I grew up in Orange Mound, one of the first African American neighborhoods in the United States to be built by African Americans. Growing up in Orange Mound was very challenging. Luckily, my mom kept focused and out of the streets. I attended Melrose High School and played football under Coach Tim Thompson. After graduating from Melrose High, I attended Texas Southern University on a football scholarship. n 2016, the entrepreneurial spirit took hold of me, and I launched Porter Computer Solutions, my own computer company. I was driven by a vision to ensure families in every underserved neighborhood of Memphis could have a working computer in their homes. Starting this business allowed me to assist others with their technology needs.

Once I started teaching computer classes, I decided to get involved in community work. By joining organizations like Inward Journey, I realized how overcoming trauma can positively shape personal and community development. Furthermore, I graduated from the 2019 Leadership Memphis Fast Track program, which equipped me with the tools and knowledge to drive meaningful change in our communities. My dedication to education extended to teaching literacy skills and computer classes throughout the city. Today, I take great pride in my active role on the Tennessee Higher Education Prison Initiative (THEI) board, where I advocate for providing incarcerated individuals with the opportunity to pursue associate and bachelor’s degrees.

  • Commitment to Educational Excellence: As a board member I plan to diagnose and address gaps in learning through enhanced diagnostic assessments. I propose targeted interventions for students who are underperforming, including after-school tutoring programs, summer learning opportunities, and specialized support for subjects like math and reading. I want to emphasize the importance of high expectations and rigorous standards for all students to ensure they achieve their fullest potential.
  • I want to improve mental health resources: Propose the implementation or expansion of on-site mental health services, including hiring more school counselors and psychologists to ensure students have access to professional support. Advocate for the integration of mental health education into the school curriculum to raise awareness and reduce stigma, empowering students to seek help when needed. Plan regular workshops and seminars for students, parents, and staff on topics such as stress management, emotional resilience, and healthy coping mechanisms. Strengthening Security Measures: Call for a comprehensive review and upgrade of physical security measures in schools, such as improved lighting, secure entrances, and surveillance systems.
  • I will commit to establishing or strengthening advisory councils that include parents, teachers, and students to provide input on school policies and decisions. These councils can serve as a critical link between the school board and the community, ensuring that diverse perspectives are considered in decision-making. Propose regular town hall meetings where community members can express their concerns, provide feedback, and suggest improvements. These meetings should be scheduled at convenient times to maximize participation. Outline Plans for Regular Community Meetings: Schedule consistent and predictable community forums and workshops throughout the school year.

Equity in Education: I am passionate about policies aimed at ensuring equity in educational opportunities for all students, regardless of their background, socioeconomic status, or location. This includes addressing disparities in school funding, access to advanced coursework, and educational resources. Implementing policies that support equitable resources and opportunities can help level the playing field and ensure that every student has the chance to succeed.
Teacher Support and Professional Development:
Teachers are the cornerstone of the educational system, and policies that support their continuous professional development and well-being are crucial.
Mental health is increasingly recognized as a critical component.

An elected official best characteristic is listening to the constitutes and learning how to connect the dots to get things done.

They have too willing to be make person sacrifices to for the people that they represent. They have to bend to the will of the people.

A legacy that anything is possible when you learn how to achieve it.

Johnathan Livingston Seagull

To set the vision for the school district and to create a better relationship with the community. To be the voice of the children that they represent in that district.

Mental health is increasingly recognized as a critical component of student success. I am committed to promoting policies that integrate robust mental health services into schools, including access to counselors and mental health professionals, and programs that educate students and staff about mental health.

Not all students will go on to college, nor should they need to for successful careers. Enhancing vocational and technical education can provide valuable skills and open pathways to lucrative and fulfilling jobs. I support policies that expand and modernize vocational training opportunities to meet current and future workforce demands.
Teachers are the cornerstone of the educational system, and policies that support their continuous professional development and well-being are crucial. I believe in advocating for better pay, improved working conditions, and comprehensive professional development programs that help teachers stay at the forefront of educational research and pedagogy.
