The set is titled forklift even thought the main build is the plane...

By in United States,

Forklift can turn into a plane for very tall stacking, or into a Tron Cycle for digital storage.

RETERN TO THE PITS OF HECK FROM WHENCE THOU COMEST, ZNAP!

Okay, but seriously, you could show me images of Znap sets and I would have absolutely zero clue they were LEGO products

Gravatar
By in United States,

That forklift build isn't even half bad actually.

Gravatar
By in United States,

A forklift? Is anyone here certified to operate one?

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I want to say "Tron Cycle", but clearly that's a quad...:)

By in United States,

The forklift is my favorite propeller-based flight vehicle

Unfortunately, that was kinda the point. Lego was losing customers to K'nex (or possibly just paranoid about that happening), so they attempted their own clone of it. Of course, it bombed, it cost them a ton of money with all of the new parts they had to produce, and it's a testament to the fairly bad shape Lego was in at the time that they were willing to stoop down to the level of copying their own imitators.

I don't think Dr. Eggman posts here, so no

I bet Jack Stone loved these.

And that plane is capable of lifting forks. Quite high, as it turns out.

I am. During my years working in the plastics industry, I even managed to clear an 11' wide load through a 10' wide doorway. Carrying pinbar by hand sucks, and that saved us about 30' on foot, so totally worth the effort.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Is this even LEGO? It kind of half reminds me of a different construction based toy from about a decade before this. Not K'nex though.

I used to work in a warehouse, and while I was never a forklift operator, I drove their little brothers, pallet jacks.

I never thought I would see a Znap RSotD! The purple connector was referenced in 71741.
Also, anyone know what happened to the RPotD?

I don't think many people here anymore are certified to operate anything.

Except, perhaps, the Tron cycle.

I have the licences to operate the plane and the bike but not the forklift.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@StyleCounselor (and @PurpleDave): Well; I was qualified/certified in forklift driving until earlier this year, because the company I worked for downside last year and I'm no longer there, And the place I work at now doesn't even have forklifts, so yeah...:)

By in Turkey,

Just by looking at it execs in Lego should have said "This is not Lego". Thank god it's short lived.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I never saw the 1999 Znap range in USA stores. Toys R Us had the 1998 range on DEEP discount so I got a couple to see if they could work like Technic for structural support, but to this day I never have used the three sets I bought.

Znap? There's a name I've not heard in a long, long time...

Well, really since the last time it popped up on RSotD, but I'm trying to wax nostalgic here

Gravatar
By in United States,

Geez, 90’s Lego was really a mess. It’s amazing that company survived… I had never heard of whatever the hell “Znap” is until just now. What marketing genius got hit in the head and came up with that name?

It only lasted a year so it's easy to miss.
They tried so much at that time

It was essentially LEGO trying to emulate Meccano, which was gaining in popularity at the time. Have no idea how the name came to be though.

The LEGO logo is a pretty big giveaway.

By in Netherlands,

Never seen this before, looks very un-Lego....indeed looks more like K'nex.

That said, just 39 pieces (and te database only has the rubber bands...), yet instructions for 9 quite varied builds (to be fair, some rather simple) and a few inspirational pictures? They sure put some effort into it...

See Huw's post in the comments here:
https://brickset.com/article/111392/random-part-of-the-day-lattice-3x6-w-3-2-shaft-no-1

Basically there's been so much trouble with the parts having missing pictures that they're putting it on hold for now"

Lot of people seem to have missed that one, given hoe many people have asked "What happened to the RPotD?!" since. Also, @Endermen39, this is actually the second Znap RSotD: https://brickset.com/article/95893

To be fair, how often do you look back at previous RPotD? If it had to be noticed, a separate article about it would have done wonders....
(and I hope it's only temporary....)

I just had to Google whether K'nex is still going... zero results on the Smyth's Toys website indicates that it's not.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Regarding RPotD, I was disappointed with the removal too, but as I happen to have been trying to piece together old sets for the last couple of weeks, I'm starting to understand what Huw is saying lol. OMG there's so many sets where like a third of the part listings are missing images, I kind of have to guess the part that I'm looking for based on the color (the name almost never helps - I'm wondering if this can be refined btw?)

@8lackmagic said:

Just Googled it myself because I haven't thought of that - Wikipedia says that they were bought out in 2018, and that parent company filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this year, but supposedly it's still around. I remember this site mentioning in Lego's earning report last year that the toy industry got hit pretty bad with unsustained pandemic growth in 2023, so I imagine that's related.

Everyone gets ZNAP wrong. It is not a KNEX clone, it's a Construx clone.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Why znap? There’s better Lego themes than this.

By in United States,

@brick_r:
I don’t know how it works in Canada, but in the US, unless you’re driving a street-legal outdoor forklift, certification is done by the employer, not the government. So yeah, changing jobs would void your certification.

@OptimShi:
They cloned K’Nex for the system, and clearly took inspiration from the name as well.

@WizardOfOss:
Looking at the previous day is easiest if you can get in through the current day. When there’s no day, you have to dig a bit deeper first.

Idk, looking up this "Construx", I'd still say that Znap looks way closer to K'nex, which also seems to have been more relevant at the time. Although I guess the interlocking method more closely resembles the former, yeah.

Yeah, I had a Construx spaceship as a kid and I own one Znap set that I found at a yard sale (3551), and the two systems' construction styles are, upon reflection, quite similar., althoughI can think of some differences. I don't think Lego was trying to emulate Construx, though. Per Wikipedia, "Construx was discontinued in 1988, briefly revived by Mattel in 1997, and then discontinued again." Znap was 1998-1999, so why would Lego would choose to copy a building toy that had been dead for a decade and had a very brief, failed revival? It's entirely possible that Lego just happened to hit upon a Construx-like style of construction in their attempt to emulate K'nex.
