🌲 Royal National Park and its neighbouring parks has undergone a world-first audit of its ecological health. 📑 Capturing these results in our first Scorecard involved an unprecedented scientific effort, with over 200 camera and acoustic monitoring devices deployed to capture over 1 million images. 🦊 While we revealed a number of incredible results, we also discovered some challenges, such as red foxes likely impacting populations of native species and feral deer numbers remaining high in some areas. Thanks to this new data, National Parks and Wildlife Service is already responding; increasing feral animal control, adjusting current deer and fire management and more. 🐨 But we’re not done yet - the next report for Royal National Park will be published in mid-2025 with survey results for koalas, gliders and owls, with a scorecard soon released for Kosciuszko National Park. #EcoHealthScorecard #RoyalNationalPark #NSWParks

💧 NSW’s first ever Hydrogen Centre of Excellence will train the plumbers and gas fitters of the future 🔧 The $25 million investment will deliver a practical training centre capable of training and upskilling 8,250 plumbers and gas fitters in its first five years of operation, with the centre also employing approximately 50 staff. On top of the traditional skills learned by plumbers, apprentices will receive hands-on training on hydrogen equipment, such as electrolysers, gas fitting techniques and safety protocols. A team of NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service firefighters have been deployed to Canada to assist with the catastrophic wildfires in Alberta and British Columbia. Along with representatives from the NSW Rural Fire Service, Forestry Corporation of NSW and NSW State Emergency Service, NPWS staff will support their Canadian counterparts for up to five weeks. NPWS firefighters are regarded as skilled and capable firefighters, filling roles from direct ground attack to management and incident control, as well as many aerial fire-fighting tasks. This is not the first time the two nations have shared resources - Australia and Canada hold a long tradition of supporting one another, with a deployment occurring as recently as last year and during the 2019-20 Black Summer bushfires across NSW and Victoria 🇨🇦 🇦🇺

Winter typically brings wild wave conditions to NSW and this year is no different, with waves 4-6M high offshore spotted in parts of the state 🌊 The NSW Government's Nearshore Wave Tool provides an interactive map allowing you to zoom in and see wave height, swell, space between waves and their direction anywhere on the coast. It's particularly useful for surfers, swimmers and recreational boaters with conditions available up to ten days ahead. Find information for your area 👉 bit.ly/NearshoreWaveTool and always check Surf Life Saving NSW for safety advice and information on local beach closures.

Calling all land owners 🌿 Remediation Orders are a critical step in rehabilitating damage to our natural environment and ensuring our native species are adequately protected for generations to come. From next month, we'll be carrying out an audit on existing Orders to ensure damage sites are being properly regenerated. You need to be clear before you clear. Environmental conservation students will benefit from help with tuition fees, study materials and living expenses with the extension of the Glen Turner Scholarship for another ten years. Established in 2015, the scholarship was created in memory of Glen Turner, a NSW Office of Environment and Heritage officer murdered while performing his duties. Glen studied at the University of Newcastle, and since its inception, the Scholarship has assisted five gifted and disadvantaged students with their studies. The funding, which has been doubled to $20,000 each year for the next ten years will ensure talented students can pursue careers in environmental conservation and carry on Glen Turner’s legacy. There are plenty of great Grants in Australia, but not all of them are famous for making NSW the best place to own an EV. If you're a NSW business looking to electrify your fleet, or own a site that would be a great location for a public EV fast charger, or work with local governments to expand kerbside EV chargers, then we have a grant for you. Biodiversity in NSW is in crisis. The NSW Government's plan for nature will focus on three key areas to protect the environment and manage native vegetation now and into the future. This includes: 👉 reforming the biodiversity offsets scheme 👉 ending excess land clearing 👉 strengthening environmental protections The plan for nature outlines the legislative, policy and program directions the NSW Government will take to respond to the statutory reviews and deliver on its commitments. It also acknowledges the intrinsic relationship between Aboriginal people and biodiversity, with partnership with Aboriginal organisations and communities being a key focus during implementation of all elements of the response. A huge thanks to the local community and ORRCA Inc. volunteers, for reporting sightings of the seal to NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS). The seal had been entangled in the plastic for several months, after its disappearances for weeks at a time made it difficult to intervene. Skilled NPWS staff were thrilled to finally free the seal, who was unharmed in the process and happily re-joined its friends in the ocean after being assisted. This #PlasticFreeJuly we're reminding everyone to ditch the single-use plastics and dispose of all rubbish properly, so plants, animals and our environment aren’t harmed.
