A classic - so good it was rereleased!

Mine came with the extra horse from the Western line...

It's a cool little set and I'm happy to have it, but I must confess that I never understood the massive love for the original set. Is it the rare panel pieces? Or the fact that it's a rare civilian building rather than a military fortress? Don't get me wrong, I like it and I like all the classic castle stuff, but Guarded Inn was never in my top 10.

All these older castle sets have a certain charm about them. While certainly not great sets by today's standards, the have a nice balance of simplicity and genuineness.

Such a cute set. I love the town/civilian aspect of this set. I've always wanted to have it; I do have the female minifigure because I own the Knight's Challenge set. When this came out, I was into the football/soccer subtheme of LEGO Sports and the Star Wars theme also.

I get why things like the Metroliner or Pizza To Go were rereleased, but no, I gotta be honest, I've never quite seen the appeal of this one. But then I'm more of a town/train fan, so, each to their own.

This set looks good but that INN has no bed and place to sit only one minifig and no action features...

Interesting. I suppose this is the first 10xxx set ever, when that code was for rereleases instead of D2Cs.

I had this set and I'm pretty sure it wasn't released in 2001, more like 1980-something, or was it re-releasled?

@Iron_Paladin yes it was rereleased in 2001. The original set had the set number 6067-1. You can see that at the set details of 10000. In the early 2000s more legendary sets have been rereleased e.g. some western sets (Fort Legoredo, Rapid River Village, Sheriff's Lock-Up). There also exists a tag called legends https://brickset.com/sets/tag-Legends which contains some of the rereleased sets. The other rereleased castle set was 10039-1 Black Falcon's Fortress in 2002.

Many many hours of play with this one. A re release for sure because I had it as a child so more than 35 years ago. It was my first civilian build in castle line and took a very particular and important role in that point of view. A very good complement to the castles, it's still complete today and has lost nothing of its charm, the design is still modern and playful. Five star rate IMO.

This "random" set of the day has a great affinity for classics.

I have had so much fun with this set. Combined with 6040 blacksmith, 6041 armourshop and 6073 kings castle it was good for hours off playtime!

I don't know why Lego stopped re-releasing those classic sets, I believe it was too difficult to remake some discontinued parts and with the color change and all they probably don't feel / look like their vintage counterparts anymore. Having said that, I think there is a demand and market for those sets and it would be great it Lego went the extra mile to give us only one classic set per year in a perfect vintage box.

^Space fans did not handle the change to the bleys well at all. I’m almost 100% positive that’s why the Classic Space sets never saw a re-release.

I've been really enjoying this feature! I'm glad Huw put this in place as it's certainly prompted me to delve into the back catalogue of sets :)

This is one of the few castle sets I had as a child. Still have some of the pieces kicking around including the neat red and black wall pieces. Like others said, with the end of nexo knights I’m hoping to see a castle line with sets closer to this one.

The re-release of this set was important for me. It was the first set I bought after MY DARK AGES!! I was in Köln, Germany, as Erasmus student, and when I sas this at the Official Lego Store, I bought it. All my mates were confused, but I needed to connect to my childhood. I did not have the original one, so I need this civil set among my classic Castle sets!! I was so proud to have it!!

The original was a 1986 release but I got it early in 1985 as a special offer from Bricks 'n' Pieces magazine, where they referred to it as "The Inn on the Wall", and I've known it as that ever since. It's one of my favourite castle sets, but I'd be hard pressed to say exactly why. Maybe because it packs a little bit of everything into a small, affordable set? It's also one of the few sets from that era that I still have assembled, which I think speaks volumes.

@lordofdragonss: Yes, this lack of interior detail and livable spaces was sadly the norm with classic castle sets. That's part of why I so greatly prefer themes like Nexo Knights and Elves, and I hope those livable spaces are a design cue that carries over to the next Castle theme. These days even LEGO City prisons feel more hospitable than traditional castle sets, and if an outrageously over-the-top theme like Nexo Knights can be packed full of crazy action features and still have room in the budget for livable spaces, a traditional Castle theme has no excuse for not including these features!

Now when you look at https://brickset.com/sets/41174-1/The-Starlight-Inn (released 30 years after the original Guarded Inn and 15 years after the re-issue), there's an inn that really feels like someplace I might actually like to stay… and adjusted for inflation, it actually cost less than either version of the Guarded Inn!

@yamaki: Unfortunately, the "LEGO Legends" re-releases like this one generally weren't very popular or successful. Designer Jamie Berard talked a bit about some of the reasons for that in this post on the Brickset forums: http://bricksetforum.com/discussion/comment/57672/Comment_57672

It doesn't help that for the large and thriving KFOL demographic, classic sets like these rarely measure up to what they've come to expect from more modern sets. Even many AFOLs these days would have grown up with newer and more advanced sets, so the audience for throwback sets like this is primarily limited to active LEGO fans who experienced the originals, many of whom may already have them.

@peterlmorris: That color change to bley.. maybe. It is more likely that with Star Wars and LEGO likely partnering forever, you will only see random space line creations like Galaxy Squad, or even Space police III, but never see classic space again, which is a shame, because LEGO had some really great classic space designs which would work well even with bley IMO.

As for Guarded Inn, I only got a 10000 version first, then interestingly I found one an original 6067 in a LEGO lot so I have the original now. I think the main driving theme for collectors was a 'peace time' set for Castle (when it seemed all Castle back then was related to combat or fighting, with the exception maybe of the Blacksmiths shop), and those red castle panels were sought after by people as well. All in all a neat little castle set and since the early castles were the first 'mods' it could be connected to other castle wall sets.

I got the original as a birthday present back in 86, and remember finding it before it was wrapped, which made me super excited.

My Castle town back then included the 6041: Armor Shop and 6080: King's Castle, plus a few buildings I attempted to make fit the walled theme as much as I possibly could as a 7 years-old kid, as well as 6081-1: King's Mountain Fortress joining in a few years later, overlooking it all from a nearby desk. But the Inn was, and remained, among my favourite buildings, just out of sheer originality.

I will join the voices asking for a renewed Castle theme that would include more daily, regular, peace-time life. I would assume it is unlikely, though.

I believe this set was loved by many due to the lack of civilian buildings back then (something that I didn't mind as a kid though) plus due to the many minifigs it contained and their "right" analogy (1 hostess, one knight, two guards). So many stories to re-enact with them. Knight was a friend or a foe? The lady is a captured fair one or an old hag? What about the guards? Who do they protect? etc etc etc. Sets like this and evergreen themes (Castle, Pirates etc) made TLG the company it is today...
