‘When Meyers Place closed in 2017, it was seen as the end of an era for the bar credited with starting a revolution as Melbourne’s first laneway bar.’ The Age ‘A number of factors led to the emergence of Melbourne’s laneway culture, including the city’s distinctive grid layout, the relaxing of liquor licensing laws when Crown casino opened and the Postcode 3000 push in the 1990s that encouraged people to move into the city’ says Six Degrees Founding Director James Legge in an interview with The Age’s Cara Waters. James will share his thoughts on the emergence of Melbourne’s laneway culture and its impact on city design as part of this year’s Open House Melbourne weekend next month. Executive director and chief curator, Tania Davidge, says she wants this year’s program to take people behind the scenes to showcase some of Melbourne’s unique stories. “Melbourne’s laneway culture is incredibly strong, but it hasn’t always been this way,” she says. “In the 1990s, Six Degrees saw the potential of our laneways, and their design for Meyers Place bar was seminal in helping to bring them to life.” Read below for more from James Legge and Matt Moloney (owner of the relocated venue trading as Bard’s Apothecary). Last year WPI set a goal to deliver 25 new homes for women and children facing homelessness by 2025. They have funded the first 23 and now need to secure the remaining 2. Today is Giving Day, the day that every donation to help them deliver the remaining 2 homes will be DOUBLED. 12 hours only until 8pm. As longtime friends and supporters, we want to see WPI reach their goal to open more doors for vulnerable women and children. See link to donations in Women's Property Initiatives post below. We admire your work team, all our fingers crossed! #wpigivingday

Thank you The Local Project for the excellent feature of the Munro Development and narrm ngarrgu in the current issue! Likely our most city shaping project yet...
Issue No. 14 Feature • Constructed as part of the $500 million Munro Development and unveiled in November 2023, the three-level, 3,000-square-metre narrm ngarrgu Library and Family Services by Six Degrees Architects is much more than a library. It’s a dynamic space that seamlessly weaves together the essence of Melbourne’s laneways, bustling market life and a profound respect for Indigenous culture.
