Review: 75312 Boba Fett's Starship

Numerous depictions of Boba Fett's impressive vehicle have been produced since 2000, varying dramatically in scale and appearance. Each new rendition has provided unique features and the latest model, 75312 Boba Fett's Starship, offers continued innovation!

This appealing vehicle is noticeably smaller and accordingly less expensive than modern equivalents, matching examples like 75300 Imperial TIE Fighter from that perspective. Nevertheless, tremendous detail and functionality remains present, alongside an impressive Boba Fett minifigure which is based upon The Mandalorian.

Minifigures

Following his exciting reappearance during The Mandalorian, an updated Boba Fett minifigure has become extremely desirable and this design looks marvellous. Upon reacquiring his famed armour, Fett repairs damage and that is reflected here as metallic silver scratches are removed, when comparing this minifigure with its detailed predecessor.

This character also features a darker garment beneath his armour, further deviating from the previous minifigure. The inclusion of fabric overlapping this armour is certainly effective and I appreciate the retention of certain distinctive features, including the metallic silver emblem on Boba's chest. Ideally, the helmet and chest armour would exhibit consistent colours, although this arrangement matches past designs.

Outstanding detail adorns both arms as well, ensuring further accuracy to the source material. Din Djarin also includes printed arms and this minifigure is accordingly identical to the variant from 75299 Trouble on Tatooine, produced during January. The intricate Mudhorn signet looks particularly appealing and I love the whistling bird launcher mounted on Djarin's wrist.

Metallic silver is the perfect colour for the Mandalorian's beskar armour, with metallic accents decorating the pouches and straps across his torso too. Unfortunately, the pearl silver helmet appears awkward beside the metallic silver printing. Additionally, I was rather disappointed by the absence of an exclusive head under this helmet, since the character's face has now been revealed. Boba's scarred head looks magnificent though.

Boba Fett includes a sand green jetpack while Din Djarin sports a dark bluish grey cape. This matches the onscreen Mandalorians, although the cape prevents Djarin from wearing his own jetpack, which is omitted. However, fitting weapons are supplied with each character, including the treasured beskar spear and Boba's distinctive blaster rifle.

The Completed Model

75222 Betrayal at Cloud City contained an interesting model of the Slave I, maintaining detail from previous designs while reducing the size. That creation attracted deserved attention and 75312 Boba Fett's Starship definitely takes inspiration from the prior model, although both the scale and detail have increased somewhat. The resulting vessel seems impressive.

Comparing this rendition with 75243 Slave I - 20th Anniversary Edition and the example from 75222 Betrayal at Cloud City reveals their similarities. The new design combines attributes of those previous models, measuring 20cm in length which is dramatically smaller than the 2019 set. However, the detailing has remained intact, differing from other recent models of reduced scale that prize reasonable size over intricate detail.

LEGO has produced various Slave I models and replicating the rounded engine cowling has frequently proven difficult. This creation combines several wedge slopes to reasonable effect and makes good use of 3x3 wedge bricks which also appeared on the previous model. Some battle wear is present too, corresponding with the onscreen craft.

The boarding ramp cannot actually accommodate minifigures. However, an accurate storage space is positioned underneath the ramp and may be accessed easily, revealing an excellent carbonite block inside. The block is significantly smaller than the unique element produced for Han Solo in Carbonite, which has accompanied several previous renditions of the Slave I.

Nevertheless, this 1x2x5 brick looks superb and complements 75292 The Razor Crest, which contains two similar carbonite blocks. This example imprisons an imposing Gamorrean Guard and appears immediately recognisable, matching the appropriate minifigure. Ideally, this piece would have been printed, although I think the sticker represents an excellent alternative.

The substantial boom which extends beneath the cockpit is accurately angled here, matching other recent models of the Slave I. Moreover, this combination of light bluish grey, sand green and dark green elements appears fantastic when compared with the source material, faithfully replicating the mismatched bodywork colours that appear onscreen.

Stickers are used sparingly but successfully and this structure feels absolutely rigid. However, the laser cannons are relatively fragile which is unfortunate, although I appreciate their superb articulation. No weapons are concealed within the fuselage, but two stud shooters are situated beneath the cockpit, where an ion cannon and concussion missile launcher are located on the original vehicle.

Dark green stabiliser shrouds protect the wing supports and their curved shape looks perfect, incorporating 3x3 arch bricks which have never appeared in this colour before. The bodywork beside these shrouds seems effective too, recreating the rounded cockpit structure. I think the trans-black canopy element works neatly at this scale, although narrow gaps are present near the aforementioned stud shooters.

The cockpit is spacious, comfortably accommodating one minifigure in either flight or landing configuration. The interior accordingly includes a decorated control console and there is even enough space for Boba Fett's jetpack, which was a pleasant surprise. However, the seat does not rotate with the wings, unlike past LEGO representations of the Slave I.

Instead, the minifigure can be placed on vacant studs and seated for flight. This arrangement appears awkward because Boba's legs are particularly close to the canopy. Of course, certain compromises are unavoidable when constructing models at this scale and I am impressed that the minifigure can be seated in two different positions, reflecting the source material.

LEGO occasionally provides boarding ladders or storage carts which accompany larger craft. They are sometimes welcome for play but most examples are superfluous in my opinion. The boarding vehicle supplied here should definitely occupy that category, especially because this famous transport is accessed using a conventional boarding ramp.

However, the primary reason for this inclusion is actually to support the Slave I on display, as demonstrated below! The option to position this model in flight configuration is welcome and I like how the display stand doubles for play, although a dedicated display stand could probably have appeared more attractive and achieved better stability.

The current structure does work, although there are no secure connection points between the display stand and this vessel. The engine housing instead slots onto the base while the ladder nestles beneath a sand green 2x2 inverted tile. I think the designer could have employed a clip to fasten the ladder here, thereby improving this connection between the stand and the vehicle.

As normal, the wings rotate automatically as the Slave I transitions between landing and flight configurations. This mechanism is simple but ensures absolute accuracy, without affecting the appearance of each wing. In fact, the detailing is brilliant, featuring dark orange accents inside the stabiliser shrouds and adjustable flaps. The tan highlights appear authentic as well.

Viewing this model from behind reveals continued detail, including engine nacelles which are correctly positioned. Furthermore, intricate mechanical detail is present, particularly below the access ramp where 2x2 rocker elements create interesting texture. However, the upper engine band is noticeably interrupted by Technic pieces.

They comprise an excellent carrying handle, matching 75243 Slave I - 20th Anniversary Edition which incorporated a similar feature. The handle is rather small but functions perfectly, even for larger adult hands. Moreover, I am pleased by how smoothly this handle folds into the fuselage, despite obstructing an accurate engine band across the reverse.

Overall

75312 Boba Fett's Starship achieves an unusual balance between scale and detail, capturing numerous important features of the onscreen vessel while concurrently reducing the size. The resultant model has certainly surpassed my expectations, although I am surprised by the focus upon details above size, since 75300 Imperial TIE Fighter and 75301 Luke Skywalker's X-wing Fighter inverted those priorities.

Nevertheless, this vehicle is appealing and the minifigures are similarly impressive. Boba Fett will doubtless attract notable attention and I am pleased that both Mandalorian bounty hunters include decorated arms. The price of £44.99 or $49.99 does feel expensive based wholly upon the scale of this Slave I, although I think its quality and those minifigures justify the cost.

This set was provided for review by The LEGO Group but the review represents an expression of my own opinions.

Don't need it cause I have the UCS version, but it is a nice, small model. And that new Boba face print is really good (but still no Mando face)!

By in Australia,

Why "Boba Fett's Starship", when all the previous models were named Slave I?

Gravatar
By in United States,

When the show expands the interior (particular the cockpit area) I simply don’t understand this set release. Other than trying to:

1. Cash in on Mando's popularity.
2. Provide an entry-level Slave 1.

BUT…some ships and places shouldn’t have ‘entry-level’ designs. Slave 1 is…one.

EDIT:
Take this and imagine doing a similarly shrunken Falcon. I’d be shaking my head at that as well. Unnecessary to be added to the theme.

By in United States,

I'll definitely try and pick up the Boba fig as well as the Gamorrean in carbonite, but I already have the 20th Anniversary edition of the Slave I so I don't feel a need to have the whole set. It does look nice though!

Gravatar
By in Portugal,

Still no Mando face? agh they even made one for boba...
I do Like the design of the ship and the figures look good, but the price is as said here, pretty big considering the fact that it only has two figures, this could easily be a 30/35€, and I might be okay with 40 tops, but this is a nono, especially because I bet we will see that Boba figure again thanks to the new series he's about to get.

SLAVE

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm renewing my call for a Microfighter Slave-1 (one that wasn't a hard-to-find convention exclusive). I'll take it with a dad-bod Fett since OT-era Fett is pretty common at this point.

Kudos if they make an identical AOTC Slave-1 in Microfighter style.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Disney, it's SLAVE I. Apparently any word is offensive. In this case it's just the name of the ship. It has never been a problem before.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I like the stand, and love the size. However big it should be, as a one man ship I just never saw the need for it to be as big as it's been getting. The slave 1 in cloud city looked great, but I wasn't going to buy the whole thing for that.

So this is perfect for me. A good redition of an iconic ship at an adequate but not excessive size

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Not to moan, but for that price they could've included Fennec.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Since I don't have a Slave I yet, and the older ones have... problematic prices for their piece counts, I'm definitely getting this one. Boba looks great and the ship itself looks fantastic for its size. I'll have to bricklink the old Han in carbonite for this, I think...

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is a day one purchase for me. I’ve always wanted a Slave-1 set, but they’ve always been out if my price range. This is absolutely fantastic. Also, LEGO went all out on that Boba fig. Oh, and did I mention? I LOVE THIS SET!!!

Actually, I still sometimes kick myself for not getting the midi-scale Falcon. I wonder how this would scale to that.

15 years ago a LEGO Slave I, 6209-1, with comparable price and number of pieces was twice as big and had more minifigures and play features. Now, it doesn't look anywhere as good as this and it's probably not very sturdy, but still: not a great comparison.

We might now know why we haven't gotten a more commercially able Slave 1 micro figther, Disney had issues with the name.

Having just picked up 75300 & 75301, I think this will go nicely with them. Don't have the previous incarnations, so I'll be very happy with a mid-size, mid-price version.

Wow, I so much disagree with everything you've said. Of course LEGO is releasing this set on par with The Book of Boba Fett. Of course they wanted keep it as entry level, after literally all of us complaining Star Wars models are getting more and more expensive. Every model should have an entry level equivalent, microfighter series being the most notable example. And yes - I'd love to see a smaller Falcon.

No, that old one's pretty sturdy, still! ^^ It doesn't have a carrying handle like the newer versions do, but it's got enough interior construction that it can be picked up by the 'nose' quite easily without giving way at all. In fact, it's so sturdy that it was actually a pain in the rear to dismantle when I was taking my Lego collection to pieces a few months ago, in preparation for eventually moving out!

For myself, I still love my old 6209, so I have no personal interest in this set. Still, looks nice for those who haven't been able to get a Slave I before... so even if I'm too biased and nostalgic to be personally interested, I can see the appeal ^^

We’re long overdue for a Jango version of this ship. I would even love a CW version with Hondo and his crew. But a Jango one would be amazing. Maybe release it along side a Obi Wan Jedi star fighter.

If I were LEGO I would put Jango's Slave I and Obi-Wan's Jedi Starfighter in the same set. At this scale it would be like $60, $70 tops, with just the three important minifigures + an astromech; a shrunk down Jedi Starfighter probably wouldn't be a set on its own as they just don't do "normal" sets under $20 anymore.

Gotta buy this! Thanks for the review.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think the X-Wing, TIE fighter and now this set show that Lego can accomplish a lot with the current variety of molds, good color choices, and thoughtful design. Those factors allow them to accomplish decent proportions and design value, which has come from enlarging sets in the past. I really like this trend.

By in Philippines,

I don't get all the hate. I've seen people dislike the build itself (the name of the set is another story). I mean the Slave 1 is designed by LEGO to be piloted by Boba only with cargo space and some weapons. Making this smaller while retaining all but one of the features of the 2019 model is absolutely amazing especially when it doubles as both a play and display model. And the price! $50 for 593 pieces? that's almost unheard of! Bottom line is, if you wanna dislike this model due to the build, go ahead and fight me. I love what they did and they surpassed my expectation of downscaling a set. It looks like the Slave 1 anyway

Gravatar
By in United States,

So this was the one set I was going to skip in this recent wave. But now seeing the the Boba and how it integrates (and adds to) the carbonite figures from the Razor Crest, I’m having second thoughts. I don’t have Cloud City, but I did part out the Slave I from that set as I liked the smaller scale (and price), so I thought this was just a remake of that, but it clearly isn’t. This one definitely relates to the Mandalorian and Book of Boba Fett, while the other one was designed for carrying Han. It’s a shame the set contains Mando and not Shand, but I’ll be getting her in the light cruiser so I can live with that. Also the price is great, although I would’ve preferred they dropped the stand to save us $5.

My guess is LEGO doesn't want people Googling 'LEGO' and "Slave' in the same search."

That wasn’t an issue for previous Slave 1 sets… or the LEGO Indiana Jones game’s “Slave Child.” In any case, this looks like a cool set, obviously they could make it more accurate at a larger scale but I’m satisfied with a smaller model if it means I’ll actually be able to buy it. I feel like they could’ve dropped the ladder build and expanded on the ship a little more but it’s great as is, in my opinion.

Really pleased to see TLG making smaller more manageable sets... When my boys where growing up they had lots of Star Wars sets, many of them were big and bulky making them awkward to 'swoosh' and manoeuvre. These are a lovely playable size.

Interesting seeing all of the posts wanting to cancel Lego or Disney for not using the world ‘slave.’

I personally don’t have a fetish for that word, but there are surely other websites out there that cater to people with similar fetishes.

I already have the UCS but these figures make it an easy decision. My only [very minor] complaint is I'd like to have a more traditional style stand for it but that's easy enough to fix. I continue to love how they're making the high profile ships available with a decent amount of detail at a reasonable price point.

Damnit, why not just make a small starfighter to buy separately. Plenty of kids can't afford anything above £20, it's criminal that all these smaller vehicles are packaged together at a prohibitive price.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It looks way smaller than jango's slave I yet it has over 200 pieces more. This happens to many new sets recently, looks small but tons of pieces. I guess the price is ok then, not something I would say for 90% of lego sets. Although a sub $30 entry level slave I set would be nice.

Seriously, does anyone believe racism will end because we ban some terms some people find offensive? I'm against any kind of discrimination, but what is happening right now is just ridiculous. I just read that re-editions of old Disney comic books popular in my youth will have totally new dialogue/text because some of the old version contained terms now deemed politically incorrect. Even if this means distorting the contents, sometimes to the point of not making sense anymore.

Maybe they had to change it because every time they hear it it reminds them of their labor practices. "Interesting seeing all of the posts wanting to cancel Lego or Disney for not using the world ‘slave.’

I personally don’t have a fetish for that word, but there are surely other websites out there that cater to people with similar fetishes.

Maybe the people posting here not about Lego building, not about Star Wars, but instead in defense of one of their favorite fetish words would be better served on one of those websites. "

You seem to have a fetish for the word "fetish"."

Struck a nerve, huh?"

Is it a ... Boba Fettish? :P

By in Netherlands,

Seeing that Disney wants to cancel the word "Slave" just makes me sigh.

It feels that the general overly political correctness and caution should should make the free world we live in a beautiful place for all, that are able to afford new Lego sets, so that we can all forget about the unjustice and poverty in most of the same world we actually live in.

By in United Kingdom,

Turns out some people really like the word "slave", huh.

Who'd have thought the real victims here were people who wanted to see it on a toy box?

"Disney, it's SLAVE I. Apparently any word is offensive. In this case it's just the name of the ship. It has never been a problem before."

Has anyone considered the ship's name change may have less to do with "political correctness" (if you believe it exists) and more with something we'll see in the Book of Boba Fett? Maybe Boba himself no longer calls the ship by that name.

No Carbonite Han Solo?

Wouldn't surprise me if LEGO will make another Carbon Freezing Chamber next .

Psst...there have been calls for that since the early 2000s.

By in Australia,

I’m going with canonical. Boba was out of action for a while, his starship registration expired and he lost his personalised ’SLAVE 1’ plates.

There’s probably a Naboo freight liner being piloted by Sebulba’s uncle with SLAVE 1 rego right now.

What a cursed attempt at a rename for such an iconic vessel.

"Seriously, does anyone believe racism will end because we ban some terms some people find offensive? I'm against any kind of discrimination, but what is happening right now is just ridiculous. I just read that re-editions of old Disney comic books popular in my youth will have totally new dialogue/text because some of the old version contained terms now deemed politically incorrect. Even if this means distorting the contents, sometimes to the point of not making sense anymore.
What a strange world we are living in...
"

I Agree.

Racism or something like that... even more double standards done by Disney.

By in United States,

That's funny they made the cart double as a stand. I own the original slave 1 7144 set and I would clip the little cart that came with the original naboo fighter 7141 onto the back of the ship so I could display it vertically as well! I think it's actually still clipped on inside the display case I have it in
