Review: 30607 Disco Batman - Tears of Batman

Batman is equipped with a vast array of specialised suits in The LEGO Batman Movie, two of which are included in 30607 Disco Batman - Tears of Batman. This polybag is currently available with any purchase of over £50 at LEGO stores in the UK and will soon be released as part of a similar offer in North America.

It is highly unusual to see two minifigures included in a single polybag, particularly in licensed themes such as this one. This tiny set is therefore sure to prove very popular with fans of The LEGO Batman Movie and even more so with collectors of the numerous batsuits which fill the Batcave in the film.

Minifigures

The Disco Batman suit allows the Caped Crusader to infiltrate dance clubs with ease so appears to have limited applications, although it may be useful when facing the villainous Music Meister. The printing on the torso recalls the fashion of the 1970s, featuring a white jacket with a flared collar and purple trim as well as a bat-shaped necklace. An area of exposed skin reveals some hair on Batman's chest and he wears a purple utility belt which only appears in two other sets.

Removing the cape and cowl reveals some more detail on the back of the torso as well as the printing on the head which includes angry and bemused expressions. The eyes are represented by a white headband, as usual, but some of the new Batman heads include squinting eyes to convey greater emotion than past figures have offered.

No disco attire would be complete without something shiny and Batman has taken that to the extreme! The figure sports a pearl gold cowl and metallic cape, both of which form part of the Bat Pack suit from 70909 Batcave Break-In, along with a pair of golden roller skates for use in case Batman should be required at a roller disco.

The Tears of Batman minifigure is named after the 1970 Smokey Robinson & The Miracles hit 'Tears of a Clown' and is accordingly designed to resemble a clown. This conflicts with Batman's typically dour personality but would be perfect for covert operations around the Joker. Its bright colour scheme makes it stand out among the other Batsuits and I like the red cowl very much, particularly since it has not appeared in this colour before.

The head is printed with a smile on one side and a grimace on the other so differs from that on the Disco Batman minifigure. It might have been nice to see a more comical expression for this figure but at least he is smiling. The torso features large polka dots, a bow tie and suspenders on the front but is left blank on the back. Luckily this is obscured by the cape which is made from the original stiff material and has not appeared in green before.

Overall

I love the enormous range of outlandish Batsuits featured in The LEGO Batman Movie and this polybag makes an excellent addition to the collection. These are the eleventh and twelfth versions to have been released so far and are among my favourites alongside the Raging Bat, the Bat Pack and Vacation Batman. Both minifigures are highly detailed and they look great alongside the rest of the range, with a bright colour scheme and suitably comical appearance.

On the other hand, it might have been nice to see a unique Joker minifigure in one of his many outfits, just to offer some greater variety and play value. The pilot garb seen in the fifth trailer is a particular favourite of mine! Nevertheless, if you have the opportunity to acquire this polybag then I would highly recommend it.

By in United States,

I'm looking forward to finding out what minifigure will be released with the Blu-Ray, if any.

My biggest disappointment to date is that we never got a Lindo Calrissian figure with any of the Yoda Chronicles releases.

By in Philippines,

Isn't this the first appearance of Batman's pointed cape in green? The only green capes in the Avengers line are the standard type.

Mmmmh.... no gold, purple, green, red etc. battarangs included. :-/
Thanks for the review!
The minifigs sure look outlandish, love the gold and red cowl, disco torso, as well as the gold cape.
Might have to order something from LLEGO.com.

@CapnRex101 What pilot suit? I got intrigued and viewed the fifth trailer but couldn't see a pilot suit. Also, thanks for the review of the suits. They will look nice in his Bat wardrobe.

By in Netherlands,

Did the Music Meister ever appear outside of Batman The Brave and the Bold?

Anyway, great review.

I hope they do the Uncle Sam Batsuit and the St Patricks day Batsuit that are shown in the Choas in Gotham activity book.

Very nice review, fun minifigs!

By in United Kingdom,

The clown suit is also pretty much a direct recolouring of the series 1 cmf circus clown and the disco suit taking heavy design cues off the series 2 cmf disco dude from what I can see.

By in United States,

I think instead of gave us Exclusive Emmet at the theater like we had for the Lego Movie, this time, Lego rather increase the sales number and give the Exclusive at the Lego Retail Store

By in United States,

That gold cape though.

@Binnecamp
Music Meister is appearing in a Flash/Supergirl crossover and I think was in lego Batman 3.

By in United Kingdom,

Oh wow, I didn't know the cape was gold! SO tempting, but I shouldn't buy any more Lego for a while.

I do plan on getting this, unless they run out. But I don't love all of the wacky Batman suits. It is neat seeing new colors. And the gold cape looks to be the same in the Batcave, right? So that's neat.

I do have a problem though with the Disco Batman. He has chest hair, which is necessary for that particular suit, but his casual Lobster Lovin' Batman figure has no chest hair...so which is it LEGO, huh?

And the Joker is wearing something like a pilot's uniform when he is telling the other pilot that those wacky villains are in fact real and not made up. Two-thirds of the way through the trailer maybe?

By in Australia,

Ordered the Assembly Square, used some VIP points as well, was specifically waiting for this polybag release.

By in United Kingdom,

These minifigs were enough for me to put an order in at Lego.com. Killer croc tail-gator was the set for me. That giant Killer croc figure almost justified the price, that and I had £10 on my VIP card!

I've been going back and forth on whether or not to put in an order at shop.lego.com when the promo goes live for North America... I absolutely love how silly these two minifigs are, and I want that red cowl to make a red version of the Batman included in two Juniors sets (10672 & 10724).

By in United States,

I want that gold cape

By in United Kingdom,

Great review. Disappointed the gold cape is black on one side though, gold on both sides would have been so much more Disco. I know it could be treated as one cape, two disguises but still.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Weirdest part of the disco suit? No gloves.

Batman ALWAYS wears gloves.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Seriuous? So much complains????? I think this is an outstanding Polybag....i would sell one of my kidneys for one of these XD

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

I don't understand the appeal in these.
The CMF-series already contained way too many and uninteresting Batman-versions.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I dont understand either lol, but these would look great as extra suits for the batcave break in set. Which would be the main reason for me to get that set n the suits.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@Sethro3 the chest hair is part of this disguise, obviously!

I can't decide whether I like the fact that the clown prints have no bats included - makes them more useful long-term but loses the Bat theme.

By in United Kingdom,

Nice review Cap'n, though when worn by a man a 'necklace' is generally called a medallion.

there is also a minifig holder album for £12.99 that you can buy too.
