Scalpel, stat! In the month of June, our amazing new graduate veterinarians undertake their Soft Tissue Abdomen practical workshops through our VetPartners Veterinary Training Centres. This session provides our new graduates with valuable information on preparing a patient for exploratory laparotomy, avoiding the 'peak and shriek!', tips for gastrointestinal surgery and organ biopsies, oesophagostomy tube placement and post-operative care. Soft tissue surgery is particularly challenging for new graduate veterinarians due to the complex anatomy of the abdomen, which contains many vital organs and structures. Each case requires different techniques and adapting to various species and sizes of patients. Managing bleeding, performing delicate suturing, and ensuring proper postoperative care are critical skills that demand high precision and continuous learning. The pressure and high stakes of surgery make mastering these skills essential for new vets. Congratulations to Lisa Blood from Vets4Pets; Sharon Geeson from Vetwest Animal Hospitals Whitford; and Allison Lennox from Montrose Vet Clinic and New Norfolk Vet Centre, who are the first three Practice Managers to complete the PEAK Practice Manager Development Pathway! We launched PEAK in 2023, with 175 Practice Managers across VetPartners clinics participating in the program which focuses on building leadership skills that are specific to the veterinary profession. This pathways aims to further develop capability in operational efficiency, people leadership, financial management and more! Some of the feedback we received upon completion: - Lisa said that she loved the opportunity to bring all her knowledge together as well as understand more about financials and how to actively analyse and understand data. - Sharon has been able to readily apply some of the learnings to her day to day role, including using margin reports and margin bench marks; managing stock and COGS; and understanding the little things that can make a big impact. - Allison appreciated being able to work through the program at her own pace without feeling rushed, and overall found the learning experience beneficial to help her feel more comfortable in her role. We look forward to supporting more team members to complete the program over the coming months! Did you know, Australia has one of the highest pet ownership rates in the world, with an estimated 30.4 million pets* proving owners with comfort and joy. With that massive number in mind, imagine how many veterinary professionals we need to keep our adored pets happy and healthy - the answer is lots. The industry urgently needs help to address staff shortages, long working hours, client abuse and mental health support so that we don’t lose any more vets to burn out and suicide. Sign our petition and together let’s action change ➡️ https://lnkd.in/g_qqtvkY *Source: Animal Medicines Australia

We can't believe we have now created over 120 super nurses! Our Super Nurse Program was first launched across Australia and NZ to help empower our nurses in our clinics across Australia and New Zealand - the backbone of an efficient clinical team! Our now re-vamped the program includes additional e-learning content and a strong focus on implementing the skills learnt into each nurses clinic. Tammy Smith from Burnie Veterinary Centre in Tasmania is one of our most recent Super Nurse graduates after completing the program last year. Before starting the program, Tammy said after being a nurse for 10 years, she was feeling a bit flat and stagnant in her role. "I have thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of this course, and received excellent support from The L&D team. I have learnt so many new skills which I have already implemented in my clinic. Whether you are just starting out, or an experienced nurse, I would recommend for all stages of nursing young and old!" This week Chief People Officer, Dr Michelle Phipps FCPHR, PhD shared her insights at the #HRDWellbeing Summit, speaking about initiatives and strategies focused on psychosocial safety. Last year, VetPartners Australia and New Zealand were the recipients of the Best Safety and Wellbeing Program at the HRD Awards for some of the work our organisation delivers in this space, so a fantastic opportunity to share some of this knowledge with other industries, in great company with Nicki Luther and Gaya Srikumar of course 😉
Yesterday I spoke at the HRD/Healthy Minds conference with Gaya Srikumar from Pfizer pharmaceuticals and Nicki Luther from Stryker medical equipment about wellbeing strategy and leadership. Wonderful to share initiatives with these two brilliant women about the world of HR in health (and other industries) be that human or animal. At VetPartners Australia and New Zealand, we have a workforce that is passionate about employee, client and patient safety and wellness - from our vets and clinical support teams to our support office; and we are privileged to have won Best Safety and Wellbeing Program 2023 at the HRD Awards for some of the work our organisation delivers. I loved talking about psychosocial safety and the important work of organisations like Sophie's Legacy - who seek to protect and bring focus to clinician mental health. I was also surprised how much fun it was to focus on our Pets at Work policy and some of the stories that it has created! It was great connecting with Catherine McNair, Sharyn Schultz and John Alexander (FCPHR, GAICD) too. Loved Catherine's quote: "Wellbeing is not just about shiny toys"... We applaud Sophie's Legacy on their advocacy and efforts to educate the broader public on mental health challenges within our veterinary community. There is still a lot of work to do to in this space, but every little step counts - well done Gary and team👏 Brett Hodgkin Michelle Phipps FCPHR, PhD Hester Raijmakers
Words really do matter. We were blown away, but not surprised, by the public response to our posts about the NAB advertisement that targeted vets. In case you missed the incredible news, NAB got in touch to apologise and have decided to remove the ad. Lauren Novak from The Sunday Mail spoke to Garry, Sophie’s Dad, about the turn of events. (Page 25 in today’s paper.) Thanks for your support. Let’s keep inspiring change 🌻 #mentalhealth #suicideprevention #sophieslegacy #veterinarianindustry #sundaymail
