About us

The Royal Australian Navy is a modern military organisation operating advanced vessels and aircraft with personnel expertly trained to defend Australia and its interests, and perform a variety of maritime duties. The Navy also engages in a variety of peacetime activities such as search & rescue and humanitarian assistance. In accurately representing Australia's multi-cultural society, Navy men and women are drawn from a diverse range of social and ethnic backgrounds. From engineering to medicine, and public relations to chaplaincy, the Navy offers many fulfilling positions. Depending on their role, Navy officers and sailors can be posted to any one of 16 naval bases and command offices across Australia, home to more than 18,000 sailors and officers, though much of their time will be spent serving at sea. The Navy is equipped with a formidable fleet of ships and helicopters, featuring sophisticated technology that supports a variety of strategic needs. The Royal Australian Navy was the first of the Australian Defence services to be founded more than a century ago, born of the ships and resources of the separate colonial navies.

Knocked back, but not out 💪 Ankle reconstruction surgery and knee surgery put team sports firmly in Leading Seaman Harley Dodds' rearview mirror. The punishing blow of injury knocked him back, but not out. After seeing two mates compete at the Invictus Games, LS Dodds decided to put up his hand for the US Department of Defense's Warrior Games. "After learning that I was able to apply for the games and possibly get in the team, I just thought, why not have a crack." Now he's competing in Florida, with his parents, John and Kate Dodds, cheering him on.

BZ to the newest graduates of the Navy Indigenous Development Program (NIDP) 👏 As part of Defence's Closing the Gap initiatives, the NIDP's purpose is to provide pathways to build confidence, resilience and fitness. "This opportunity taught me that I can push myself... even when days were tough," Recruit Tyrelle Singleton said. The program provides learning opportunities as well as a cultural component with students engaging with local Indigenous communities. 📸 LSIS Ernesto Sanchez #AusNavy ADF Careers

Lieutenant Kirby Watts is coming for the title of Warrior Games Ultimate Champion at full throttle 💪 Taking on power lifting, cycling, shooting, archery, track and field, swimming and indoor rowing; LEUT Watts faces other Warrior Games athletes in a battle of physical skill and mental toughness. On a long road to recovery from a serious motorcycle crash two years ago, for her competing in the games is about accepting the nature of her injury and starting to move forward. “For me, crossing that 100m finish line at the games will be my biggest redemption," LEUT Watts said. LEUT Watts is being cheered on by her family in Orlando this week, and all of #AusNavy here at home and abroad.

#AusNavy engineer Commander Felicity Petrie is a testament to the diversity of opportunities available to women in engineering with the Royal Australian Navy. With a career spanning building warships from bare bones through to policy roles and now a position at the Australian War Memorial - CMDR Petrie has been spoiled for choice. "I've enjoyed the dynamic natures of my career hugely. You can leap from waterfront to strategic roles and back again, and to be able to do that within the same organisation is unique.” While not always a popular career choice for women in the past, over the course of her career, CMDR Petrie has seen huge strides in attracting women into STEM roles. "When I was working with the Anzac-class frigates, at one point we had females at every level from the 1-star down to me as a Lieutenant Commander... Engineers are in medicine, science, banking, heritage, environment, there really is something for everyone – we need to get that message out there.” #INWED24
