Every member of our First Nations Advisory Group is dedicated to amplifying First Nations talent, and member Emily Wells has her eyes set on showcasing a wide variety of First Nations talent.    Emily is a proud Kamilaroi producer and playwright currently working with YIRRAMBOI Festival. She is passionate about using performance to drive social change and supporting artists to thrive within the creative process.    Emily has produced small to large-scale performances, gatherings, and creative developments with emerging and established First Nations creatives across Australia. Since receiving the Emerging Female Arts Leader Award at the Matilda Awards in 2020, Emily has worked closely with leading independents and companies such as the ILBIJERRI Theatre Company, Karul Projects, Digi Youth Arts, Queensland Theatre, Le Boite Theatre Company, and Walt Disney World.     As a playwright, Emily’s debut play ‘Face to Face’ premiered at Metro Arts in Brisbane, as part of Playlab Theatre’s 2022 season, and was selected for their year-long script development program Alpha Processing, as well as the inaugural Sparks program, which was delivered in partnership with QPAC and Moogahlin Performing Arts.    It’s safe to say Emily is a powerful creative force and we’re so pleased to have her sharing her knowledge with us as part of BIGSOUND’s First Nations Advisory Group.

We’re thrilled to have Catherine Satour, a woman of Arrernte and Mirning descent, as a member of BIGSOUND’s First Nations Advisory Group for 2024, as she’s devoted so much of her time and energy developing talent in Central Australia.    Catherine is a musician who shares her experiences of life, love, and place through songs that fuse both rock and soul. She played her first gig at 9 years old with her father Bunna Lawrie, and his legendary band Coloured Stone, and has since performed original material with the Darwin Symphony Orchestra in Songs From Big Sky Country at the 2011 Alice Desert Festival.     On top of all this, Catherine was nominated for a National Indigenous Music Award in 2012 and released her first solo album in 2013.    Nowadays, Catherine spends her time travelling to remote communities to facilitate music and performance workshops with local schools and youth organisations.    Catherine also mentors young local artists through the Desert Divas project, which led to the release of Central Australia’s first compilation album of Indigenous female artists, Desert Divas Volume 1, in October 2012.    We’re honoured to be working with Catherine on this year’s BIGSOUND program, to showcase First Nations talent and learn more about her own experiences within the Australian music community.

We’re incredibly proud to have Boe Spearim as a member of our First Nations Advisory Group to help us program BIGSOUND 2024.     Boe is a Kooma, Murawarii, and Gamilaraay podcaster and activist, who was raised on the southside of Brisbane.    He entered the world of community radio in 2012, by volunteering on 4ZZZ’s Indigi Briz program, before studying a Certificate III in Media Broadcasting at 98.9FM. In 2017, Boe began hosting Let’s Talk, a talkback program that discusses issues that affect First Nations people, and both created and hosted Frontier War Stories, a podcast dedicated to truth-telling about a side of Australia that has been left out of the history books.    Whilst finding his passion in radio, Boe became involved in activism at the Brisbane Aboriginal Sovereign Embassy, which was established in Musgrave Park in 2012, and is a current member of Warriors of the Aboriginal Resistance.     We’re honoured to have Boe sharing his wisdom and experiences across both broadcasting and activism with us this year.

Applications are now open for one of the most influential roles in the Australian music industry. QMusic is searching for the next BIGSOUND Conference Programmer to facilitate and enable more insightful conversations at the southern hemisphere’s largest music industry event.  This illustrious role continues the work of current BIGSOUND Conference Programmer Tom Larkin, who has spent the last five years building powerful conference programs featuring a rich list of industry leaders. "It’s been an incredible opportunity to serve the music community over the last five years and continue the astonishing legacy of previous programmers like Maggie Collins, Nick O’Byrne and many more, who built this event from its initial showcase into the most prolific music conference in the southern hemisphere,” said Larkin.     “Building upon work that began over 23 years ago can seem like a daunting task, but it is an amazing job, and the support for you to succeed from the industry both locally and globally is enormous.     “Whilst I will miss this season of my career dearly, I cannot wait to experience how the conference grows under the stewardship of the next programmer from 2025 and beyond.” Click below to learn more and apply now! https://lnkd.in/ezJ7Rmmt

It takes a village to put together the largest music industry gathering in the southern hemisphere, and Larissa Jane Hume (nee Ryan) is helping us build a spectacular program for BIGSOUND 2024 as a member of our Programming Advisory Group and our First Nations Consultancy Group. Larissa passionately believes in storytelling through music to enrich and progress society. A proud Wamba Wamba (Gourrmyanjuk) and and Dhudhuroa (Thedora Mittung) woman, she grew up dreaming of pursuing a career in the creative industries.  Larissa is a Director of baked, a First Nations co-owned and creator-led social enterprise working to open doors for visual artists, designers, stylists, photographers, directors, videographers, screenwriters, and animators to collaborate with musicians, as well as Hutch Collective. Her career spans brand management, arts, and marketing, whilst also working as an Artist Manager, Creative Manager, and A&R Manager. In 2020 she began working as an A&R Manager for Warner Music Australia, before making The Music Network’s 30 Under 30 List for her Artist Management work in 2021.  Larissa strives to build a stronger music community through every aspect of her work, and we couldn’t be more excited to be working with her on this year’s massive BIGSOUND program.
