Tranquilizer darts? A cage? You gotta take the 2005 approach and just blow this thing up Dino Attack style. It doesn't belong in this time period, it's species went extinct for a reason.

By in New Zealand,

The Dino theme was awesome, I liked their military-style vehicles. Although Dino "2010" from 2005 provided better ones.

To me the Dino theme felt like it didn't really have an identity; it was essentially a less-edgy do-over of Dino Attack. It definitely introduced some good new molds and the tranquilizer approach was definitely novel, but when you're not creative enough to come up with a real name for your 2010s Lego theme, you know not a lot of thought was given to the specifics beyond the new molds.

[That said, I prefer Agents to Ultra Agents due to pure nostalgia, so that point is hypocritical.]

That entire them can be summed up like this:

Yellow vs. Dinosaurs.

By in United States,

"Are two tranq darts really enough to take one of these down?"
"No, but it's enough to knock both of us out so we don't feel anything when it eats us."

The main character of this theme, Josh Thunder, was a descendent of the legendary Johnny Thunder. The dinosaurs he helped capture were actually a scheme from the Pluuvian Empire to take over Earth after their failures in the Alien Conquest theme. Aside from that, not much lore.

I made sure to get this set as it had a Sikorsky Skycrane-style helicopter And a T. rex, which are two things I've long been a fan of.

"Not much lore" says the lore master!

I am glad we got this theme. It gave us new dinosaur molds!! And I love Dinosaurs. I am only a couple away from having every variant of post 2012 dinosaur mold. (Colour and type.)

By in Australia,

What I loved about this era of "Dinosaurs" was -- aside from the fact that we were finally getting some really cool specific dinosaur molded pieces -- but what I loved was that it was basically "Jurassic Park" with the serial numbers filed off.

I thought the sets were pretty wonderful, at that. The seaplane was sublime.

I bought this for my son after it retired for 30% off at the local independent toy store in my town, which sadly went out if business this year (it outlasted Toys R Us, but couldn’t compete with Amazon). The local Barnes & Noble had the 5885 Triceratops Trapper also on discount. My son had a great birthday that year!

I actually prefer the Dino Theme to Jurassic Park. In general, non-licensed themes are better: Pirates > Pirates of the Caribbean; Space > Star Wars.

I got this set for the exact same reasons!

Was just thinking about this set earlier haha, I was talking with some friends about how I’ve always loved giant LEGO helicopters and this set came up. I loved the Dino theme so much when it came out, and I’ve always thought this set looked awesome. $70 was a little too expensive for me back then though, so unfortunately I never got it. May have to try and see what it’s going for on Bricklink and eBay ;)

By in Australia,

I wish we still got unlicensed dinosaur themes. This one was really cool and had great moulds and builds.
The Adventurers dino island set with the steamer and lorry with trailer transporting a T Rex....I wonder where the inspiration for that came from... was a great set and an updated version of that would be cool.

By in United States,

I really like this theme. The compound is particularly cool.

Why do we have to mess with nature all the time. Just let T-Rex be...

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Dino > Jurassic World. These sets were great, although they were quite expensive for thei day due to the dinosaurs in question. But that's not this theme's fault.

Because we were so busy thinking if we could, we never stopped to think if we should.

By in Germany,

I remember buying this set off ebay at the time Jurassic World hit the cinemas. Then I modded it into a blue colour scheme, including JW stickers and minifigs. These were good times collecting Lego... Did the same with the Triceratops set.

Do-over of Dino Attack, or revamp of the third Adventurer’s wave?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I actually got this one second-hand this year. I slightly preferred it when they did the Dinosaurs in these subdued colours rather than bright reds and greens.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Love that Skycrane-esque helicopter!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Would love to see LEGO Jurassic World do a set like this!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

That's one ugly helicopter. I still like it - personality goes a long way.

Which is good, because that thing is ferociously ugly.

Nice to see the comments-section blowing up about things blowing up. Who needs to see the locations of the posters when "RARARAR GUNNOSAURUS GUN GOES BRRR" speaks so very loudly.

By in United States,

I loved this series. I have most of the sets.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I love this set and the whole theme. Dino was such an underrated theme and I wish it got a wave 2. This set in particular might have been the best outside of the Dino Defense HQ, the helicopter was gigantic in person. Awesome set

An updated version of any Adventurers set, from any subtheme, would be cool.

By in United States,

I bought this off of craigslist back in the day for that T-Rex alone. Now I have 3 or 4 other T-Rexes that this was probably unnecessary. But hey, it was fun while it lasted.

Could it sadly be that they think kids who are always on iPads, internet, etc, don't have as much imagination/respond better to licensed sets? (Admittedly, I probably sound like a hypocrite, since 43242 has been a very fun build...)

By in Poland,

I've been playing GTA V recently and I'm having trouble with a mission with a very similar helicopter lifting train cars.

In fairness, updated versions of Johnny Thunder, Pippin Reed and Doctor Kilroy (and the cursed bones of Sam Sinister) have been stealth-rereleased since TLM.

In further fairness, keep your eyes fixed on the next City Jungle-subtheme.

I want Lord Sam Sinister to come back in full mini-figure form so bad (no half measures or variants!) to complete my revised Adventurers lineup. If you're listening LEGO, I think the top hat piece used for 71038-6 would look awesome on an updated Sam. (without the feather or skull print, but the red band can stay)

Hmm.. I need to go about getting myself a Pippin and Dr. Kilroy. They aren't cheap though.

Or possibly going with a licensed theme means someone else doing a big chunk of marketing for you? Easier to sell thing with a certain logo on when, say, a movie studio has spent millions on making sure people have seen and are talking about that logo

I know. I've been trying to source the updated Kilroy head / hair from the Natural History Museum modular. This fig works well for Pippin (if you replace the hat) https://brickset.com/minifigs/cty1099/safari-tourist-female-dark-green-jacket-dark-red-legs-red-ball-cap-with-reddish-brown-ponytail

Yeah, I have that set for the figure, and the Lion. My canon is that is Pippin's granddaughter not Pippin herself.

By in United States,

Wow, that is a cool Sikorsky S-64 Skycrane they’re using to airlift that T-Rex.

It looks as though that 2012 Dino theme would mesh perfectly with the Jurassic Park sets.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I loved how they used this model as a construction sky crane in The LEGO Movie.
