Review: 76167 Iron Man Armoury

76125 Iron Man Hall of Armour elicited notable interest during 2019, including several splendid exclusive minifigures. 76167 Iron Man Armoury supplements the previous set, containing some additional storage modules which complement those produced last year.

Unfortunately, the associated minifigures seem somewhat disappointing when compared with the earlier set. One new Iron Man minifigure appears here which is great, although several others remain absent from the Marvel Super Heroes theme. Nevertheless, this set appears rather interesting based upon official images.

Minifigures

Tony Stark has appeared in comparatively few sets outside his Iron Man armour, although his availability here seems appropriate. This minifigure features an attractive hair piece with lovely texture and I like the double-sided head, although the blue heads-up display seems somewhat awkward until Tony dons his armour. Fortunately, the alternative printing is hidden beneath this hair piece.

Despite his astounding wealth, Tony typically wears plain shirts while tinkering in his workshop, hence this minifigure features a wrinkled light bluish grey garment. The torso was introduced in the Jurassic World range last year but seems similarly suitable here and complements the dark blue trousers, although they lack decoration.

76125 Iron Man Hall of Armour contains the classic MK I armour and another Prototype Iron Man minifigure is provided here. This example takes inspiration from the MK II armour which appeared during the original Iron Man movie, consisting almost exclusively of pearl silver components. The printing across this entire minifigure appears extraordinarily intricate and I love the exposed rivets that reflect the unrefined status of this prototype suit.

Iron Man minifigures based upon the Marvel Cinematic Universe have traditionally featured helmets with separate faceplates. Those pieces would have been appropriate here. However, this minifigure instead employs the newer helmet component which is somewhat disappointing, especially when displaying this armour alongside others with the correct helmet.

View image at Flickr

The shiny metallic silver panels which are printed on the helmet, torso and legs certainly stand out and similar highlights decorate the completed Iron Man. However, they are almost invisible among such an elaborate combination of metallic gold, dark red and red details. This minifigure has already appeared in five previous sets and looks magnificent, closely resembling the armour that appears during the new Avengers video game.

View image at Flickr

Both minifigures include trans-clear heads beneath the helmets and the second armour also features an excellent repulsor pack. A similar accessory appeared in 76107 Thanos: Ultimate Battle from 2019 but this version seems more refined than its predecessor, integrating smaller curved slopes while maintaining the four articulated repulsor units. The uppermost sections are both decorated with stickers and this figure carries two Power Blasts.

A.I.M. Agents have already appeared in seven sets during 2020, albeit sometimes featuring slightly different equipment. These two minifigures are completely identical though, wearing pearl dark grey helmets with matching breathing apparatus. That colour scheme continues across the torso and legs and looks marvellous in conjunction with flame yellowish orange accents.

View image at Flickr

The torso decoration is exceptionally impressive and displays A.I.M. branding while the head features an intimidating orange visor. Unfortunately, these two minifigures hardly resemble the numerous A.I.M. robots which appear during the new Avengers video game but they are highly detailed. Even so, I think broadening the selection of villains within the Marvel range would have been welcome this year.

The Completed Model

Tony Stark possesses an extraordinary car collection, including his powerful Ford Flathead Roadster which inspired the Iron Man colour scheme during the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This model seems fairly simple but compares favourably with the original vehicle, measuring 10cm in length and featuring a beautiful black, flame yellowish orange and red colour scheme.

View image at Flickr

Unfortunately, authentic whitewall tyres are not available but their differing sizes look realistic and I like the exposed engine detail, including angled cylinder blocks. The 1x2 rounded plates on each side appear especially effective, although the stud shooters which represent exhausts are rather awkward. I think this construction technique could work nicely on larger hot rods but they seem out of place here.

View image at Flickr

Striking flame stickers are applied on either flank, complementing the flame yellowish orange and yellow elements behind the engine. The different shades of yellow appear slightly odd but similar variation is visible on the stickers. In addition, the red interior corresponds precisely with the film and contrasts against the external black bodywork, to good effect.

View image at Flickr

Another sticker forms the number plate which also matches the original vehicle and I like the trans-red tail lights. The curved shape here looks great, accentuated by the smooth bodywork. However, the rear axle is elevated which creates a forward rake and accordingly deviates from the movie. This would be difficult to resolve without interfering with the aforementioned curve.

View image at Flickr

This set also contains a medium nougat crate which is decorated with stickers at either end. I like these stickers and the crate looks great, especially with various accessories placed on top. However, nothing is stored inside which seems disappointing. Some basic tools or perhaps the Stark Expo plans from Iron Man 2 would have been fantastic additions.

View image at Flickr

Upon escaping from captivity in Afghanistan and returning to American soil, Tony collects a cheeseburger. A lovely cheeseburger is therefore included and this features colourful pieces which represent cheese, lettuce and the burger. Moreover, an intricate sticker forms a realistic head gasket which makes reference to Iron Man, during which Tony removes this component from his hot rod.

Four armour storage bays and a small table comprise the primary model. These five modules are attached using clips so their relative angles can be adjusted which is wonderful for display. Exactly the same storage bay design appears in 76125 Iron Man Hall of Armour and I certainly appreciate such consistency, although these sections incorporate unique stickers.

View image at Flickr

Connecting these modules with 76125 Iron Man Hall of Armour provides ample space for ten different Iron Man minifigures, after the white equipment racks have been removed. They look remarkably impressive when displayed together and you can join the separate sections at both ends. Furthermore, you can stack the modules by removing the light bluish grey railings, more closely resembling the 'Wine Cellar' armour storage from Iron Man 3.

View image at Flickr

Metallic silver 1x2 grille slopes are fixed on each storage bay, along with sand blue and trans-light blue accents. I like this colour combination and the accompanying trans-light blue panels behind the storage bays look brilliant, featuring various stickers that display Iron Man armours. Their partial visibility is disappointing though because the light bluish grey parts obscure some enjoyable details.

View image at Flickr

Fortunately, the stickers become more visible when viewed from behind. They feature the 'Blazer' armour from 76166 Avengers Tower Battle, the War Machine minifigure from 76153 Avengers Helicarrier, the Iron Man Prototype that appears in this set and the standard 'Prime' armour which is also available here. The stickers are nicely detailed and their styling matches those produced for the previous Hall of Armour set during 2019.

View image at Flickr

Two additional stickers are applied on screens above the armour bays, making reference to Tony's cheeseburger and the Ford Flathead Roadster. The screens are mounted using pearl silver droid arms which are only otherwise found in 80014 Sandy's Speedboat. Their inclusion here is accordingly appreciated and the white tool rack looks reasonable, further corresponding with 76125 Iron Man Hall of Armour.

View image at Flickr

76042 The SHIELD Helicarrier introduced the first Iron Man nanofigure and another version appears here, standing inside a simple 3D printer. This white machine stands out against the light bluish grey workshop environment and includes a printed 1x1 tile with buttons on the side. Another printed tile represents a mobile phone and I like the 2x2 jumper plate underneath the printer, presumably depicting blueprints for the Iron Man prototype.

Overall

The exclusive Prototype Iron Man minifigure, inspired by the Mark II armour, is definitely my favourite aspect of this set. New versions of the character are always appreciated and I think this example looks tremendous, despite lacking the correct helmet. The quantity of additional minifigures is fantastic but another exclusive Iron Man minifigure would have been preferable rather than the standard dark red and metallic gold armour that has become prevalent during 2020.

View image at Flickr

I am pleased with Tony Stark's distinctive hot rod as well, even though the stud shooters look awkward in my opinion. The armour storage bays are attractive and these complement 76125 Iron Man Hall of Armour. Moreover, the price of £24.99 or $29.99 seems reasonable given the minifigure selection and I would recommend this set to augment its counterpart from 2019.

I really don't understand why they included 2 aim agents and the hot rod in this set. It's a hall of armour expansion, more armours please!

It truly is a wonderful set.

Just finished the main hall of armour set 10 minutes ago. Looking forward to this, shame the god awful AIM agents aren’t Outriders instead.

I need some aim agents. I already have nine outriders.

By in Puerto Rico,

I like it, but I actually prefer it for the micro Iron Man.

By in United States,

Although I am all for getting new pieces I actually wish the nanofigure were the same as the one from the helicarrier. Secondary market prices for that figure are exorbitant.

By in Netherlands,

I didn't know I liked this set so much until I saw this review! There are so many nice references to the original MCU Iron Man trilogy that aren't very noticable until you take a closer look and that I didn't expect to be there because this set isn't based on the MCU. I think I'm gonna pick this up sooner or later, just because it's so similar to a bunch of things in the original film(s) which I'm a big fan of. Thanks for the review!

I love the callout to The Mechanic from Ironman 3 with the hot rod in the garage

What are A.I.M. Agents supposed to be anyway?

By in Belgium,

In the brickset database, there’s only 4 minifigs entry for this set.

Nice addiction to the 76125, shame for the helmets :p

By in Switzerland,

The hot rod somehow reminded me of 6538

By in United States,

If the helmet on the Mk II is really that bothersome you could replace it with war machines helmet from set 76006. It won’t be as detailed but would work really well next to the other mcu armors

By in United Kingdom,

Did the MK II suit helmet flip up in the film? It's been a while since I've seen it. Maybe you could say this is before Tony added that feature.

I don’t think it does in Iron Man 1 but it does in Iron Man 2 when Rhodey uses it to fight drunk tony and when it becomes the mk 1 war machine armor

I literally was (and still am) planning on purchasing this set from Lego Shop @Home TODAY! I cannot believe this review came out on the same day! Your wonderful review highlights my reasons for it.

By in United States,

Pretty weak offering, IMO. Tony’s torso should have been new and shown his chest piece underneath his shirt. And the light flesh printing continues to be unacceptably bad.

Two AIM agents are not needed at all here and these designs are TERRIBLE. Give me the old beekeeper costumes from the comics any day of the week.

By in Denmark,

I don’t understand why they have used a The Avengers (video game) set to be an expansion set to a MCU set. That seems strange.

That 4 stud hot rod looks hot!

They’re basically MODOK’s henchmen... too specific? I’m afraid I don’t have a simpler description of them other than “bad guys from the new Avengers game”.

The idea of a less expensive Hall or Armor/Hall of Armor expansion is interesting but I feel like they could’ve included another armor area (or two) if they didn’t use as many pieces on the hot rod. At least we aren’t getting another IGOR Hulkbuster.

I think they are going for playability here, and having a car in this set improves it greatly.

Agents of the A.I.M organization

Tempted however I am attempting to only stick to sets from the MCU for now a lot of this years sets seems to be duplicates of previous sets and have AIM agents instead of outriders or Ultron.

The MK II minifig is the only thing that would tempt me to buy this set.

As the far larger 76125 is still available, I'm unsure of the need for this expansion set as the original 9 wall plates seemed more than enough, and thank you for the photo showing how over the top all 13 look. Possibly, TLG are just trying a cut-down set to meet a lower price bracket, and the hot rod is to add some variety. Personally, save your money for more interesting sets like the new 76153 helicarrier which has being reviewed on rebrickable.

By in Belgium,

Thanks for the review. We were also disappointed with the different style helmet. Great to get some more bays for Iron Mans though. We've stacked them on top of each other, I'll leave a picture on the forums behind the review if anyone is interested.
