Tonja is a wife, mother and grandmother and a professional educator with 18 years of classroom teaching experience. She is the conservative Republican nominee for Williamson Country School Board District 11. She graduated from Dordt University with a Bachelor Degree of Arts and then earned a multiple-subject teaching credential from California State University, Long Beach. Tonja's three children have all graduated from Williamson County schools and now she is focused on the next generation. In addition to her love and passion for teaching, Tonja has enjoyed seeing as a leader in her church and community for many years. Since 2017, she has served as the Charter Representative on the American Heritage Girls board for Troop #4031. She believes the strength of a community is created when family values are lifted up and when citizens are actively involved in their society.

  • Parents' Rights Parents have a fundamental right to make decisions concerning the upbringing, education and health care of their children. They have the right to raise their children in accordance with their family values- without interference from the government. As your school board member, I will work to set policy that upholds the rights of parents and keeps our schools focused on learning and teaching the skills children will need to succeed in our ever-changing world.
  • School Safety No child should ever be afraid of going to school because they fear for their safety. Students cannot learn and teachers cannot teach in an unsafe environment. I support having law enforcement officers assigned to each campus. Threats of violence do not solely come from outside our schools. They can spring up within our schools and our classrooms. We must have a comprehensive discipline policy that holds students accountable for improper behavior and gives teachers the authority to enforce those limits.
  • Quality Curriculum As a teacher, I have created my own curriculum, and written many lesson plans during 18 years of teaching. I will be the parent's voice to see that our district selects an exceptional curriculum that helps our students excel and enables them to be competitive in the local and global marketplaces. The overall goal of public education is to teach the mastery of basic like reading, writing, and math and then teach student show to think critically. The proper selection of curriculum, supplemental materials, and activities plays a huge part in the educational rigor, student's critical thinking and the overall quality of education.

I am personally passionate about quality curricula and parents' rights and making sure our students have a safe and healthy environment in which to learn. I believe teachers are the backbone of our schools and we should create policy that provide incentives to attract and retain quality teachers and provide them with a living wage.

The school board creates the vision and mission statement of the WCS system. It reviews and creates policy based on district needs and state law, it approves the yearly school budget for the county, and recruites, interviews and select the superintendent when needed. My most important role is to represent the interests of my constituents in these areas and advocate for the best educational experience for WCS students.

The first historical event that I remember was watching the moon landing on our black and white television. I was 5 years old.
