Getting a new recruit through the door is certainly cause for celebration, but save the champagne for when they've settled in happily. At an Australian Industry Group (Ai Group) webinar last week that explored HR for small business, Ai Group Workplace Lawyers’ Victoria Halliday said #recruitment was just the first step in the employment cycle. #Retention, reward and talent development are equally important, and failing to pay attention to these areas could incur significant costs to your business. “There are so many ways to create a positive employment cycle — beyond recruitment,” Victoria said. Australian Industry Group (Ai Group) Chief Executive Innes Willox has paid tribute to Skills and Training Minister Brendan O'Connor and Indigenous Australians Minister Linda Burney, who are both retiring from federal politics. "Mr O'Connor and Ms Burney have made significant contributions to building a better Australia," Mr Willox said. “Mr O’Connor has pursued reform and alignment to build an inclusive skilling system that engages and better prepares Australians for a productive future. “Notable has been building Jobs and Skills Australia and the Jobs and Skills Councils, both critical elements in the policy architecture that supports our national skilling effort now and into the future. “His focus on foundation skills, negotiating a new National Skills Agreement and solid support for VET Qualification reform are important legacies, including increased funding for vocational education and training. “He has always understood how important it is to work closely with industry, both employers and unions, to progress this strategic national importance. “Ms Burney, the first Indigenous person in NSW politics, the first Indigenous woman in the House of Representatives and the first Indigenous woman to take on this portfolio, has done more than any other in terms of promoting First Nations issues, including in the employment and skills development. “The values that have driven her over the years – kindness, grace, resilience and integrity – are to be admired and valued.” ▪ Mr O'Connor is pictured with Mr Willox and Ai Group Centre for Education and Training Executive Director Megan Lilly at an Ai Group Skills Roundtable event in Melbourne in November last year. #AiGroup Gemma Daley

Australian Industry Group (Ai Group) has welcomed today’s announcement that Australian Manufacturing Week 2026 will be held in #queensland for the first time. Ai Group Head of Queensland Michelle Farquhar and Head of Northern Australia Dean Deighton said it was a terrific opportunity for local manufacturers to showcase their capabilities. The 2026 event in #Brisbane will be the first time AMW is held outside of Sydney or Melbourne and cements Qld’s reputation as a manufacturing powerhouse. Ms Farquhar, pictured at Ai Group's Women in Manufacturing breakfast event in Cairns earlier this month, said the growth of the industry in Queensland since the height of Covid was outstripping the southern states traditionally known for manufacturing. “Investments like Suntory Oceania relocating to the western corridor of Brisbane is a prime example of the optimism in manufacturing in Queensland,” she said. The Australian Industry Group (Ai Group) member that invented Sherbet Bombs in the 1920s has wrapped up its 95-year-old #confectionery business. 🍬 Robert (Bob) and Lorraine McQuade have sold Lagoon Confectioners to Darrell Lea Confectionery Co Pty Ltd and can now look forward to a well-earned rest at 86 and 83 respectively. Their daughter, Tina — who has also devoted her life to the family business, along with brother Dean — said: “Dad’s been working since he was 14; he says it’s the first time he’s been unemployed for 70 years. “But, we’re happy. We got to the stage where we were comfortable doing what we were doing, so the business needed new blood to make it bigger and better.” Read our latest blog post to find out how the desire to make "a fizzy lolly" led to an iconic Australian-owned and operated business that spanned three generations: ➡ https://lnkd.in/g5SwcCjT #AiGroup #MemberEngagement Jennifer Thompson Tim Piper AM Deep Patel Kylie McCoy Wendy Larter
