Today marks the 20th anniversary of the Royal Exhibition Building World Heritage listing. 🎉 First opened in 1880 to host Victoria's first international exhibition, this iconic building has played a pivotal role in Australia's political, economic, and social history. This landmark has long been a significant venue, hosting the first Federal Parliament of the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901, serving as a training base and barracks for the Australian Air Force during World War II, and even showcasing competitions during the Melbourne Olympics in 1956. On 1 July 2004, the Royal Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens became the first Victorian place and the first built heritage site in Australia to be recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This legacy endures today, with the building remaining an architectural and cultural icon of Melbourne, hosting major festivals and events, and welcoming visitors on tours to enjoy the views from the famed Dome Promenade. 🔗 Learn more about the history of this incredible building.

This extraordinary 50,000-year-old discovery in an underground cave, is one of the most complete fossils ever found in Australia. Museums Victoria Research Institute has led a team of scientists, rangers, and citizen cavers to retrieve the skeleton of the extinct, short-faced kangaroo Simosthenurus occidentalis from deep within the Nightshade Cave. With 150 bones, this specimen is 71% complete, offering a unique window into Australia's ancient past. The fossil, now under the careful stewardship of the Museums Victoria Research Institute, has been made available for research projects of significant global interest. We’re excited to share rare access to the Simosthenurus occidentalis fossil, with the specimen on display at Melbourne Museum in our Research Institute Gallery from Monday 24 June. After welcoming over 300,000 visitors, we bid farewell to the phenomenon that is Titanic: The Artefact Exhibition. Our CEO, Lynley Crosswell, reflects on the epic journey...

As we bid farewell to the incredible voyage of Titanic: The Artefact Exhibition I am filled with immense pride and gratitude.    A momentous occasion to commemorate, it has been wonderful to welcome over 300,000 visitors to this experience since opening at Melbourne Museum in December 2023. Included in that huge swathe of visitors were 100,000 international, interstate and regional Victorian guests, including 42,000 children. What a wonderful way to fuel their curiosity and teach valuable lessons from the past.   Together – we marvelled at the 200 artefacts recovered from the wreck, while the majestic Grand Staircase became a cherished backdrop for thousands of selfies and numerous romantic wedding proposals. We even followed the journey of real Titanic passengers with our own boarding passes - complete with gripping narrative and the ultimate resolution - who survived?  Who wouldn’t be moved by such an experience?     Throughout this incredible journey, many milestones have been reached and expectations greatly surpassed. The world-class blockbuster exhibition was an Australian exclusive, direct from a sold-out season in Paris. Sessions were extended and sold out again and again, making it the most popular touring exhibition at Melbourne Museum since 2016.    I’d like to personally thank our partners, the Experiential Media Group, RMS Titanic, Inc. and Visit Victoria, whose support was pivotal. Special recognition also to the The Fresh Collective for enhancing our guests’ experience serving over 10,000 exquisite High Teas reminiscent of the Titanic’s 1912 splendour.     I especially commend the dedicated staff at Museums Victoria whose tireless efforts have been the keystone of this exhibition’s success.     The overwhelming success of Titanic: The Artefact Exhibition is a tribute to its enduring legacy. The remarkable interest and engagement from audiences showcases the breadth, depth, and diversity of connections between Museums Victoria and the communities we serve. These interactions generate significant economic and social value for Victoria and Victorians.    As Titanic sets sail for new shores, we await the much-anticipated arrival of the 66 million-year-old fossil of Victoria the T.rex. The upcoming exhibition features one of the largest and most complete Tyrannosaurus rex fossils in the world, marking the first time a real T. rex has been displayed in Victoria.    This transition from the oceans of the Atlantic to the Cretaceous period is more than a change of exhibits – it is a continuing promise to bring wonderous, unparalleled experiences to our audiences.

Notre-Dame de Paris - The Augmented Exhibition is coming to Immigration Museum in December! In this new immersive exhibition, you’ll explore the cathedral‘s history, from its earliest origins in the 12th century to its illustrious 850-year history, and the painstaking restoration following the devastating fire. Opening on 5 December 2024 – just days before the restored cathedral reopens in Paris on 8 December and for the first time since the 2019 fire – this international exhibition will grant singular access to Notre-Dame for visitors on the other side of the world, right here in Melbourne. The exhibition brings to light the skill, artistry and vision of the cathedral’s architects, craftsmen and builders over the ages, culminating in the 21st-century experts who are restoring the iconic landmark to its former glory today. Using inspired technology from HistoPad, presented by Histovery and supported by the L'Oréal Groupe – we can’t wait to see this exhibition come to life in the grand space of our most beloved Immigration Museum Long Room.
