On this American Independence Day, we are reflecting on the enduring values of freedom and democracy. We are also thinking about the brave Ukrainian people. Both in Europe and the United States, We must commit to supporting their struggle for liberty. Last night, Ambassador Gitenstein was honored to welcome many friends, alongside Ambassador Adler and Ambassador Smith, to our #4thJuly reception. On American Independence Day, we celebrate independence, liberty, and freedom. We also rededicate ourselves to the essential work of strengthening our democracy. We were grateful to celebrate the values that unite us on both sides of the Atlantic.

Ambassador Gitenstein joined the American Chamber of Commerce to the European Union (AmCham EU) Gala to celebrate the strong partnership between the U.S. and EU, and our shared values in support of the transatlantic relationship.

Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco traveled to Brussels last week to lead the U.S. delegation at the 🇺🇸 🇪🇺 Justice and Home Affairs Ministerial and reaffirm the Justice Department’s commitment to a critical alliance that combats shared risks to global security. The Ministerial brings together leadership from the Justice and Home Affairs Ministries of the European Union and the U.S. Departments of Justice and Homeland Security to strengthen transatlantic collaboration. The Ministers focused on addressing persistent threats to our nations, including organized crime, terrorism, cybercrime, and foreign malign influence — especially by nation-states seeking to sow discord and further their autocratic agendas amid this year’s global elections, when over four billion people are expected to vote. They also discussed international law enforcement collaboration to disrupt trafficking of cocaine and #syntheticdrugs, particularly fentanyl, as well as #AI — including AI’s potential to enhance law enforcement operations and the risk that it could supercharge criminal activity. During the Ministerial, the officials reaffirmed their resolute support for Ukraine and unwavering resolve to hold Russia accountable for war crimes, atrocities, and the crime of aggression. They reiterated the need for sustained coordination between the U.S. and EU to deprive the Russian war machine of funding and supplies — with the Deputy AG underscoring the successful efforts of the Department’s Disruptive Technology Strike Force and Task Force #KleptoCapture to enforce export controls and the sweeping sanctions imposed on Russia for its unprovoked aggression against Ukraine. The officials also emphasized their commitment to supporting anti-corruption efforts in #Ukraine. The science is clear – as shown in the climate stripes – that our planet is warming at an unprecedented rate. We are already experiencing the consequences globally. How climate hazards will affect us – our communities, our economies, and our natural resources – will depend on our collective ability to limit temperature increase to 1.5°C. In addition to limiting temperatures, we must address the impacts that are already occurring. President Biden’s Emergency Plan for Adaptation and Resilience (PREPARE) will help improve lives and jobs, support sustainable and healthy communities and ecosystems, reduce the negative impacts of climate disasters, and reduce the need for humanitarian aid. #ShowYourStripes

The first U.S.-EU Climate and Security Dialogue took place in Brussels last week. The climate crisis affects not just our environment, but global peace, security, migration, and defense. The U.S. and EU are working together to tackle these complex challenges. At the dialogue, representatives from the U.S. Department of State, the United States Department of Defense, the National Security Council, The White House, and USAID met with their counterparts within the European Commission services, the European External Action Service (EEAS), and the European Defence Agency (EDA) to discuss the increasing challenges posed by climate change and environmental degradation to peace, security and defence.
