Review: 76269 Avengers Tower (Part #1)

Posted by ,

Avengers Tower remains the most recognisable setting from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and offers huge potential for a large-scale recreation, populated by as many characters from the films as possible. The striking 76269 Avengers Tower surely delivers in that regard!

A remarkable 31 minifigures are supplied, more than any other set. Beyond the original six Avengers, this selection contains revised versions of Ultron MK1, Vision and Falcon, with multiple characters appearing for the first time. Given their sheer quantity, the minifigures alone warrant their own review.

The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.

Box and Contents

Before discussing the minifigures, I should draw attention to the box. This another example where I think a traditional background would be more dynamic than the black backdrop used across the 18+ range, but I do like how the vehicles and characters are displayed around the tower. Hawkeye and Tony Stark's poses are particularly fun, recreating memorable moments from The Avengers, although Hawkeye was actually jumping from another building in the film.

There are 39 numbered bags inside the box, plus three instruction manuals and two sticker sheets. These are protected in a cardboard sleeve, as expected of large sets nowadays. Of course, fewer stickers and more printed elements would have been ideal, but almost all of these decorations are very specialised, so the decision to use stickers is understandable.

Minifigures

Iron Man marked the beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so it seems appropriate to begin with Tony Stark. This minifigure has appeared twice before and is most notable for the torso, which originates from The Avengers. However, the shirt from Black Sabbath's 1987 tour has been cleverly updated with a LEGO helmet developed for the Exploriens subtheme in 1996.

A near-identical Pepper Potts minifigure has also appeared in two previous sets, albeit with a ponytail hairstyle on those occasions. The black jacket suits Pepper quite well and I think this double-sided head works for the character, despite actually being created for a Pirates of the Caribbean minifigure six years ago. The freckles in particular are effective.

However, I dislike the dark orange hair component. The element used in 76144 Avengers Hulk Helicopter Rescue was better suited to the character, so I am not sure why LEGO has moved away from it lately. Pepper's holographic screen is a welcome accessory though, displaying a burger and a slice of cheese, in reference to Tony's demand for a cheeseburger after returning from imprisonment in Afghanistan.

Tony Stark rarely appears without an Iron Man suit and two are provided here. The damaged Iron Man MK6 is an appealing addition because this suit last appeared in 2013 and appears prominently during the Battle of New York, so I am pleased to see it updated. The battle wear looks superb and corresponds with The Avengers, complete with accurate damage across the faceplate.

Fortunately, a replacement is ready with the Iron Man MK7 armour, which returns from 76248 The Avengers Quinjet, released earlier in 2023. The combination of red, dark red, metallic gold and metallic silver looks excellent and I like this helmet with the opening faceplate, even though its shape is not absolutely perfect for Iron Man's movie appearances.

One minifigure features a trans-light blue head beneath the helmet, while the other includes Tony's double-sided head. As always, the heads-up display looks great, but I think this would have been a good place to introduce a new head for Tony Stark, given the piece has now been featured in 28 sets! The standard trans-light blue repulsor accessories are also included.

Two versions of Captain America are included as well, so you can recreate their meeting and battle from Avengers: Endgame. Again, the torso shared between these minifigures arrived in 76248 The Avengers Quinjet and captures extensive detail. The stitches across the front and back are notable in particular, alongside some metallic silver accents.

Unfortunately, neither minifigure includes dual-moulded legs to represent boots, maintaining an unwelcome trend for Captain America. The heroes' differing headgear is appropriate though, as the time-travelling Captain America does not wear his helmet during this sequence in Avengers: Endgame, while the original character from 2012 does.

The actual helmet element looks splendid, but the head underneath is poor. As usual, the flesh tone appears washed out because it has been printed on a dark colour. LEGO clearly needs to solve this frequent issue, but I think using the same head on both minifigures would have been equally acceptable here. Naturally, each minifigure is equipped with their famous shield.

Thor is another character who appeared in 76248 The Avengers Quinjet earlier this year, but this minifigure's hair piece has been unexpectedly updated. I think the wavy element used on this occasion works well, although the change was not essential, in my opinion. Otherwise, the Asgardian's attire remains the same and his torso looks good, but printed legs would be ideal.

Fortunately, this version of Black Widow does include decorated legs, as well as printed arms. While these are welcome, I find it strange that Black Widow often receives printed arms, but other characters do not. Nevertheless, this minifigure is brilliantly detailed and there was no need for alterations from her prior appearance with the aforementioned Quinjet.

76248 The Avengers Quinjet attracted some criticism because Hawkeye was missing from its minifigure selection. However, the character is available here and this is definitely my favourite iteration of Hawkeye produced to date. This medium nougat hair element is great and I love the intricate straps across the torso, finally improving on the minifigure from 2012. The decision to re-use a generic double-sided head is disappointing though.

Hulk bigfigs were consistently available during the early years of LEGO Marvel, but recently they have become scarcer. This figure follows the example of Thanos from 76192 Avengers Endgame Final Battle, featuring a separate rotating head, as well as the usual shoulder and wrist articulation. A large hair element is thus included too, which looks fantastic, although its clutch power could be better.

The updated bigfig body also includes four studs on the back, while the hands can hold bars, minifigures and small bricks, so there are plenty of connection points available. The moulded muscles across the figure are effective and sand blue is arguably an accurate colour choice for Hulk's torn trousers, even though I prefer the more vibrant dark blue shade used before.

Several allies of the Avengers are included too, although not as many as I had hoped. Although the same minifigure has appeared several times before, Nick Fury is a necessary addition and his black trench coat looks superb, as always. I like the SHIELD insignia and Fury's classic eye patch corresponds with his appearances across the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Dr. Erik Selvig and Dr. Helen Cho, meanwhile, are making their first appearances in LEGO form. Selvig is portrayed by Stellan Skarsgård, so fittingly features the same head as Luthen Rael from 75388 Ambush on Ferrix. The medium blue shirt developed for 21328 Seinfeld also works nicely, so I think the use of existing elements for Erik Selvig makes sense.

A new torso has been created for Dr. Cho, faithfully recreating her medical garb from Avengers: Age of Ultron. This shade of blue looks accurate and the doctor's hairstyle is well-chosen from the available pieces, although I hope the range of shorter hairstyles for female characters will improve. Each minifigure comes with useful accessories, but Dr. Selvig's laptop lacks a sticker for its screen.

After the events of Age of Ultron, the Avengers team grows to include Wanda Maximoff and Vision. This version of Wanda was introduced with 76266 Endgame Final Battle, so her dark red clothing is far from accurate to the character's appearance in Age of Ultron, sadly. In some cases, I can excuse the repetition, but Wanda is sufficiently important that a new design was necessary.

Nevertheless, the torso is highly detailed and I like the fabric component around Wanda's waist, despite their inaccuracies to the second Avengers movie. Vision, by comparison, is absolutely faultless! Surprisingly, the character has not appeared in his normal colours since 2018, when sand green and magenta elements were used. Teal has since been reintroduced, so appears in place of sand green on this occasion.

The updated colours look perfect and this minifigure represents Vision immediately after his creation, so his legs and the lower part of his cape remain transparent. Instead of the normal fabric, the cape is made from flexible plastic and features beautiful decoration, spoilt only by a LEGO trademark on one side. Thankfully, this can be hidden behind Vision's back.

Most of the supplied characters are frequent visitors to Avengers Tower, so Wong seems out of place, especially since there are some notable omissions from the character selection. Even so, this minifigure compares favourably with Wong's appearances in more recent Marvel Cinematic Universe projects and has only appeared a couple of times before.

James Rhodes in casual attire would have been a welcome replacement for Wong. Instead, he wears full War Machine armour. This minifigure debuted in 75216 Iron Man Armoury and looks outstanding, displaying intricate detail across his torso and legs. The metallic silver accents are especially striking, in combination with the predominant pearl dark grey.

Rhodey is equipped with his shoulder-mounted cannon and trans-red repulsor blasts. I would like his red heads-up display to return too, having last appeared in 76153 Avengers Helicarrier, three years ago. Wong does not require such elaborate weaponry, wielding a pair of orange Tao Mandalas and a hot dog, doubtless purchased from a street vendor en route to the tower.

Falcon is unusual among Super Heroes minifigures, as this character has appeared several times before, but the same figure has never been repeated. This version most resembles the minifigure from 76104 The Hulkbuster Smash-Up, particularly because of the brick-built wings, which are decorated with stickers on both sides.

This use of stickers is disappointing and the decision to build Falcon's wings is strange as well. Sam Wilson has taken on the mantle of Captain America and a specialised piece was created for his Collectable Minifigure. Given his return in 2025's Captain America: Brave New World, I assume that element will soon return, in which case it could presumably have been used here as well.

Although the wings leave something to be desired, Sam Wilson's minifigure features plenty of detail. I like this hair component and the metallic accents on Sam's torso are appealing, while his goggles correspond with the onscreen character. However, this is an occasion where dual-moulded arms would have been perfect, as Falcon is usually seen with short sleeves.

Similar to Wong, I find the presence of Wasp odd. On the other hand, the character was part of the original Avengers team in the comics, has only appeared in four sets and this minifigure is new, finally improving upon the figure released in 2018. The helmet is welcome in particular, as the previous Wasp minifigure used a much older piece. The shape of this one is far superior and I like the yellow lenses.

Furthermore, the torso has been updated, but retains the subtle hexagonal pattern across the metallic gold areas of Wasp's armour. These are repeated on her wings, which are made from the same flexible plastic as Vision's cape. While their material is far from ideal, the shape of the wings represents a substantial improvement over the fairy wings worn in 2018.

Wasp comes with an alternative hair piece, but features the same head as Pepper Potts, which serves to highlight the need for an improved variety of female heads. Ant-Man is also included, in nanofigure form. The figure last appeared in 76192 Avengers: Endgame Final Battle and I am pleased to see it available again, although a proper minifigure would have been better still.

Loki is another minifigure returning from 76248 The Avengers Quinjet and is certainly among my favourite Super Heroes minifigures released this year. The golden helmet captures superb moulded detail and Loki's sinister smile is absolutely perfect for the character. Additionally, I like Loki's green cape, which complements the lapels on his robe.

Pearl dark grey is a good colour for the rest of his robes, especially because this shade does convey the sheen of Loki's onscreen garb. The metallic gold details are equally attractive and continue onto the back of the torso, hidden under the cape. However, the minifigure's alternative face is not completely concealed.

The second expression features an Asgardian collar, used to muzzle prisoners. While its slight visibility is frustrating, this design looks splendid and an appropriate hair element is included as well. A pair of handcuffs completes the minifigure, ready for transport back to Asgard, or perhaps a brief escape to the Gobi Desert.

Loki commands an army of Chitauri in The Avengers and four of these alien soldiers are found here, which is a reasonable number to display around the tower. The same minifigure has now appeared in various sets and this is my favourite version of the Chitauri, thanks in particular to the metallic gold highlights on their heads and torsos.

The legs are undecorated though, which is noticeable given the complexity of detail elsewhere on these minifigures. Moreover, they have now appeared several times, so the decorated legs would have been re-used. Despite the potential for improvement, the Chitauri are an excellent addition to the minifigure selection and two are equipped with their advanced weapons.

Ultron MK1 presents an even more serious threat to Avengers Tower, quickly becoming self-aware and confronting the Avengers at their headquarters. The original Ultron MK1 minifigure from 76038 Attack on Avengers Tower was impressive, but this edition improves upon the 2015 design, featuring more realistic damage. However, I prefer the unsettling smile on the original minifigure.

While less personally threatening than Ultron, Alexander Pierce is equally sinister and his evil allegiance is made clear by a sneering smile. The piece was actually designed for René Belloq in 77015 Temple of the Golden Idol, but also appears perfect for Secretary Pierce. Similarly, the striped suit debuted in 76417 Gringotts Wizarding Bank - Collectors' Edition and works well on this occasion too.

Similar to Iron Man and War Machine, Ultron is equipped with a pair of trans-blue 1x1 round plates and 1x1 round bricks, representing repulsors. This minifigure alone is good, but I think Avengers Tower would have been the ideal opportunity to provide a couple of undamaged Iron Legion drones, so their absence is unfortunate.

Alexander Pierce, by contrast, is accompanied by three SHIELD Agents. These characters are dressed in accordance with Avengers: Endgame, sporting accurate tactical vests with pouches for their equipment and SHIELD branding on each side. Their goggles are comically oversized, but they look reasonable when raised on top of the helmets.

Lifting the goggles of the third agent reveals Tony Stark, disguised as seen in the film! Another black hair element is provided for Tony and he comes with the pearl silver briefcase containing the Tesseract. The other agents are equipped with rifles and both feature relatively uncommon heads, which are a nice bonus.

Minifigures representing real people are relatively scarce, outside occasional sportspeople and historical figures. Kevin Feige is therefore a surprising addition to 76269 Avengers Tower and perhaps a controversial one because a new hat, head and torso have been developed for the president of Marvel Studios. After all, other characters could have benefitted from these unique parts.

On the other hand, the minifigure is brilliantly executed. The head bears a definite resemblance to Kevin Feige and the printed cap is bound to prove popular, featuring the Avengers logo. Also, civilians are always a useful presence in Super Heroes sets and Kevin could easily double as a generic character, endangered by the various villains included!

This minifigure comes with a coffee cup and a printed 1x1 quarter circle tile, which represents a taco. The taco has only appeared once before, in 41747 Heartlake Community Kitchen, so I am glad it is available here as well. A spare is also included, as normal for small pieces like this one.

Overall

76269 Avengers Tower aims to be the ultimate Avengers set, containing as many characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe as possible. In sheer quantity, the set certainly succeeds, but I find some of the character choices underwhelming. After all, almost all of the major heroes have appeared many times before and few are improved here. More dual-moulded pieces or printed arms would not have gone amiss.

This set and its minifigure selection shares certain similarities with 76178 Daily Bugle, although the Spider-Man set contains many more new and long-awaited characters. Instead, I find the minifigures available here more akin to those in 10188 Death Star and 75159 Death Star, as much of the main cast is included, but there is relatively little to excite more seasoned Marvel Super Heroes collectors.

Personally, I think the real strength of this set lies in Avengers Tower itself and the second part of our review, focusing on the tower, is available here.

I would have loved to see a minifigure of Bruce Banner in the set.

The reason why Wasp is here is because she was part of the original avengers lineup from the debut comic. It was stated in a designer interview.
Otherwise, this minifigure lineup is the best in marvel history. Particularly vision, ultron, loki, iron man mk6,hawkeye, falcon, and hulk

Wow, nice review. 31 minifigs is a lot for one set.

Also, for the missing characters... ultron,ant-man(minifigure form), and the iron legion have a pretty good knockoff for 1 dollar on brickpanda.com. Spider-Man, dr strange, bruce banner, and vulture aren't too hard too get. Agent Coulson, maria hill, and happy hogan can be made out of existing parts. And for stan Lee, it's harder to get rights for deceased people.( rip by the way)
Sorry for the long comment by the way.

As large as the minifigure line-up is, it seems a missed opportunity to truly cement this as the ultimate MCU set. Rare and never-before-seen igures such as Agent Coulson from first The Avengers film, Maria Hill from the first 2 Avengers films, Agent Sitwell and Agent Rumlow/ Crossbones in SHIELD uniform from Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Endgame come to mind as characters from this location that are unlikely to appear elsewhere. I'm glad that Alexander Pierce appears at least.

Also, fun civilian variants such as Bruce Banner in a lab coat for the Ultron creation scene, Rhodey and Thor (with a ponytail) in their party clothes would have been nice to see and appropriate for an 18+ set. The current set-up is inclined towards action, but misses a definitive Ultimate Ultron, or at the minimum 2x members of the Iron Legion allow for more villain cannon fodder. The number of Chitauri included is nice though.

I think the Minifigure selection is pretty perfect. As a diehard Scarlet Witch fan, I'm not too bothered by an Endgame repeat instead of a new Age of Ultron version. I would've loved to see a new Wanda, but I think this one is perfect and I'm just happy to get more figures.

I think the biggest omission is Quicksilver, since he's only been made once before and was part of a major scene in Avengers Tower. With Wanda and Vision included, leaving Quicksilver out doesn't make any sense to me.

Maria Hill could've been included, made out of existing parts. I think Wong is a bit of a waste since he never visited Avengers Tower and he could've been replaced by a repeated Bruce Banner since we've never gotten all 6 original Avengers as Minifigures in a single set. Iron Legion drones and a proper Mark 2 Ultron would've been good as well but hopefully we see them in future Infinity Saga sets!

Vision feels like the only fig to get excited about. The others we've had many times before (it seems in some cases literally the same figure as before) and the Daily Bugle figure set was far more exciting.

Disappointing line-up compared to the Daily Bugle that came with a bunch of new and desirable characters.

I appreciate you need to include the Avengers with the Angers tower... but would have been nice to see some newness or use it as an opportunity to create a version of the character that hasn't appeared before.

The stickersheet suggests that Vita Rush is owned and/or produced by Pym Laboratories. That genie is not going back into its bottle any time soon.

The light-on-dark printing still isn't up to code, but it seems... okay-ish, here? We've seen much, MUCH worse. I'm still not breaking out the streamers and the party-hats, but fingers crossed, maybe it's an upward trend!

I may be in the minority here, but I am actually glad that so many of the figures appear elsewhere. I recognize that people who buy the set are looking for a premium experience, but the price for this and the daily bugle are so far out of my range that I can't afford to get them. I have the most recent Quinjet and the old 2018 Wasp, so of the main characters that I collect, I really would only want the battle damaged Iron Man, whereas with the Daily Bugle set, I want about 5 of those exclusive figures that I won't be able to get without the extortionate secondary market prices.

Hopefully with the introduction of a Kevin Feige minifigure a SW set in the future will include a Kathleen Kennedy minifigure.

Is this the first set to include a teal minifig head (albeit printed)?
If so we can finally make a real monofig that us not reliant on unofficial parts the have somehow been sourced in dubious ways from a LEGO factory (like those from various monofig sellers online).

Also, I didn't know this was a Monty Python's Flying Circus set. But apparently it is, since it contains pepperpots ;-)

Awesome! I had just watched Tiago's video review in YouTube. It's a pretty good model, nice details and the many many Easter eggs for fans. I love the overall look of the building and it's great that it's compatible with the modular sets. I only question the inclusion of and the quality of the minifigs.

Regardless, this head perfectly portrays an Evangeline Lilly character, as she does in fact have brown eyebrows and freckles.

So many blown opportunities. It’s difficult to read the review because at almost every turn you voice so many of my inner frustrations with phrases like “and yet the” “but the” “sadly the” introducing some letdown regarding what should be pure joy over a set like this carrying a gigantic price tag.

It’s the letdown to much of that (sorry…it just isn’t that great a minifigure line-up) and the cut corners and the inflated price that puts me in the position of steeling myself to pass on the set and maybe getting it if it goes 30-40% off and I don’t miss out but if I do not then not really worrying about it.

Which shouldn’t happen. Something like this should make me stay awake at night thinking about how much I want it.

By in Belgium,

That makes me wonder... who decides which minifigures are in a set and how they are produced. Is it the set designer? Lead designer for the theme? Character designer?
Financial department?

Imagine designing a great set, only to have it 'diminished' by the figure selection.

Anyway, looking forward to part 2: revenge of the tower.

Then having a bunch more would've helped since if I remember, wasn't it the OG 4 Avengers who went to the shawarma place? So one for each of them on a table somewhere would've been more obvious.

To be fair you can also spill into the argument on if Jack Kirby or Steve Ditko would also be deserving (or maybe even more-so) to have a minifigure as well.

I am not sure who controls rights to Stan Lee's likeness, if that falls with his family or if since he's dead anybody can use it. Did he ever trademark his name (Stanley Lieber was his birth name if I remember right), maybe his family has some control over the famous Stan Lee name that prevents it from being licensed for a LEGO set.

Either way though it still feels weird having Kevin Feige here. It would be like if the Disney 100 tribute had Bob Iger instead of Walt Disney. Or if the UCS Venator just had Dave Filoni and Jon Faverau in it. There are certainly more famous people known with the Marvel brand than Kevin is, and if Stan Lee was off the table I'd return back to the idea of Ditko or Kirby being worth a tribute.

Looks like an awesome collection of figures to me--even though I'm already counting up the ones I could bear to sell in order to offset some of the cost of this necessarily expensive set. And really, I ought to get the Daily Bugle set as well...oh, well. I can do without new clothes or a car for a while to make up for indulging my hobby.

While I think it’s weird in general, I don’t think it’s that weird in the sense that he is pretty responsible for this version of marvel, and frankly most of the marvel that is popular right now.
Still should have been an actual movie character though.

Very, very well put.

Also, great review.

The poor GWP and the mediocre minifigs have altered my intention to buy this on release, and placed me solidly astride the proverbial fence. An uncomfortable place to be, for sure.

This is looking more like a next-year/on-sale purchase.

While I think it’s weird in general, I don’t think it’s that weird in the sense that he is pretty responsible for this version of marvel, and frankly most of the marvel that is popular right now.
Still should have been an actual movie character though. "

But Stan Lee was actually in the movies plenty of times, in fact he even appeared in the Avengers Tower in Age of Ultron as a Veteran at a party.

Overall pretty happen with the minifigs. I am really confused about Wong in there - have had a few of his figure recently and was never really in these scenes with the tower. I would have gone for another version of the ancient one. We've only had her once before and yes while she wasn't at the tower was seen to be actively battling in the battle for New York so would fit better.
Would also have liked a minifig Bruce Banner, and don't really personally need two nigh identical Captain Americas just to recreate one scene

I always thought CTY0843 could pass for a George Lucas mining.

So glad the selection here isn't too spectacular. Seems counterintuitive, but the way disposable income is going at the moment I couldn't afford this anyway. And now I'm happy I don't have to worry about it.

The Daily Bugle set had far more interesting characters in it. And I still don't have that.

Maybe the set review will change my mind.

Wait, there are other dc characters than batman and the joker? "

Of course, there're Clayface, Man-Bat, Killer Croc, Mr. Freeze. The Riddler, Scarecrow, Two-Face..."

Lego seems to have forgotten that.

The amount of unprinted legs in this set is disgraceful.

Only for a pretty darn young Lucas, so it would only work in an OT set.

Normally I'd say you're totally right, but here it's not bad.
11 figs have leg printing and examining the others without, their character look/style, except Thor and both Caps, don't need any leg print that makes them any better.
Thor and the Cap's, yes needed some dual molding, but the others not so much.

Most of the my opinions have already been said, but I want agree how disappointing the lack of dual molding for Cap is. It's a very simple way to reuse a figure, and still make them interesting. It's even more notable since they include two. The lack of Ultrons, Quicksilver, Rumlow and Coulson is also pretty disappointing since we have a wasted character slot with Wong. Definitely not a set that I love, but I doubt I would be able to afford it anyway.

I tell you what, that picture in the article with Avengers Tower against a bright blue sky is awesome.
