Vintage set of the week: Sea Plane

This week's vintage set is 371 Sea Plane, released during 1977. It's one of 14 LEGOLAND sets produced that year. It contains 47 pieces.
It's owned by 524 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you might find it for sale at BrickLink or eBay.

Unfortunately for this set, its time on this mortal plane has come to an end...
Reborn this summer as 60425!
With a piececount of 47 someone at half the set.
Oooo, proto-figs. Nice. If it weren't for them, I'd say this set looks quite a bit older than 1977.
We only get VSotW, you guessed it, once a week, and despite the odds, a same set gets chosen!

Funny story time:
Got this as a Christmas ’77 present from my Grandma…in March/April ’78…’say whaaat’ you ask; well as a child I had a tendency to accidentally find my Christmas presents at my Grandparents, so she hid it…so well she couldn’t find it…The following year, I stayed/slept over at my Grands; and my Grandma steps around the corner into the front room with the set, telling me the whole story…it still makes me smile thinking about it. :D
This set would make a great modern GWP set. Picture it in your mind...

I believe it was something to do with Samsonite losing the licence in the early 1970's to produce Lego in the US. For some reason this meant the US editions of Lego sets had different set numbers to everywhere else.
This was a RSOTD very recently!
I'd love to see a remake of this with contemporary parts and printed minifigures.
Well there’s some Deja Vu; at least this one has a better image
32-stud wings! That’s baseplate sized!
And a 5-wide propeller.
An important reminder that studs are friends, not foes.
They're also not food, but I suppose that should have gone without saying.

I got mine for Christmas 1977, too! I also got 400 that Christmas. I believe 400 was from my parents, and the Sea Plane from my grandparents.
The product photo here is superb, the lighting, the angle, the colours. That's the money shot right here!

Unlike the RSotD pool, the VSotW pool shrinks by one set every week. Well, *technically* the RSotD pool shrinks every day, but it also grows by a large amount every few months.

My mom has been known to lose presents that way as well, although she always manages to find them before the day.
I have this set and there is no way it only has 47 pieces. So I went to the instructions and counted the pieces. Just the boat has 15 pieces (+4 for the minifig). The plane has 92 parts (+4 for the second minifig) for a total of 115.
Edit: set 712 is described as a set containing 115 pieces.
The link to the inventory shows 39 different pieces, with a total of 106 parts. So how 47 was decided upon, I’d love to know :)
I find it pretty good, very cool for a set of its age.

@Huw, It seems to be taking the total different parts, not the total parts, from the rebrickable inventory, and then added the correct number of extra parts for he minifigs.

RSotD pool shrinks by one each day, and grows by about 500-600 every January 1st. Year of release is the only consideration for when an eligible set is added to the pool.
https://brickset.com/article/107885 is set 712 and this one is 371. I still have sealed 712. I used to have one as a kid and I had to buy another. I plan to open it when I retire. Together with 699. In 8 or so years. I hope.
