🚨A new NDC ASPECTS paper led by Panagiotis Fragkos examines the extent to which Nationally Determined Contributions and Long-Term Targets can contribute to achieving ambitious climate goals. The study analyzes various sectors including buildings, transportation, electricity generation, and industry to provide insights into the limitations of existing policies and the potential of enhanced commitments to drive transformative changes in a global scale. The effectiveness of these policies varies across different sectors, highlighting the challenges that need to be addressed for achieving the required emission reduction targets in the medium- and long-term. EU H2020 - Assessing Sectoral Perspectives on Climate Transitions to support the Global Stocktake and subsequent NDCs
About us
NDC ASPECTS will provide inputs to the GST and support the potential and gender-responsive revision of existing NDCs, as well as the development of new NDCs for the post-2030 period. The project will particularly focus on four sectoral systems that are highly relevant in terms of the greenhouse gas emissions they produce yet have thus far made only limited progress in decarbonization. These sectors are transport and mobility (land-based transport and international aviation & shipping), emission-intensive industries, buildings, and agriculture, forestry, and land-use, including their supply by and interaction with the energy conversion sector. For each of those sectors, NDC ASPECTS will undertake “Sectoral Conversations” to co-create gender-responsive, evidence-based narratives with sectoral experts and stakeholders, drawing on the consortium’s extensive networks. These narratives will then be translated into global pathways informing the GST as well as national pathways for strategically selected countries for each of the four sectors. As an input to the Sectoral Conversations, the project will systematically assess transformation challenges and opportunities (related to societal welfare and care, public and market economy, political and institutional configurations, societal gender and nature relationships, technology innovation and diffusion, as well as capacity and awareness), taking into account experiences with the implementation of the first round of NDCs as well as model-based quantitative analyses. Additionally, NDC ASPECTS will identify ways and means to improve international governance to enable and facilitate sectoral transformations towards climate neutrality and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

An NDC ASPECTS team guided by Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy has released a report on the sectoral conversations approach which guided our project. The central aim of the study is to assess how and to what extent the sectoral conversation approach has fostered dialogue and learning among researchers and between researchers and stakeholders. For that aim two strands of analysis are proposed. The first reflects on the evolution of the sectoral conversations that were undertaken along the whole project duration. The second strand of analysis focuses on the structure of the academic research tasks and traces the interactions that were promoted across them. Based on the results, lessons are extracted that offer guidance about central aspects that should be taken into account in order to promote the effective integration of science in global sustainability governance. IDDRI and the Deep Decarbonization Pathways initiative are supporting for several years a higher visibility of this question in the international climate agenda and an organisation of the dialogue informed by national and sectoral transition analyses, including shippers and industrial development and trade policy makers. Our analysis shows that: 1. Current objectives and measures in Nationally Determined Contributions related to the sustainable transition of the mobility of goods and materials are largely overlooked and very limited compared to measures for the transition of the mobility of people. 2. Most freight-related targeted transformations are focused on the development of low-carbon fuels and vehicles, such as advanced biofuels or low-carbon electricity and the reduction of vehicle fuel consumption. While this shift away from fossil fuel use in freight transport is necessary, it is not a silver bullet. 3. Such energy-centered approach often neglects important options for a sustainable transition. The development of infrastructures and incentives for rail, waterways, and coastal logistics is for example critical to avoid a path dependency towards road logistics and to reduce the transition pressure on the energy system. The shift in industrial and consumption systems towards less resource-intensive, circular and local economies is also critical to continue develop while moderating the transport demand and kilometers travelled. This was therefore natural to co-initiate the 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗮𝗹, 𝗟𝗼𝘄-𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻, 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 with other international organizations committed to the sustainable transition of freight transport and logistics. We are thrilled to announce that the Manifesto for intermodal, low-carbon, efficient and resilient freight transport and logistics was launched today at the first United Nations Global Supply Chain Forum organised by United Nations Trade and Development and the Government of Barbados from 21 – 24 May 2024. Read and sign on to the manifesto: https://lnkd.in/exn-XX3J #TransformingFreightTransport - what does it take? Governments and businesses need to prioritise systems that efficiently and resiliently combine low-carbon services from the first to the last mile, be that local or intercontinental. Urgent actions are needed to transition to zero emission fuels and renewable energy, optimising logistics systems and creating local and circular value chains. Why do we need this transformation? In a world of interconnected challenges, our economies and societies must transform to remain competitive, equitable and resilient, while keeping global warming to 1.5ºC. Accelerating the transformation of freight transport and logistics is among the most impactful steps the global community can take to enable overall positive socio-economic transformations by mid-century. SLOCAT Partnership on Sustainable, Low Carbon Transport and Kuehne Foundation Climate Action, together with CONCITO, IDDRI, International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF), Smart Freight Centre, UIC - International union of railways #UICrail and World Resources Institute have co-initiated this manifesto. So far, we have already gathered support from 30+ multi-stakeholder organisations. Join us and be part of the change! #freight #logistics #transport #UNSupplyChain

𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗗𝗮𝘆! 🌍🌿 Today is Earth Day, an annual event aiming to raise awareness about environmental protection, in dozens of countries across the globe. The current environmental crisis is mostly caused by climate change and biodiversity loss, while also having other aspects. Unfortunately, the rapid economic development of the industrial age and onward, resulted in the significant degradation of the natural environment. Hence, the great challenge of our time is to improve the standard of living for humanity, without undermining the planet. Sustainable development is a commonly used term, without always being accompanied by the appropriate measures to accomplish it. Personally, I have the honor to participate in research projects such as DIAMOND, NDC ASPECTS and IAM COMPACT, which aim to study and formulate effective climate policies, by utilizing integrated assessment models. Moreover, the energy transition is an ambitious goal, that can be achieved by implementing the correct policies. In the photo below, we can see Earth from space, as it was captured by the Apollo 17 crew. By contemplating this image, we may appreciate our planet more deeply, and learn to cherish it as we should! #climatechange #sustainability #earthday #linkedin
