concludes. Spongebob is the _only_ exception to this that I’m aware of. TMNT keychains were available at the local LEGOLAND Discovery Center for a few years after that license ended, and with TLC owning a stake in the parks, that should have been subject to any recall.

Just call him Bob

By in United Kingdom,

I love the socks and shoes more than the Adidas ones. Surprised 6 brick wide, rather than just a 2 wide brick wall. I've never seen before but appears you could open his mouth and 'spit' out clear gobbles of 4292835: MINI BAKERS HAT which looks like fun but surprised the censors let it pass. Does anyone know if the included gearing allowed the eyes to turn when you twist from the inside, although from the instructions it looks like you could easier adapt to do this?

I have the Build-a-Buzz but didn't realize there was a Build-a-Bob. I think I much prefer the former

By in United Kingdom,

Oh how nifty to this set today =)

I actually found this set the other year in what I assumed was someone’s house clear out, while out on a walk. The box was majorly banged up but it was STILL SEALED, and the owner kindly let us take it for free. Still have it, but plan to sell it soon (perhaps watch out on EBay or Bricklink soon) ;)

Yeah, this build for Bob the Sponge definitely looks pretty weird and doesn’t really hold up well today. The recent Minion brick-builds do one better by... ALOT. But I like the inclusion of the acceptably good Plankton build, plus the fact the set is referencing his debut episode.

Yep. My word on it. What a cool find in that April of 2020 =3 BD

By in United States,

You'd think I'd remember something like this, once prompted, but... nope, not ringing any bells. This was an early entry in the "large, objectively kind of awesome set I have zero interest in" category--something that didn't exist in my childhood, when even themes I didn't actively seek would still have been awesome to have (like Technic or Trains). As an adult, it's become wildly more common.

I suppose that's growing up, but it'd be much more fun to gripe on the Internet about how LEGO's been ruined.

@quiddete:
7592, Construct-a-Buzz (Bob is the only “Build-a-“ set that’s not Duplo), of which I think I have one built, one modified into a giant mech for minifig Buzz, and five open copies.

@Murdoch17:
7591 (yes, somehow he got the lower number), Construct-a-Zurg (Walmart exclusive?), of which I have one built, two sealed, and ten open copies that I know of.

Yeah, I went a little overboard on those guys. It didn’t help that each one came with a bonus Claw Alien. Plus some of the first dark-purple parts since the original Knight Bus put the color on hiatus.

By in United States,

This thing haunted my catalogs when I was younger. I've always hated Spongebob. Nice use of the Knights' Kingdom II arms though.
