There is no better way to fully understand the hardship many people face, or the powerful impact you can make, than through volunteering. Recently the team from ADCO Constructions (supported through the Brinsmead Hill Family Foundation) rolled up their sleeves for a Community Give Back Day at our Oasis Youth Services in inner-city Sydney. More than 35 people, including 13 companies contracted by ADCO, volunteered their time, materials and labour to give centre a makeover. The team of volunteers were able to tend to every area of the centre, which has been supporting thousands of young people in Surry Hills for many years. The service delivers a range of programs and services, including vocational training, drug and alcohol support and driver training. “Thanks to our people and valued trade partners stepping away from their normal roles for a day to apply their skills and resources, significant improvements were able to be made to the facility providing ongoing benefits for the youth,” Neil Harding, Managing Director at ADCO Constructions “ADCO being a family-owned Australian business with a deep connection to community, we feel closely aligned with the vision and values of The Salvation Army.” We truly value the contributions of our corporate partners, who come alongside us to make a real difference in the lives of people experiencing a crisis and give a new beginning to Australians in need. Thank you again ADCO and their trade partners who kindly donated time and resources to make this possible: Pro Electrical, Urban Ground, Bingo Industries, Metropolitan Demolitions, Deluxe Cleaning, Eora Group, Sam the Paving Man, Bunnings, Precision Painting, Maxton Fox, Timberfix, WRC, Allcott Hire, Fredon. #TheSalvationArmy #Volunteering #BelieveInGood

  • Based in Townsville, Chris Congoo is The Salvation Army Territorial Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Engagement Coordinator. Chris says NAIDOC is a special week for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and for the wider Australian society to “celebrate our shared culture and the achievements and the resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their communities.” At his local Salvos, they hold a range of activities during NAIDOC Week, encouraging community participation. “For example, we invite local Elders in from the wider community to come to our church and teach about rich Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.” This includes yarning circles and cooking traditional food for community members. Chris is currently working on several projects for Salvos churches, centres and services, including The Salvation Army Cultural Framework around areas such as Acknowledgement of Country and Welcome to Country. “For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, it's a ceremonial process that we've been practicing for centuries, and we need the Australian people to recognise, acknowledge and respect these protocols.” To read more from Chris, go to: https://lnkd.in/e7rNbPeN #TheSalvationArmy #NAIDOCWeek

  • Rent is at an all-time high and access to housing is at an all-time low. For the most vulnerable Aussies, it’s a soul-crushing combination. Something has to to change, or Australians will continue to face homelessness and hunger. It shouldn’t be this way. Until the system changes to look after everyone, your support is vital. You’re helping our services be there for thousands of people when they need us most — giving them essentials, food and a safe place to stay. Thank you. #Salvos #TheSalvationArmy #RedShieldAppeal #HousingCrisis

  • This year’s Refugee Week theme, ‘Finding Freedom’ – with a focus on family – encapsulates the profound journey of resilience, strength and unity that defines the refugee experience. The Salvation Army supports refugees upon arrival in Australia through material aid via our Doorways service, and many of our Salvo locations offer programs to help build life skills or facilitate social/spiritual connections. In the coming weeks, The Salvation Army’s New Beginnings Project (NBP) will launch. It is a community sponsorship program for refugees, also known as the Community Refugee Integration and Settlement Pilot (CRISP). This is a new refugee sponsorship program in Australia where community members can sponsor and welcome families who have been recognised by UNHCR to settle in Australia. #TheSalvationArmy #BelieveInGood #WorldRefugeeWeek
