Review: 70822 Unikitty's Sweetest Friends EVER!

70822 Unikitty's Sweetest Friends EVER! comes with two fantastical residents of the mysterious Systar System and really captured my attention when the sets were revealed. Ice Cream Cone and Chocolate Bar both seem quite interesting and incorporate some brand new elements.

Moreover, this set contains another exclusive version of Unikitty and seems to offer reasonable value, costing £8.99 in the UK or $9.99 in the US. It should therefore prove to be an excellent counterpart for the outstanding 70841 Benny's Space Squad, focusing upon an entirely different aspect of LEGO building!

Minifigures

Several new sets based upon The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part contain Unikitty, although this version of the character is unique and appears similar to the design from the original film. I like the figure's pink colour scheme and two facial expressions are included on separate 1x3 bricks, one showing a smile while the other seems prepared to lick Ice Cream Cone!

Unikitty's head is connected to her body using a 1x3 inverted tile. This component was created for the Unikitty! theme and provides a secure link, allowing you to rotate the head with ease. The tail and feet, on the other hand, have not been changed since The LEGO Movie from 2014 and these bright colours definitely capture Unikitty's fun personality.

However, my favourite figures in this set represent new characters. Ice Cream Cone serves as Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi's butler and looks magnificent, consisting of several printed pieces which correspond with a real ice cream cone! I am particularly impressed with the diamond texture covering both sides of the character's body and his articulated arms look fantastic as well.

A pink 3x3 dome forms the butler's head and this element may prove extremely useful elsewhere so I hope it will soon become available in alternative colours and without printing. The inverted cone at the base is also new and this figure stands on a trans-clear 2x2 dish. Ice Cream Cone comes with a white mug.

Chocolate Bar presumably hails from the same part of the Systar System as Ice Cream Cone, taking inspiration from its namesake. I like this character's large eyes and the chocolate is formed using reddish brown ingots which have not appeared in this colour previously. Furthermore, a bite has been taken out of Chocolate Bar! This is a fun detail and the irregular shape of the red wrapper works perfectly.

The Completed Model

Characters are the primary focus of this set and the actual model seems insignificant by comparison. This dessert cart appears similar to previous models but includes five white 1x2 rounded plates which could be used in other creations. A pink teapot, a mug and a large chocolate cake are placed on top, the latter of which causes me to wonder whether every sweet foodstuff is actually alive in the Systar System!

Overall

Unusual characters such as those found in 70822 Unikitty's Sweetest Friends EVER! might not appeal to everyone but I am pleased with this set. Ice Cream Cone and Chocolate Bar are interesting and the new pieces found in Ice Cream Cone promise considerable potential, despite being of limited use with these printed designs.

A more substantial model would have been welcome but the price of £8.99 or $9.99 seems reasonable in my opinion. On that basis, I would certainly recommend adding this set to your collection, although 70841 Benny's Space Squad occupies the same price point and should probably be prioritised.

Behind Benny Space Squad this is one my favourite LEGO Movie 2 sets without doubt. I love the chocolate guy, ice cream and unikitty is a nice addition

Ok, they would both look great in a big unikingdom display!

Okay, the chocolate bar figure and the icecream cone look awesome! I´ll buy this set asap! I think unikitty looks a bit "girlish" but I do want those other two figures! :-D

By in Netherlands,

They didn't use the 1x3 inverted tile for Warrior Kitty in Emmet's house, possibly because it's a 2-in-1. with 2 versions (sleeping and warrior kitty)

Overall, still think this is a hilarious and fair priced set.

Seeing more of those Technic-pin arms used for characters is just a great use of the part (see ice cream cone) to make non-minifig torso that still are sort of minifig scale.

By in Germany,

This is the only set of the Unikitty ones I will get as
a) the chocolate bar is just great, as is the ice cream cone, and
b) it is the only set in the Unikitty theme that is not ridiculously overpriced

That chocolate bar is brilliant.

By in United States,

We go from Benny’s space squad to this?

Kinda a sharp transition don’t ya think?

The 3x3 dome seems well suited to represent astromech droid heads in UCS sets in the future, currently some of them use out-of-scale minifig astromechs.

I need those chocolate ingots for a MOC I'm currently working on. I hope these will be available for sale soon.

By in Puerto Rico,

Only Emmett house for me as I have said but the crazy desings on this theme are awesome, the other unofficially announced/revelaed set is also in my wishlist along the UCS MF.

By in United Kingdom,

How come the cylinder in the ice cream can have a print front and back, but after 20 years we're still waiting for R2 to have a printed back?

And those brown ingots look good enough to eat!

I loved the Lego Movie sets and it looks like I'm gonna love the Second Part sets too. It seems that all their movie sets are just better finished, use interesting parts/techniques and often include alternative models like the old days. More sets like these please Lego!

This is definitely on my "must buy" list, in terms of the sequel's sets.

Just one question. With the minidolls, the "systar system", how the first movie nutted out, and the general visuals from the trailer ... we've all figured out the plot and story for this one already, haven't we? We already know what's going to happen, and what moral they're trying to reach, right?

^Either they will go the obvious route that a lot of people are assuming. OR they will somehow turn it on its head and trick all of us. Either way, as long as it is entertaining it can be obvious. Most movies are anyway.

By in Norway,

Grabbed one of each of these mini sets when they were put out just before Xmas - but will keep them boxed until we have seen the full movie and can get that extra “ooooh aaaah” connection

Must say that overall very happy with the mix and variety for LGM2 sets, and having built Rexplorer and the house version of Rescue Rocket 2in1 also with the design

By in Canada,

@Your future president: I mean, Brickset's just starting their reviews out with the two lowest priced sets, both of which are very character-focused. I don't think that's so peculiar.

@Zordboy: I think it's probably safe to say that as with the first movie, there will be SEVERAL different lessons/messages, both for the movie as a whole and for individual characters' story arcs. I definitely have some idea what some of those might be this time around, but even if I'm right on all counts, I doubt that will make me enjoy the movie any less or be any less surprised by some of the twists and turns along the way.

Anyway, good review! New Unikitty designs are always a delight, even if this one isn't as unique as some that we've seen in other sets. Ice Cream Cone and Chocolate Bar are both great designs with lots of personality and creative use of both new and existing parts! The tea/sweets cart adds some nice role play possibili-teas, and it's also nifty that it uses five of the new-for-2018 2x2 curved plate instead of standard 2x2 plates and bricks.

As far as new pieces go, I am always excited to see new circular parts with a one and a half or three stud radius, as those tend to be far less common than parts with a one, two, or four stud radius. Ice Cream Cone's arms are also a nifty recolor of a very useful part for building brick-built figures. It will be interesting to see what the 2x2x2 inverted cone might be used for in the future.

Still really hoping for a Dark Azur recolor of that teapot in the future that can be used for Ninjago sets and MOCs, though. Several of the 2015 Ninjago sets had Wu's classic teapot in Dark Azur, but at that time they were still using the genie lamp element which is much less suited to use as a teapot than this newer element.

I also wonder when/if we might ever see a teacup element rather than just reusing the coffee mug. Belville had a teacup element — in chrome, no less! — but that was a long time ago and it was probably not quite up to modern design standards.

This is definitely on my wish list, particularly since I feel like Chocolate Bar and Ice Cream Cone are a lot less likely to show up in other future sets than minifigure characters. Thanks for the review, and looking forward to other LEGO Movie 2 reviews!

I'm hungry now.

@Aanchir Trelawney from the Harry Potter minifigures series has a new teacup piece and saucer piece.

This looks like a great parts pack...absolutely love the new elements! That 3x3 new dome piece looks very useful for MOCS. Really love the new cone piece too! I've always had to suffice by putting a regular 2x2x2 cone upside down, attached to a 2x2 round tile with hole in the center.....not anymore! Also, look at all the new printed parts!

By in Netherlands,

I bought this set, just for the ice cream cone. For example, this stands beautifully on the sidewalk of the dinner
