Palpatine should have stayed yellow when all the other characters switched to flesh.

My first Darth Vader minifig.

He's actually tan now, which is better than the light bluish gray they used when everyone switched to flesh. It gives a nice, slightly eerie quality that matches the prosthetics of 1983.

Am I the only one who misses chrome lightsabers?

I like how this box art depicts Palpatine as having a window in front of another window.

That's a dose of nostalgia - I won this set in a university trivia contest, back when I was in my dark age (I started collecting again in 2007). Still got it, now paired with throwback minifigs (that reproduction yellow Luke from one of the books, the yellow Leia from the anniversary Slave I, that sort of thing) right in the middle of the now-massive Lego Star Wars shelf.

"Hey boss, I hope somebody buys the other half of the set. This is boring."

Final Duel I and Final Duel II combined have only 44 pieces. I guess someone at LEGO thought that kind of piece count was too much and needed to be split over two sets ... it didn’t.

It was the Twilight Breaking Dawn of LEGO sets, did not need to be split into two parts and the resources that went into making them could have been used to make something far better.

I got this around Christmastime in 2001. My LEGO budget having mostly been blown on the large BIONICLE Rahi sets that year, I was delighted to find a whole bunch of affordable Star Wars options in the form of Final Duel I and II, as well as Jedi Defense I and II. With this set, I scored my first Emperor Palpatine minifigure and I'm fairly certain this was also my first Darth Vader minifigure as well!

I remember combining the pieces in this set with those in Final Duel II in order to make a longer platform stretching from the Emperor's throne to give space for Luke and Vader to duel. And being so simple in design, it was quick and easy to get them reassembled in their original forms. Yes, for thirteen year-old me, this was the beginning of a LEGO Star Wars golden age, one in which I got some of my favorite sets, sets that I still rank highly to this day.

Imagine being able to get Vader AND Ole Palpy this cheaply and easily today.

I miss them.

By in United States,

Oh wow. I have this one! Miss the chrome lightsaber, too. I agree that’s an easy and cheap way to get both the Emperor and Vader. I also have Final Duel II, which I like more actually.

Gravatar

Great way to get Vader and the Emperor for cheap.

Finally more Star Wars RSOTD! :) First the Tri Fighter, then Obi Wan’s Starfighter, then Assassin Droids now this! THX HUWBOT!

By in Hungary,

It is funny having a _final_ duel I, implying that there is a II, which means this one is not the final one.

Gravatar
By in United States,

If this set were released now it would be 700 pieces and cost $75.

Gravatar
By in Turkey,

Easy way of getting both Emperor and Vader in one set. I wish I have waited, I got 7150 and 7166 instead in 1999 and 2001.

I think you forgot a digit.
700 pieces of Star Wars for $75 today would be a bargain.

I wish SW would have two figures in a poly bag. In fact, I wish it would have a figure in a polybag. All the ones I see usually are just lame microbuilds unless we’re talking GWP

lololol"

7201, Final Duel II, was the same price and had Luke, a stormtrooper, and an officer. The complete duel was then $15 for five minifigures (three named characters) and two small builds ... Kind of like a battle pack.

Gravatar
By in United States,

2 for $5 at KB Toys in USA for 7200 and 7201 in 2004. Lego must have overproduced them, because there were many.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

I like the way how 7201 is named, 'Final Duel II'.

Gravatar
By in Hungary,

Surely I wasn't the only one who'd rotate the emperor's chair 180 and pretend he was manning a turret because of the tie cockpit piece used for the window.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

The really funny thing is that Final Duel II (7201) is set when Luke is captured at the Endor outpost. So, in a way we don’t actually see the duel as there wasn’t a third set (although there was no reason to make one).

This one was better overall, but I still don’t see why they could have combined the two, even if they just put Luke in here.

one of the my favorite lego ever
even this been just a little simple set now on and so on.

A yes, Palpatine's cane.

Gravatar
By in Italy,

One of the two sets that got me out of my dark age. Guess which one was the other one.

Even weirder is that, chronologically, Luke's set should be the one called Final Duel I.

Huwbot is on some duel tip. Which duel do we want to see tomorrow?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I honestly never even considered getting this set because I already had both minifigures already from 3340, and didn't really need duplicates... or a throne. I did think the concept of these little sets with part of a scene and a minifigure or two for cheap was fantastic, though: 7203 Jedi Defence I was my absolute favourite of them, since it provided a cheap way to get young Obi (before then, he'd only been available in 7161) AND the first-ever minifigure-scale destroyer droids.

I miss that Obi-Wan minifigure, honestly. Why did I sell that set, again?

But, yeah, the concept of these was good. Would love it if Lego did something like this again, ideally for the same cheap price!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

There’s two minifigures- Huwbot’s dual streak continues!

My understanding is that, at the time, Lego had a policy of not including direct conflict in sets. It was not until mid 2000s themes that Lego began doing this.

Plus Minifigures are typically the most expensive part of a set, so it makes sense for them to spread the costs out.

After the racers yesterday and this today, I can only hope that tomorrow we get our third duel themed set

Well then they failed spectacularly in 1999 because in we have Droids on STAPs attacking Qui-Gon and Jar Jar Binks, Qui-Gon and Darth Maul duke it out by a Moisture Vaporator, Battle Droids shooting at Anakin in a Naboo Starfighter, Darth Vader chasing a Y-Wing in his TIE Advanced, and Luke facing off against two Speederbikes. It depends on your stance of podracing with Mos Espa Podrace if there's conflict or not since it's a race, but a violent one with hidden weapons on Gasgano and Sebulba's podracers.

One of the few RSOTD that I actually owned and one of my favorite small/Star Wars sets. Good old days...

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Yooha:
The duel referenced in the name being that of Luke vs Vader (from my favorite scene in all six movies), this set gets you half of that duel, and the other set gets you the other half.
