This #NAIDOC week, proud Nywaigi man and Bupa dentist, Niels Kirsten, is keeping the fire burning for the next generation of indigenous healthcare workers. Niels says that he was always drawn to a career in health but the path for him wasn’t clear cut. “I grew up in Townsville in a blended household of 18 kids, mum had 10 and dad had eight. When my parents separated, mum had the 10 of us in a four-bedroom home and we did it pretty tough,” Niels said. “I think for most Indigenous youth these days, a healthcare career may seem like it's out of reach for people from certain backgrounds who don't have the academic start.” After picking pineapples and a job at the local meatworks, Niels took an educational pathway to nursing and then dentistry. “It’s never too late to pursue a different pathway, but I also think those pathways need to be more visible for those who may not think it's possible.” One person Niels has already been able to support is his own brother, Pharon Kirsten, who made the switch from electrician to dentist and is also now working with us. “NAIDOC week for me is about recognising and acknowledging my background. Sometimes I get so busy in my everyday work and career that I often forget where I come from. Taking a step back and acknowledging my grassroots and where I’m from is very important to me,” Niels said. When it comes to First Nations culture and heritage, Niels has just one ask for the wider community. Bupa Dental Care Australia Find out what it is: https://lnkd.in/gzMKbxkx

Rachael Connolly started her first role at Bupa Dental 20 years ago as a dental assistant and has gone on to make the most of every opportunity.   Through upskilling, and challenging herself, she is now a Practice Development Manager.   “Many companies promote career growth, but Bupa provides both the opportunity and the necessary training for anyone looking to take the next step in their development,” she says.   “Upskilling has always come naturally to me. I am always looking for new ways to challenge myself and keep things interesting.   “We are a healthcare industry, and our patients are the reason we do what we do.   “I enjoy that no two days are the same, no two treatments are the same, and no two mouths are the same. Patients often come in anxious and nervous about their treatment, and it is incredibly fulfilling to see them leave happy and relieved." Learn more about roles within Bupa: https://lnkd.in/gsYGYZgn

There are few industries left untouched by AI and while you may consider the dental industry as more hands on, than data led, you may be surprised at where it could go. Knowledge is power, which is why integrating digital technologies to save time, predict oral health issues and improve clinical outcomes is the next big step for us in dentistry. Principal Dentist at Bupa Dental, Dr Mark Dohlad, says the potential of AI in dentistry is huge. “We're seeing its impact across various disciplines, from disease identification to decision-making support, and even in predicting treatment outcomes” Dr Dohlad said. “From a clinician's perspective, if properly applied, AI can be a game-changer. It's like having an extra set of eyes that helps with diagnosing diseases, creating personalised treatment plans, and even predicting clinician mistakes before they happen. “AI can increase their trust in our diagnoses and treatments, enhance communication, and provide a more humanising care experience. Plus, with AI, we can democratise oral health knowledge, making it more accessible to everyone while improving educational resources in our universities.” Learn more about the potential for AI in dentistry: https://lnkd.in/gb65dSAu

  • The 2024 Oral Health Tracker Report from the Australian Dental Association, suggests that almost 11 in every 1000 Aussie children aged 5-9 were admitted for preventable hospitalisations due to dental conditions, placing pressure on the public hospital system at a time when many emergency rooms are overburdened. Dr Mark Dohlad, our Principal Dental Officer, said that many of these hospitalisations may have been avoided if the children had received regular dental check-ups and treatment from an early age.
