Why was 76039 Ant-Man Final Battle delayed?

Posted by ,

It has been well documented that the release of 76039 Ant-Man Final Battle was briefly delayed earlier this month for reasons unknown until now. The finalised set has now been released worldwide so, with both versions of the set available, the differences between the two have been identified.

The legs were criticised in early reviews of the set as they were liable to buckle if excessive pressure was applied from above. That issue has now been rectified with the addition of two extra pieces to each leg which greatly increase their sturdiness; a short Technic axle and a cone. You can see the change shown in the instruction manual above. The box on the other hand has not changed so North American versions still show a piece count of 183 and the set images still show the set's original design.

We will have to wait and see whether the value of the original set will increase given its very limited release period. For the most fervent of Super Heroes collectors it might be a nice curiosity to own but given that only the instructions are truly exclusive I don't think the appeal will be substantial.

Very interesting. So if I buy the set and remove the two extra parts could I
resell it for $40? xD

Actually not that uncommon though :P Last time I remember a set was available in 2 different build variations was 79104 from 2013. Oh, and there were quite many Space sets from 1984-1994 that had this too^^

^Yep, would also be interested if there is a way to tell such sets apart without opening...

Interesting. I definitely have the original set, and do not find the leg structure especially weak. I guess it may be a moderate issue if you're trying to seat Ant-Man on it, but even if it collapses, it's easily fixed.

Atuin, I believe that each set variation, such as this, has a special number printed on the seal of the box, or stamped in next to bar code... so all we need is someone to read the code on each of the boxes, and be on the lookout for the one you want :)

I got it recently and it didn't have the added parts.

Yeah, I managed to get a hold of the original release of the set.

I bought a first-run at the LEGO Store two days ago. Black axles and 1x1 cones are super common, so it was an easy fix. It stands up fine without the extra parts, but I could see it being a problem over time.

That reminds me of the 10213 Shuttle Adventure affair, when LEGO added 26 extra parts to reinforce the model and offered an upgrade kit to customers. But in that particular case, they also re-released the corrected product as 10231 Shuttle Expedition. :)
I just called LEGO Customer Service and they're sending me the Ant-Man leg parts and corrected instruction sheet. :)

so basically wait until the new version is mainstream and then you get a few extra pieces "for free."

I wanted the set either way and wasn't planning on building it, so it probably doesn't matter much to me. I just want the figures.

This sort of thing is very curious.

They waited until the set was about to be released before noticing there were significant structural problems and had to change it?

Isn't that the sort of thing you'd notice and fix a lot *earlier* in the production process?

Well that's very interesting. I think the new version is a little worst, the legs are pushed too much in the back, considering that they can't be turned sideway. Still a nice model!

I have two sets of them and the tape is different. I'm going to return one, but I want the set with the extra pieces. Can someone with the earlier set post the numbers that's on the tape.

It's still only available in parts of the UK. It hasn't come to anywhere near me yet, either at home or where I study, though my local Argos says it will be in stock within a week or so.

I ordered mine on the 5th and was told to expect it between the 15th and the 18th. Well, it's the 18th and it's not here. Though, a couple days ago I got an email regarding a delay...
The Toys R Us site just says it's located in stock.

I'm getting really annoyed.

@QWONOS, the tape on mine is "12R5", as mentioned above I have the original, non replacement set. Hope this helps you.

Thanks Poobah! I have a 18R5 and 22R5. Looks like I will keep the higher 22 one.

I think this is a better model and i do think that the original will most likely not be worth more money but people will still scramble for it.

I had to ask about it at Target and they said they should have put it out weeks ago but didnt. However I did receive a first-run aswell. Kinda glad I did, because then I have the instrcutionsame and can easily rectify the problem.

I ordered this set from Lego.com on July 1st and got it today. It didn't include the extra parts and the instructions were the old version. So the unfixed version of the set is still being sold in some capacity by Lego themselves.
