With young drivers around the world overrepresented in vehicle crashes we look to the systems that play a role in keeping them safe. Andy Marks Steering Clear multimedia installation artwork explores driving as a rite of passage and a gateway to perceived freedom, which is often intertwined with high-risk behaviours in young drivers. We are excited about the possibility of having this new and unique artwork premiering at the Australasian Road Safety Conference this year in Hobart, Tasmania. #2024ARSC #ARSC2024 #YoungDrivers #VisionZero #RoadSafety #SponsorshipOpportunity #ArtInstallation
Co-creating transformational change for society & the planet | Circular economy start-up founder & CEO | Government advisor on climate, nature & sustainability | Keynote speaker | Board advisor | Artist
Have you ever noticed how L and P plates are often badly displayed and fall off vehicles? I have. Over four years, my observational research, carefully collecting hundreds of plates from roadsides and photographing vehicles, has culminated in Steering Clear, a new multimedia installation artwork. Steering Clear tells a story of the value society places on driving. Decoding the systems setting, the work explores how driving is viewed as a rite-of-passage, vehicles are positioned as a gateway to freedom delivered by power and speed and how this is particularly relevant to young adults (17-25 year olds) who have a greater appetite for risk and are by far the most likely age group to be involved in serious crashes. Measuring 4m x 1.5m, the installation employs a grid of found L and P plates, video and music and poses the question: ‘What if we rethink our relationship to driving?’ I aim to show my work in places relevant to the system being explored, supported by audience engagement and pathways to action. So I am excited to have the opportunity to premier Steering Clear at the leading road safety event, the Australasian Road Safety Conference in Hobart, Tasmania, accompanied by innovative audience engagement including a panel discussion with 17-25 year olds. To enable this to happen sponsorship is being sought. If you or your organisation is interested in reaching 700 road safety professionals in a unique and compelling way by supporting Steering Clear, please contact Aidan Coates Aidan.Coates@wearemci.com to find out more. The Australasian Road Safety Conference is the region’s biggest road safety conference providing an opportunity to engage, challenge and exchange ideas, discuss key issues, and where delegates share and learn from the experience, opinions and perspectives of sector leaders and their peers. The Conference brings together road safety stakeholders and decision-makers from Australasia and international jurisdictions to facilitate collaboration and information sharing.
