🔍 Data insights — The shutdown of the last coal power plant in Slovakia Slovakia's recent closure of its last coal power plant marks its transition towards a greener energy future. But is coal now entirely out of the grid mix? Our flow-traced data reveals that the picture is more complex. 🔦 When Slovakia started shutting down its last active coal power plant on March 28th, our data shows a clear reduction of coal production from 2.6 GW to almost zero on 30th March. Carbon intensity dropped by 35%, also due to the lower electricity demand during the Easter weekend. The following weeks in April carbon intensity averaged at 145g CO2/kWh per day, well below the average of 215g CO2/kWh in March. So did the shutdown eliminate coal generation from Slovakia’s electricity grid? In fact, no. While domestic coal generation has ceased, Slovakia still exchanges electricity with coal-dependent countries. Our flow-traced data on Slovakia’s power consumption mix shows that there is less coal-generated electricity on the grid, yet it continues to account for roughly 6% of the electricity mix in early April. Flow-tracing helps us understand a critical aspect of energy grids: electricity exchanges. It allows us to trace back the origin of electricity in real time, revealing in the case of Slovakia, that coal-generated electricity is imported from the Czech Republic and Poland. The shutdown of Slovakia’s last coal power plant is a big step towards a decarbonized electricity system. OMV Petrom has acquired a 50% stake in three solar PV projects totalling 130 MW in Romania.  As a result of investment, OMV Petrom has entered into a new partnership with Renovatio to develop, build, and operate the Romanian solar projects. “The projects for reducing our carbon footprint and that of our customers, are a central piece of our strategy,” said Christina Verchere, CEO of OMV Petrom. “About a third of the €11 billion investments by 2030 will be allocated to low and zero carbon projects.” Under the new partnership, OMV Petrom and Renovatio aim to install over 1.1 GW of renewables capacity by 2030. OMV’s transaction with Renovatio is slated to close in H2 2024, subject to the necessary approvals. According to OMV Petrom, the new solar projects have already received access to the national power transmission grid. “We are thrilled to continue and extend our partnership with OMV Petrom, aiming towards energy transition and a sustainable economy based on innovation and environmentally friendly technologies,” noted Aurel Arion, CEO of Renovatio. “The green energy to be produced by our portfolio projects is an essential step in view of a future aligned with global environmental objectives.” Franck Neel, OMV Petrom member of the Executive Board, responsible for Gas and Power, added: “We are glad to have Renovatio by our side, they have extensive expertise in renewable energy projects. Partnerships are very important for accelerating the energy transition: by combining our strengths we create higher impact overall and contribute to the change for a cleaner environment.” OMV’s latest deal follows the acquisition of a 50% stake earlier this year in Electrocentrale Borzesti, which owns renewable projects with a capacity of approximately 1 GW. #cleanenergy

Today at the EM-Power Europe Conference in Munich, I took part in the “Demand Side Flexibility - the Role of Grid Infrastructure, Market Parties and Digitalisation in Meeting Consumers’ Expectations” session alongside Andreas Jahn, Sebastian Mahlow, Dr. Frank Schlichting and Alex Schoch, and moderated by Carmen Gimeno de la Fuente. The growing electrification of our society puts Power Grids at the centre of the Energy Transition, and according to the Eurelectric “Grids for Speed” report, EU 27 countries and Norway will need to invest around 67 B€ per year from 2025 to 2050 to enable a successful Energy Transition and secure energy supply. EDP's network distribution companies operate in Brazil, Portugal, and Spain, and comprise 389k kilometres of networks and distribute 86k GWh to 11,8M connections. We are actively working to enable the Energy Transition, connecting renewable power plants, self-consumption installations, energy communities and electric mobility charging stations, using Smartgrids as the backbone to connect and provide information, and providing 400M daily data records in Portugal alone, information that we share with everyone through our Open Data Portal (e-redes.opendatasoft.com). We are conducting flexibility pilots and adopting more and more Agile practices to make the most of our resources. A special thank you to Maroš Šefčovič, executive vice-president of the European Commission, for his video remarks at our event this week (https://lnkd.in/eGeX4UXP).   I agree with his observations: "Natural gas has a role to play as a transitional fuel, something reflected in the COP28 conclusions. It will help ensure our energy security and energy equity as our economies decarbonize, given its associated emissions are half of those of coal and a third of oil.   "With Europe having taken decisive action to reach net zero by 2050, including by accelerating the clean energy transition, we also recognize the importance of natural gas notably in the medium term. And LNG, in particular, will continue to represent a significant source of gas for the EU, especially in those countries where infrastructure bottlenecks are limiting pipeline supplies.”

💧💦🌊 Just spoke at the industry conference "Restoration of Water Resources as a Concept of Ukraine's Sustainability," organized by the Ukrainian Water Association (UWA), and presented our #hydrogen project in the Odesa region. 🌊 Emphasizing the important link between water usage and the production of green hydrogen, we conducted a detailed study of the water resources in the southern part of the Odesa region in collaboration with the Institute of Geological Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, which formed the basis of our project. 🌱 With the scaling of electrolytic production to 3,000 MW, water intake for hydrogen production will amount to only 0.0036% of the water flow of the Danube River❗️❗️❗️ This demonstrates a significant reserve and the absence of any negative impact on the local ecosystem. By relying on these figures we can dispel the narratives that have been spreading recently, claiming that hydrogen energy will "dry up all of Ukraine" 👆

In Montenegro, there is a huge interest in the construction of small solar power plants on the ground. To date, only one has been put into operation of 4.5 MW, but that's why almost a hundred investors are still waiting for a permit. However, the existing distribution network has been built to provide power to end users and not in the part of new energy sources and new producers and disproportionately large interest. In order for everyone to be connected to the distribution network, at least EUR 15 million must first be invested in new infrastructure, and the current situation leaves little room for new projects.

In Europe, planned transmission capacity additions are falling short of what will be needed to integrate the ongoing surge of renewables. While new transmission is in development, renewable energy is being built faster. EU grid operators can fill the capacity gap faster by adopting a reconductoring strategy to complement new deployments. Reconductoring transmission lines with high-capacity conductors represents an underutilized pathway to modernizing and decarbonizing electricity grids globally. EU countries agreed and approved a comprehensive set of conclusions and recommendations on “Advancing Sustainable Electricity Grid infrastructure” at the European Council meeting on May 30th.  The grid infrastructure is key to increasing security of supply, resiliency to extreme climate hazards and other threats, and energy affordability and competitiveness. A decarbonized economy is a path to achieve this. The European Council’s conclusions acknowledge the needs ahead and call for further actions from Member States, the Commission, and particularly highlight the crucial role of stakeholders such as the European Investment Bank, ENTSO-E and the EU DSO Entity, and the European Environmental Agency, in a multi-combined effort and collaboration. The main calls for action from this joint EU agreement include:  - EU Grid Action Plan swift implementation;  - Facilitate anticipatory investments and bridge the gap for a grid fit for carbon neutrality;  - Make the best use of existing EU funds for transmission and distribution electricity grids;  - Strengthen financing and de-risking tools to support additional electricity grid expansion and modernization;  - Strengthen and expand distribution grids to cope with electrification and decentralisation;  - Streamline administrative planning and permitting procedures;  - Ensure security-by-design, including protection against new threats such as cybersecurity and ensure risk preparedness;  - Develop a strong European value chain and skills for grids;  - Improve functional tender designs for procurement and standardization of grid components;  - Emphasize local benefits and engage citizens and communities;  - Fair transition both in the development of skills and competences and in avoid disproportionate impacts on final consumers or taxpayers. To avoid the worst effects of #ClimateChange, we must advance the #EnergyTransition – in a joint effort. In Europe, politicians regularly come together with leaders from the energy industry at the Roundtable on Europe’s Energy Future (REEF) in Brussels. The meeting aims to ensure the right conditions across the #energy sector. ⚡   For grids, we mainly see the following five points: 1️⃣ improving long-term planning;  2️⃣ sufficient private and public sector finance for projects;  3️⃣ strengthening the supply chain;  4️⃣ harmonization and standardization of technologies and processes to achieve economies of scale;  5️⃣ functional tenders that shall focus on prescribing only the key functions of the #GridTechnologies. And as we see a faster build-out of offshore #renewables we also need to improve the resilience of meshed and interconnected grids in a multi-country approach. The transformation of our energy system is a good example of how a number of challenges can no longer be solved at the national level alone. The energy transition calls for cross-border cooperation with European and global partners. We see this every day when working on our projects. It takes instruments like the European Green Deal and the EU taxonomy to set the right course for a climate-neutral future. And it takes the European even global financial market to finance the modernization of the energy system. After all, the green transformation can only succeed with sufficient national, European and international capital. In short, we can only rise to the challenges of our time together in Europe. Let us therefore exercise our right to vote in the European elections on 9 June. There is a great deal at stake: The European Union and the euro are cornerstones of our security and our economic success and prosperity. Above all else, however, for all its differences, the EU is also a community of shared values. And a strong economy needs values such as diversity, openness and tolerance. Great resume from the discussion! Although it is really nice to speak about status and plans of Green transition there is still very important area is missing is a internal efficiency of coal and electricity production in existing mines and power plants. Balkan companies waste so much resources, so it can cover all new green production. It comes from inefficient mines, Power plants own needs, and losses in transmission and distribution. It is the time to take a breath and dive into inefficiency to reduce the need for new investment and reduce ecologic damage!
