About us

Next Mobility and its 2 founders, Nicolas Verstraete and André Simonart, wanted to bring an angle that is often neglected in the world of consultancy: the operational and the human. Given that the majority of ambitious projects remain at the stage of powerpoints and then put back in the drawers, Next Mobility puts in place realistic and operable strategies with in the background the processes simplification and the accompaniment of the human in the change and the acquisition of new habits.

🌿 Is Hydrogen THE Solution for the Future of Mobility? 🌿 More than 100 scientists wrote an open letter in the context of the Paris 2024 - Comité d'organisation des Jeux Olympiques et Paralympiques de 2024 to say why it is not a good message to use hydrogen cars as a solution against climate change. 🔍 Hydrogen could be part of a broader solution depending on how it’s produced and utilized: 📌 Usage and Production: Hydrogen acts as an energy vector, transferring energy across space and time. Various methods to produce hydrogen are commonly classified by colour (e.g., green hydrogen, grey hydrogen). 🔋 Efficiency and Renewable Energy: Green hydrogen (produced using renewable electricity) is the only immaculate method. However, producing hydrogen via renewable electricity is less efficient compared to storing that electricity directly in vehicle batteries. 🚛 Application in Mobility: Renewable hydrogen is a viable option for energy-intensive transportation like long-distance trucks, coaches, and public buses but should first replace the grey hydrogen used in the industry. 🧬 Key Points from the Scientists' Open Letter 📉 Hydrogen vs. Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs): Hydrogen vehicles, including the Toyota Mirai, are not aligned with net-zero goals. BEVs are identified as the most effective way to decarbonize passenger transport. 💸 Cost and Infrastructure: Green hydrogen vehicles need three times more renewable electricity than BEVs, making them more expensive and less efficient. The high cost and limited infrastructure for hydrogen refuelling are significant barriers. 🌍 Environmental Impact: Most hydrogen today is produced from fossil fuels, which emit substantial CO2. Switching the official fleet of the 2024 Olympics from hydrogen vehicles to BEVs is recommended to better align with net-zero goals. 🚫 Failed Trials and Market Decline: Hydrogen vehicle trials have failed in several countries due to cost and infrastructure issues. BEVs are vastly more prevalent and practical for consumer use, with a growing support infrastructure. 🎯 Conclusion Hydrogen can contribute to the future of mobility but isn't the sole solution. BEVs are currently more efficient and aligned with environmental goals. The future likely holds a mix of technologies, with hydrogen playing a specific role in energy-intensive applications. Improving mobility & multimodality for companies | 🚙 🅿️ 🚲 🚌 🛴 🛵 🚈

🚀 Last Friday, André Simonart and I had the pleasure to share our vision of mobility in 2030 invited by Bart de Hoog at Dragintra's 25th birthday celebration! 🎉 We began our presentation by looking back at the changes in fleet management from 2010, driven by a new component; « CO2 » with CO2 targets and CO2-based taxes, that transformed significantly the car industry in Europe. 🚗🌍 Next, we dived into current commuting trends. The car still dominates in commuting choices but decreased over the last decade while active mobility is on the rise. The sweet spot for change lies between 5 and 50km, considering the dynamic nature of our daily mobility. 🚶♂️🚴♀️ The mobility budget is a perfect example of tools enabling this shift. It allows us to combine a car AND various alternatives in regard of an individual conscious choice combining environmental impact, time spent, and additional benefits during commuting like comfort, exercising, financial savings or social connections. 🌱💰 We're witnessing these changes primarily in urban and peri-urban areas with the emergence of mobility hubs, equally shared spaces, and zero-emission zones. 🏙️♻️ Technological and behavioural changes are driving the Avoid-Shift-Improve principle: 1️⃣ Avoid: Increased homeworking and the ability to work from anywhere 🏡💻 2️⃣ Shift: Mobility as a Service (MaaS) and pay-as-you-go models make transitions between modes smoother, encouraging short-distance mobility shifts 🚉🛴 3️⃣ Improve: Electrification of vehicles including bikes ⚡🚗 Autonomous vehicles also play a part in this improvement. For efficiency, they need to be shared—both the rides and the vehicles. This approach is already implemented by Ruter As in Norway, as discussed at last Thursday's FOD Mobiliteit en Vervoer / SPF Mobilité et Transports event, and is spreading across the US and Asia 🤖🚘 where they did 65 million km last year. While cars will remain important, their role will evolve towards usage-based models rather than ownership. 🚗💡 For companies, this means increasingly complex mobility packages requiring support from external players like Dragintra or Next Mobility | Mobility Budget, Mobility Management, Mobility Operations to manage day-to-day operations. 🏢🔧 Success in implementation hinges on careful planning, streamlined operational processes, and effective coaching. Our experience shows that even with the best apps, companies need optimized operations and employees need human interaction and clear explanations. 👥📈 We were joined by Erik Swerts, CEO of Alphabet Belgium, and Eddy Haesendonck, CEO of Hedin Automotive Belgium Luxembourg. Our visions were remarkably aligned, pointing towards a transformative future for mobility! 🚀🌐 #Mobility2030 #SustainableTransport #FleetManagement #UrbanMobility #Technology #Innovation #Dragintra #NextMobility #FutureOfTransport #AutonomousVehicles #SharedMobility #MobilityBudget

🌟 Insights from the monitoring done by the RSZ - ONSS 🌟 🚗🌿 Electric Company Cars on the Rise 🌿🚗 Between early 2022 and the end of 2023, the number of electric company cars in Belgium has nearly quintupled. According to the National Social Security Office (RSZ - ONSS), this shift marks a significant move towards a greener fleet. 🔋 Key Highlights: 📉 Decline of Diesel: 1️⃣ By the end of 2023, Belgium had 568,187 company cars, a 10.07% increase since 2022. 2️⃣ The share of conventional combustion engines dropped to 59.96% from 82.32% in two years. 3️⃣ Diesel cars saw a notable decline, from 72% to 62%, while gasoline engines increased. 🔄 Transition to Hybrid and Electric: 1️⃣ In Q4 2023, over 80% of new company cars were electric: 44.53% hybrids and 37.26% fully electric. 2️⃣ New registrations of combustion engines fell to 18.22%. 3️⃣ Hybrid cars in the fleet rose from 15.14% to 27.89%, and fully electric cars from 2.54% to 12.15% by the end of 2023. 4️⃣ Hybrid car share remains high despite the tax evolution increasing costs for companies and drivers. 💼 Mobility Budget Growth: 1️⃣ The total mobility budget has more than doubled in two years, reaching nearly 72 million euros. Is it a lot? No, it is 1155 employers offering the mobility budget (vs 58 460 offering a company car) and 10.250 employees choosing the mobility budget (vs. 558.404 choosing a company car). 2️⃣ Despite this growth, a majority of workers (over 90%) do not allocate their budget to cars. 3️⃣ Only 8% opt for an "environmentally friendly vehicle." 4️⃣ Around 80% dedicate 80% of their budget to sustainable transport and housing expenses. 5️⃣ 60% choose to receive the remaining budget (approximately 20%) in cash. 🌍 Impact on CO2 Emissions: 1️⃣ Average CO2 emissions per vehicle decreased from 120 to 100 g/km (-16.67%). 2️⃣ Overall CO2 emissions for the fleet dropped from 61.78 to 56.62 tonnes/km, even with a 10.07% increase in the number of company cars. 💡 Takeaway: The ONSS figures highlight a clear trend towards greener company cars in Belgium. The significant increase in electric and hybrid vehicles, combined with the decline in diesel and overall CO2 emissions, showcases the country’s commitment to sustainability. The mobility budget growth indicates an evolving approach to transportation, with a focus on sustainable options and reduced environmental impact. 🚀 Let's continue to drive towards a sustainable future! 🌍✨ André Simonart Benoît Loosveld François de Troostembergh Next Mobility | Mobility Budget, Mobility Management, Mobility Operations #Sustainability #GreenMobility #ElectricVehicles #HybridCars #CO2Reduction #Belgium #MobilityBudget #FutureOfTransport

🚗💬 How can you get to work without a car in Wallonia? 🚴♂️🚶♀️ Last Friday, Gil Durand and Benoît July from Le Soir interviewed the experts: André Simonart and Diego Eggermont. Here is what they suggest to reduce car dependency and promote sustainable alternatives. 📉 CO2 Emissions: Road transport accounts for 25% of greenhouse gas emissions in Wallonia. Goal: reduce CO2 emissions by 47% by 2030. 🌍 🗣️ André Simonart: “The key is support. You’re not going to convince someone to give up their car just by writing a report.” 💼🔑 🚌 Public Transport: Increase the modal share to 25% by 2030 (compared to 13% in 2017). TEC receives an annual allocation of one billion euros to improve service and green the fleet. 🚄 🗣️ André Simonart: “It's important to question the automatic choice of the car for every trip and consider alternatives like trains, shared cars, or cycling.” 🗣️ Diego Eggermont: “ There is no single mode of transport that can replace the car for everything. For some people, what they need is a basket of solutions that allows them, depending on the moment or in combination, to replace the car.” 🚶♂️🚲 🚴♀️ Cycling: Quintuple the use of bicycles by 2030. Currently, only 2.4% of Walloons cycle to work, compared to 20% in Flanders. 🔧 🗣️ André Simonart: "Get people on a bike, with a reasonable target, a few days a year when the weather's good, during holiday periods and with a suitable itinerary... if it works, then the momentum is there. Cycling quickly becomes addictive... Companies also need to do their bit, such as providing secure parking, showers, etc." 👥 Carpooling: Initiatives like those of Laetitia Van Calsteren in Nivelles show that carpooling can be a viable solution with workshops and working groups to test interest. 🚗💬 🗣️ André Simonart: “The car is undeniably part of mobility, but that doesn't mean it has to be “all about the car”. There's always that brake of it's the car ‘or’; but in fact, the solution is the car ‘and’. We always expect politicians to do things - and that's legitimate - but when something is available, like the mobility budget, we have to use it." 🚗 Car Sharing can help reduce car usage without eliminating it entirely, and car sharing, initially designed for big cities, is now thriving in smaller urban centres. 🗣️ Frédéric Van Malleghem: "It may seem paradoxical, but our service is developing very well in small towns of between 15,000 and 30,000 inhabitants. Larger towns like Liège and Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve were slow to take off, but are now booming." In conclusion, alternatives exist, but adoption remains a challenge. To succeed, support in this transition from citizens, companies and organisations is essential. 🌿🚀 I'll come back next week with the latest report from FOD Mobiliteit en Vervoer / SPF Mobilité et Transports regarding commutes. Like and follow to see it. #Mobility #Wallonia #Environment #SustainableTransport #Carpooling #Cycling
