Podcast listenership has gone up again. Edison Research has just released its 2024 Podcast Consumer Report. The figures, are based on the US. But after a surge in podcasting in Australia over the past few years, we have similar listening habits and figures to the US. So there's a lot we can also take from it. Here are the key points (that I think would translate quite similarly in Australia): 🔹 More people than ever are listening to podcasts: 67% of the 12+ population has ever listened to a podcast; 47% of the 12+ population are monthly podcast listeners and 34% are weekly listeners. 🔹 Listeners are spending more time than ever with podcasts: In 2014, out of the daily time spent listening to all audio by those age 13+, 2% was spent with podcasts. In 2024, that number more than quadrupled and podcasts now account for 11% of daily time with audio. 🔷 Podcasts reach all generations: 29% of kids age 6-12, 59% of those age 12-34, 55% of those age 35-54, and 27% of those age 55+ are monthly podcast listeners.    🔹 Podcasts listeners are a highly coveted audience for advertisers as they are affluent and educated. 🔹 Podcasts reach receptive audiences: 46% of weekly podcast listeners have purchased a product or service as a result of hearing an ad on a podcast. Essentially, the report is a case for why podcast are an attractive vehicle for advertisers. In what has already been a tumultuous year for NZ media, this might just be its biggest week yet. And one that raises some important questions. The news that the Fair Digital News Bargaining Bill will progress has been heralded as a step towards creating much-needed sustainability for our local news media. There are, however, concerns that Meta may respond with a news ban. With good reason - it's already happened in other countries where similar legislation has been introduced. Is this the shot in the arm our media industry needs? Will Meta and Google act in good faith? And what lessons can we learn from Canada and Australia? #NZmedia #FairDigitalNews #MediaIndustry

We #communications and #PublicRelations professionals can, and should, be part of board-level conversations and we will help, and advise on, how decisions are made, and latterly in explaining why. I've long been an advocate of the job of comms leaders being one of advising and supporting boards to have the best chance of achieving what they exist to achieve. In doing some research, I've found this passage from the NHS Leadership Academy 💙 about good governance that makes it crystal clear that professional communications is key because it is about stakeholders, relationships and building trust and confidence: "The purpose of NHS boards is to govern effectively and in doing so to build public and stakeholder confidence that their health and healthcare is in safe hands. This fundamental accountability to the public and stakeholders is delivered by building confidence: • In the quality and safety of health services. • That resources are invested in a way that delivers optimal health outcomes. • In the accessibility and responsiveness of health services. • That the public can appropriately shape health services to meet their needs. • That public money is spent in a way that is efficient and effective." That aligns perfectly with the final line of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations definition of public relations: "... It is the planned and sustained effort to establish and maintain goodwill and mutual understanding between an organisation and its publics." Long will I continue building relationships at all levels to help organisations build the relationships they need with colleagues, volunteers, customers - whoever makes up their publics - and put them at the heart of decision-making. If you’ve got bad news to share, now is a pretty good time to do it. There isn’t anything immoral or unethical about this - it’s just that news is bigger and busier at the moment. It goes in cycles. What is a big story on a slow news day (week) can be a blip on a busy one. Which gives you more capacity to handle your bad news well, to the people you need to know it the most. BlinkLab Limited Chairman, Brian Leedman, opens up about the new partnership between Blink Lab and Turning Point Autism Foundation on ausbiz. The collaboration is centered on a clinical study in children with autism in the United States. Armed with proprietary technology, Blink Lab is bringing disruption to the field by employing smartphone-based #AI technology that diagnoses #autism in children as young as 18 months. An impressive departure from the conventional diagnoses age bracket of five to six years, facilitated by a special reflex response test. The technology gaining momentum in the conversation is an offshoot from Princeton University in New Jersey. The innovative product is significantly revolutionising healthcare and yielding an impressive performance on the ASX listing since its debut barely a month ago. Brian shares their imminent plans to commence an FDA registration study in the second half of the current year, with the assistance of the Turning Point Autism Foundation, a reputable Illinois-based institute. Looming debates about Blink Lab's game-changing trials are concluded. The best-case scenario is to validate the precision of their disruptive technology, boasting an astounding sensitivity and specificity rate of 85 and 84 percent, respectively. Did Costello resign, or was he pushed? Best practice is that Nine's Board acted. It is not a passive role.   If that’s the case, from a communications POV, there are two more immediate proactive steps that will impact the reputation of the Board to staff, shareholders and others.   1. Catherine West, the new chair, can broadly flag her (the Board's) philosophy and the company’s pending cultural change. She can either make a headline announcement or the Board can act by engineering further changes, or both.   Saying/doing nothing is not a good option.   2. If the Board decides to continue with more change, to act, then CEO Mike Sneesby is a target. If the Board wants to continue clearing the house, any other ‘dinosaurs’ can go.   Then, of course, there’s a review of the $1m payout to Darren Wick.   This is simply best practice communications, measured by ‘Does it meet the communities’ expectations?’   3. A presentation? Catherine West’s option, ideally from a comms POV, is to talk to staff; the more interactive, the better. It will go public, leaked or otherwise, so it reaches shareholders, etc. It doesn’t have to be detailed. An investigation is underway, and it’s usually fairly easy for an insider to predict many of its findings. Getting ahead of the investigation’s findings with the obvious creates trust. It will be stabilising for staff particularly (it's also a chance to flag Nine's financial challenges). She can identify certain cultural principles that are essential: a broad commitment to cultural inclusiveness, no harassment, a complaints mechanism, cultural training, etc. She must be honest. A commitment to a degree of transparency is also an essential; how that's engineered can be managed later.   Some of these principles are already Nine Board policy: “The Board sets and monitors progress against measurable objectives to track our performance in engaging, retaining and fostering a diverse and inclusive culture”, is the Environmental, Social and Governance Policy – https://lnkd.in/gZ7iM6zk.   The other ‘rule’ in this headland conversation is not to commit to detail. CEOs and Chairs have long learned the hard way to avoid making early commitments that they can’t keep. That’s not an absence of transparency; it's common sense.

Thanks to Michelle Redfern for sharing this article. The points raised by Annabel Crabb will stay with me. The stories shared in the article are not exclusive to the media industry. Two key points from me: ⭐️Female CEOs - lead with your title, shout it out. You worked hard to get there and being there matters. Visibility matters. Leadership is a genuine privilege and it gives us incredible power - yes “power” to make changes for the good. ⭐️Secondly - if you see this post and have never ever genuinely considered that your leadership skills might have a few hairs on them - make today that day. Can you measure how engaged your team are or aren’t? The Gallup State of the Workplace report came out this week and the stats are really, really poor. If you are a leader, step up to the privilege and responsibility of the role. Don’t be like the leader I heard about this week who didn’t provide any induction at all, never spent time with a new hire for 9 months or respond to their questions about a complex process - only to join a meeting and grandstand their knowledge and expertise by answering all questions in 45 mins. 9 months too late.

Media relations tip 101: Never assault a journalist. This should go without saying, but recent events remind us of the obvious: never assault a journalist. Besides being illegal, it's a brilliant way to destroy your reputation and credibility. And while we're at it, here are a few more "don'ts" to remember: 1. Don't lose your cool: Stay calm and composed, even in challenging situations. 2. Don't walk out of an interview: It shows disrespect, will damage your image and make you either look incompetent, defensive and/or untrustworthy with something to hide. 3. Don't say "no comment": Be more strategic, open and helpful. Try responses like, "That's not my remit to comment on" or "I can't answer that at the moment, but I'll get back to you." The website documents wokeness in New Zealand-based businesses so that Kiwi consumers can decide for themselves who to do business with and who to avoid, based on the values of the business.   “Most people just want to purchase products and services, then get on with their lives. They don’t want businesses shoving woke beliefs down their throats as part of their purchase. They also don’t want to support businesses who then fund groups that the consumer opposes – for example, funding InsideOut to push radical gender and sexuality messaging in primary schools. Businesses should stick to business, not telling people and their staff what and how to think,” says CEO Bob McCoskrie.   Family First is being regularly contacted by employees concerned about the ramming down of ideologies under the guise of DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion). This includes most government departments and organisations.   Unfortunately, “Woke Capitalism” is spreading rapidly through the corporate business world affecting every category of business. Many corporations, CEOs, and cultural elites are supporting “progressive” left-wing agendas such as DEI, transgenderism, same-sex marriage, climate alarmism, abortion, and Critical Race Theory.   “We want consumers to access the information on this website so that they can vote with their dollars, and do business with companies which don’t hate their values. Companies that support woke causes and agendas ultimately pass on the costs to the consumer.”   A poll by Curia Market Research last year found that 33% of respondents want businesses to stay neutral on controversial issues, 20% want them to take a stand and 45% have no preference either way. However, 67% of respondents said it was somewhat or very likely they would boycott a business that took a public stand on a controversial issue they disagreed with.   Industries examined on the new website include airlines, banks & finance, energy, food & drink, petrol, retail, supermarkets and telco. The information collated is based on published material from the companies on their social media, websites & in the media.
