Dubai leading the way in leveraging AI in government by appointing not one but 22 Chief AI Officers across different areas. My native Finland used to be the top in eGovernment, but has fallen outside the OECD Top 10*. It’s amazing to see the focus on improving consumer experience through implementation of AI. It reminds me of when I first started on the AI path with customer lifecycle models for market automation. Here be Prometheans! That about sums up the Global Sustainability Forum that took place yesterday in Abu Dhabi. Kudos to the organisers for putting the AI in sustainability, and for curating a well rounded panel of experts on big data, AI, and advanced sustainability analytics from a range of industries.   The key takeaway for me was the fact that most of the experts on AI have barely scratched the surface, and there is so much more to discover, especially with Abu Dhabi leading the way. I can’t help but think that In the uncertain future that lies ahead for the risk society, there’s room for both advanced tech and timeless survival skills. So I’ve got the ChatGPT app on my phone, but I’ve also got my Swiss Army knife and a swedish firesteel in the top kitchen drawer. You know—just in case. One industry that is woefully underrepresented at sustainability or climate change events is the insurance industry, and nothing bothers me more. Well one thing does—the token female on a male dominated panel—but I digress. Maybe I’m beginning to sound like a broken record, but insurance companies not only need to be brought to the forefront of the sustainability discourse, they need to actively shape it. For it’s them who have been pricing risk through historical or predictive models, and it’s them who decide the true and final cost of mitigation or adaptation. I’ve seen many tech entrepreneurs developing great products, only to have their go-to-market strategy beaten down by an industry that is risk averse, seldom consulted, and expected to underwrite the risk of new tech. “Why?” and “why not?” are both relevant questions to this point. The other bugaboo with the insurance industry is many don’t recognize the power they wield with their investment arms. Recent estimates show global insurance companies manage around $30 trillion in assets. Now that’s power in any language or currency—but I have yet to hear of an insurance company in the GCC sending the right market signals through investments in sustainable businesses. Either ways, the insurance nudge to governments and society is a strong one, and I’m committed to ensuring not that insurance companies come around the table—but that they become the table. Technology gives us cause for optimism but 2030 is around the corner and it doesn’t seem like the SDGs will be met. Nor does it seem like the 1.5 degree ambition stands on firm footing. So I’ll pitch my tent at the pessimists camp with a 3D printer and a flock of free range chickens, and for me the proverbial glass will always be half empty—how else would I let anyone fill that up? The UAE government has been proactive in adopting and promoting artificial intelligence (AI) as part of its strategy to diversify the economy and enhance public services. Already back in 2017 it presented an "AI Strategy 2031" and established the first "Ministry of Artificial Intelligence" globally. In recent weeks new announcements have been made that show additional progress and commitment towards the advancement of AI: 📰 G42 received a 1.5B USD investment from Microsoft to further strengthen UAE's position as a global technology hub 📰 The Government of Dubai the Dubai issued the Universal Blueprint for Artificial Intelligence, aimed at accelerating the adoption of AI applications But what is this blueprint for AI going to do specifically? Here are some early initiatives: 🤖 Appointment of 22 "Chief AI Officers" to the most critical government entities 🤖 Hosting of the first Global Prompt Engineering Championship, and training of 1M engineers in AI prompting (following the success of the "1M Arab coders" program) 🤖 Training for all teachers in Dubai on using advanced applications and integrating AI tools to automate tasks and personalize learning experiences This week, the Museum of the Future was host to an "AI Retreat" attended by >1,000 personnel from Government, but also major private businesses, to discuss these and other initiatives in more detail. Think of it as a super-powered advisor who sits in on meetings and offers insights based on data analysis. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝘂𝘀𝗵? Companies are obsessed with AI, but most boards lack the expertise to make intelligent decisions about it. AI observers can help bridge that gap. Not everyone's on board (pun intended): While some see this as a game-changer, others worry about blurring the lines between management and oversight. There are also questions about who's liable if the AI makes a bad call. H͟e͟r͟e͟'͟s͟ ͟t͟h͟e͟ ͟b͟r͟e͟a͟k͟d͟o͟w͟n͟: The AI observer: This isn't some robot rolling into the meeting on wheels. It's more like a software tool called 𝗕𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗡𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 that analyses data and offers real-time insights during discussions. How it works: BoardNavigator crunches a company's data and market trends to give advice. It's supposed to be especially helpful for energy, healthcare, finance, and tech companies. Over the last year, we spoke with business owners, members of oversight boards and top executives across 11 markets in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and North America. Amongst other things, it allowed us to road-test the following CX framework. AI makes it easy to launch and copy businesses, rendering many of the traditional moats useless. When everything that can be copied will be copied, survival hinges on cultivating a loyal customer base attracted by something other than utility. This framework, used to design multi-dimensional experiences worthy of loyalty, helped review corporate strategies and redesign customer experiences in companies as diverse as AI developers, FMCG multinationals a luxury fashion house and a steelmaker. Saudi Kingdom statement on its AI leadership intent. Surely relevant yet sounding a little as if the 12.1 million b/d in total liquid fuels in 2022, up 12% from 10.8 million b/d in 2021 has finally found another playground for energy consumption whilst the world is trying to turn greener... What about adding suggestions on how and where the AI Gigafactories should establish world wide, and perhaps suggest using innovative energy forms and fostering new engineering and chip building skillsets in order to address the evident need that the new AI spring has to find new horizons and investments to cut consumption at a fraction? Or we might end up having an Intelligent and Robotized Disneyland...but with no human children left to play in it. Thanks Fahad AlTurief for sharing.

Apr 17: Quotes and news 🔸 "Climate change is a lot like death. We all understand it's inevitable, but few of us truly accept it." The UAE is currently grappling with the aftermath of unprecedented rainfall, the heaviest on record since data collection began in 1949. This "historic weather event" caused significant flooding across the nation, particularly in Dubai. Dubai International Airport was temporarily shut down. The rainfall, exceeding an average year's worth of precipitation within 24 hours, is attributed to a combination of factors. Cloud seeding, a technique employed by the UAE to augment precipitation, may have played a role. The sudden influx of water overwhelmed infrastructure designed for arid conditions. Homes were flooded, vehicles were abandoned, and iconic landmarks like the Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates experienced water damage. 🔸 "Real problem is not population explosion, but what the population is doing." Estimates suggest India's population has reached a staggering 144 crore. This massive population is young, with a significant portion (24%) between the ages of 0-14. There's another 17% in the 15-19 age range, bringing the total under 20 to 41%. Around 26% of the population falls in the 10-24 age group. Looking at the working-age population, those between 15-64 make up a robust 68%, translating to roughly 97 crore people. Senior citizens make up a smaller portion (7%) at 10 crore. 🔸 "Poverty is not an accident. It is man-made and can be removed by the actions of human beings." A new report exposes Nestlé for adding sugar and honey to infant milk and cereal products sold in developing countries. This practice directly contradicts international guidelines established to fight childhood obesity and chronic diseases. Tests revealed added sugars like sucrose and honey in Nido, a follow-up milk formula for children over one, and Cerelac, a cereal marketed for babies as young as six months old. These findings are particularly troubling considering Nestlé avoids adding sugar to similar products in their European markets.
