🔍 "Why do economists hold only a small fraction of senior jobs? "The short answer is women are held to high standards. The long answer involves systemic gender biases at every step along academia's path to seniority - the tenure track." "And no, it is not just about women wanting to start families." Despite women-authored papers receiving 25% more citations and being 1-6% more readable, the field remains heavily male-dominated. 🔹 Only 25.7% of economists in the UK are women. 🔹 Women represent just 18.3% of economics professors. 🔹 The gender pay gap in economics has only decreased by 1% over the past decade. In academia: 🔸 Women-authored papers spend 3-6 months longer in peer review. 🔸 Women-authored papers spend 3-6 months longer in peer review. 🔸 Women then spend far more time addressing feedback that is lower quality, harder-to-implement and/or less relevant 🔸 These extra efforts see women producing an estimated 20% fewer publications, and 43% fewer publications in top-five journals And at seminars/events: ▪ During 2014-2019, only 22.8% of invited talks were given by women, and only 0.5% were by women from under-represented minorities. ▪ Women are asked more questions and interrupted more often during seminars. ⚙ Changes are slowly happening, and the success of economists like Nobel laureate Claudia Goldin proves that progress is possible. 🔊 The World Economic Forum's latest Global Gender Gap Index Report is out....and the results are sobering. Here's a snapshot: 🌐 GLOBAL INSIGHTS ▪ The gender gap is 68.5% closed—only a 0.1% from last year ▪ At this rate, gender parity is 134 years away (in the year 2158) ▪ Progress across economic, educational, health, and political dimensions has been minimal. 📊 AUSTRALIAN INSIGHTS ▪ Our ranking improved by two places to 24th ▪ Economic Participation & Opportunity: Slipped to 42nd from 38th ▪ Educational Attainment: Dropped to 84th from 78th, due to low secondary education completion. ▪ Health and Survival: Slight improvement to 88th from 89th ▪ Political Empowerment: Up to 28th, with ranks of 17th in ministerial positions and 33rd for women in parliament. 🚒 We need faster action! 🔥 At WLIA, we're more determined than ever to grow a critical mass of diverse women leaders in politics, media, policymaking and business. 💪 We know that shared power and decision-making between men and women, as highlighted in the report, leads to better outcomes for all Australians.
