Today's random set is 7745 High-Speed City Express Passenger Train Set, released in 1985. It's one of 6 Trains sets produced that year. It contains 736 pieces and 10 minifigs.

What a passenger train set with doors and passengers?!?!
Hard to believe that they got the look of the front of older high speed trains with the standard parts of the era, as opposed to a big single part.
So when I got that 4.5V battery train, it had this European Trains catalog with this set plus all the other 12V stuff - the lights, the motor operated points; everything. It was awesome and I’d spend hours looking through it dreaming of what could be.
Man I miss that catalog.
I love so many of the old trains, but I tell myself I don’t need to get into another system having some 9v and a few power functions trains. But these ones look so much better! Brick built, doors, and the cool lighting system...hard to resist.
Beautiful, beautiful train. There's no other way to describe it. Doors, large windows, gorgeous exterior, detailed interiors ... today's trains just don't hold a candle to these old ones. I'm sorry to play that card, but I'm not really because they just don't.
I have only really gotten into LEGO over the last 5 years or so and never had any sets at all when I was kid. That being said, I prefer the look of this set over the new ones as well. I think there is something to be said for the brick built look and method instead of something so smooth, and using specialized bricks, that it just looks like a model of the vehicle.
Oooh, how I wanted to have this train as a child. Still looks appealing. As an adult I bought the Horizon Express to fill this childhood dream.
Its a shame there's only one image under the '7745' set entry. Can anybody add some more?
The pinnacle of trains... 12V and red. I'm glad I managed to get this one from my parents back then. Recovered it a few years ago, bought new rubber bands for the wheels and off it went... My daughter loves it top :)
Absolute classic - this was the dream set to own in the late 80s (well, this and the monorail obviously!).
It’s probably the mostly widely available and best value 12v set on the secondary market (relative to the amount of money most of the other sets change hands for anyway!) - I bought a second one shortly after existing my dark ages to convert a power car to power functions so I could run it on modern track for a quick ‘12v train hit’ as it’s much easier for quick set up/tear down than grey era track.
^ My daughter loves it too - it’s her go-to train set, ahead of 7938 and 60051. She’s fascinated with the doors!

Classic train from a classic era that never returns. Beautifully designed exterior and interior, just look at the enormous brick built engines inside, the tap, the luggage holder, full lightening supply, coffee bar and many minifigures. My childhood train system was 9v, which I like very much, but 12v is much superior to it with all the remote controlled electric points, decoupling, signals and road crossing. I can imagine that for those who have a a large 12v layout joy never ends and this is what lego is all about not vitrine models.
Yup, arguably my most beloved set from my youth. It is still capable of running, at about 30 years of age. The only issue is the motor, that needs to be warmed up (unloaded running) before having to pull the full weight of the train.
My little cousins have (had) a lot of fun with it....
Christmas 89. I was six. Down at my grandparents for Christmas. This. Had to scoop it up from the living room and take it up to the room my sister and I were sharing so that I could build it, rather than my dad and uncle.
It's still in my parent's loft. It runs. Runs fairly well. The main issue is the traction tyres- long perished! Still even have some of the lights in working order.
