How can architects balance creativity and practicality when solving design problems?
I agree, design is a completely iterative process. Once all input is considered by the different stakeholders relevant to a project, design concepts are refined to meet the exact requirements of each stakeholder. For example, if you’re designing a sales showroom, you will need to sit with the sales team that will use this showroom and understand the entire standard operational procedure of this sales team. Once you understand this, you will be able to adapt and tweak things like the circulation flow of your layout, considering where a client is greeted by the sales representative, where do they show him the product, where and how do they sit to discuss a potential deal?

How can architects balance creativity and practicality when solving design problems?
In my experience, its very important for architects to understand the context vis-a-vis building use and project criteria. For example, a residential development versus a museum would require criteria that is substantially varying. The best tool to understand context is what is referred to as a “building program”. This is an extensive list of all required functions by the client/users of the building in relation to its use. In the case of a museum, installation space would definitely be in the building program, whist in a residential, we would probably see items like health club, lobby, etc. Architects have to almost become detectives and conduct interviews with every type of user of the building in order to form a reliable building program
