I'm delighted to announce that our paper titled: "Consensus-based Recommendations for the Implementation of Health Technology Assessment in the United Arab Emirates" has been published online in (Value in Health Regional Issues journal), on behalf of the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR). Healthcare research and development has accelerated at an unprecedented rate creating a challenge even for high-income countries to finance all new technologies. Health technology assessment (HTA) aims to maximize health gains out of available resources. We developed the first Emirati consensus-based recommendations for HTA implementation in the UAE. These first Emirati recommendations encompass training graduate and postgraduate on HTA, public funding for HTA appraisals and expanding the scope of HTA to non-pharmaceuticals, establishing central coordination of the HTA bodies, and having an explicit soft cost-effectiveness threshold for common technologies and a higher threshold for orphan drugs. It has been my honor to lead this project, which spanned 2 years until publication, with an incredible team working at different institutions comprising physicians from various specialties, pharmacists, and health economists (both local and international). Special thanks to Prof. Zoltan Kalo and his team for their guidance and support. The National Committee for the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) held its fourth meeting, chaired by Her Highness Dr. Muna Al Said. During the meeting, the committee discussed important steps towards developing the National Multisectoral NCD Action Plan for the years 2016 to 2030. This plan aims to track progress and address the significant burden of NCDs and their associated risk factors. The committee also reviewed key recommendations from WHO experts on nutrition, who visited Oman in mid-June, and discussed evidence from various studies conducted by the Department of Nutrition. These studies highlighted the high quantities of salt, sugar, and fat in food products in Oman. Oman’s multisectoral engagement in the area of NCDs is empowered by high-level commitments and a coordinated, evidence-based approach. The discussions continue to focus on aligning priorities and plans with positive health outcomes—an alignment essential for measurable progress and meeting the targets set for 2025 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). #NCDs #MultisectoralEngagement #NonCommunicableDiseases

It is critical to share lessons learned and promising practices from the Covid-19 outbreak, both to continue to manage Covid-19 transmission and prepare for future pandemics. Our Colleague at RCSI Bahrain, Prof. Manaf Alqahtani, is actively collaborating with the Bahrain Ministry of Health in order to ensure data-driven policies to combat Covid-19. In a recent review article, Prof. Alqahtani and colleagues provided a detailed outline of events as well as a comprehensive picture of the successes and challenges of the Covid-19 response in Bahrain. The country implemented robust public health measures, including early vaccination programs, and achieved well-established control of the pandemic. Low case rates suggest the success of their response, with lessons learned to guide future preparedness efforts.

📣 New paper published 📣 This work was led by one of my PhD students - Hamad Abdel Hadi - and is part of his PhD dissertation. Co-authors are Faiha Eltayeb, Sara Al Balushi, Joanne Daghfal, and my colleague Faraz Ahmed. Evaluation of Hospital Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs: Implementation, Process, Impact, and Outcomes, Review of Systematic Reviews Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs (ASP) were introduced in healthcare as a public health priority to promote appropriate prescribing of antimicrobials, to reduce adverse events related to antimicrobials, as well as to control the escalating challenges of antimicrobial resistance. To deliver aimed outcome objectives, ASPs involve multiple connected implementation process measures. A systematic review was conducted to evaluate both concepts of ASPs. Guided by PRISMA frames, published systematic reviews (SR) focusing on ASPs restricted to secondary and tertiary healthcare were evaluated over the past 10 years involving all age groups. Out of 265 identified SR studies, 63 met the inclusion criteria. The majority were conducted in Europe and North America, with limited studies from other regions. In the reviewed studies, all age groups were examined, although they were conducted mainly on adults when compared to children and infants. Both process and outcomes measures of ASPs were examined equally and simultaneously through 25 different concepts, dominated by efficacy, antimicrobial resistance, and economic impact, while information technology as well as role of pharmacy and behavioral factors were equally examined. The main broad conclusions from the review were that, across the globe, ASPs demonstrated effectiveness, proved efficacy, and confirmed efficiency, while focused evaluation advocated that developed countries should target medium- and small-sized hospitals while developing countries should continue rolling ASPs across healthcare facilities. Additionally, the future of ASPs should focus on embracing evolving information technology to bridge the gaps in knowledge, skills, and attitude, as well as to enhance appropriate decision making. I am proud and delighted to share that our recent paper "A national evaluation analysis and expert interview study of real-world data sources for research and healthcare decision-making" has been published in #ScientificReports. In this work, we performed an evaluation of Austrian real-world data (#RWD) sources, aiming to bridge knowledge gaps and provide valuable insights for research, development, and policy decision-making in the healthcare sector. Our evaluation involved a multilateral query approach, crosschecked against previously published criteria, and direct interviews with representative RWD source samples. This article provides an overview of 73 out of 104 RWD sources in a national legislative setting where major attempts are made to enable secondary use of RWD. Some of the key findings highlighted the challenges associated with data silos, variable standardization efforts, and governance issues. These findings underscore the need for a national health data strategy and a robust data governance framework, which can significantly enhance RWD-based research and support regulatory decision-making. Glory to God! Delighted to share our latest collaborative article titled "Trends and disparities in colorectal cancer hospitalizations and outcomes: a 10-year joinpoint trend study" The study examined colorectal cancer (CRC) hospitalizations, spanning a decade and identified significant trends and disparities in outcomes. By examining the prevalence of CRC hospitalizations, we found an alarming uptrend over the study period. Concurrently, we observed a marginal decrease in the mean age of patients admitted for CRC treatment. Demographically, male gender and persons of White race consistently constituted the majority across the study duration, prompting a deeper exploration into the factors contributing to this demographic predominance. However, despite an overall decline in inpatient mortality rates, subgroup analyses unveiled notable discrepancies. Men exhibited a significantly higher mortality rate, signaling potential gender-specific variables influencing patient outcomes. Furthermore, racial disparities were apparent, with Black individuals experiencing the highest mortality rates. Our work underscores the urgency of targeted interventions to address these disparities across screening, diagnosis, and treatment modalities. By highlighting these sociodemographic inequities, our study serves as a resounding call for healthcare stakeholders to collaborate in implementing effective strategies aimed at improving survival outcomes and reducing disparities in CRC care. Moreover, our analysis of healthcare utilization dynamics revealed intriguing trends. While hospitalization length decreased, total hospital charges exhibited an upward trajectory. These findings illuminate evolving patterns in healthcare utilization and underscore the economic burden associated with CRC care. In conclusion, our study not only contributes to the scientific understanding of CRC but also advocates for concerted efforts to address sociodemographic disparities in CRC outcomes. By elucidating these disparities and their implications for patient care, our work aims to catalyze actionable change within the healthcare landscape, ultimately enhancing the quality of CRC care and improving patient outcomes. Simply, the core function of Public health is characterized as assessment ( epidemiology and biostatistics), policy (formulation, implementation and evaluation-behavioral abc social science, Heath policy and management) and assurance ( essential pubic health services ( public health care development (immunization,disease screening ), implementation and evaluation). This Basics of Public Health Core Competencies materials below, simply describes these core functions of Public Health, with significant examples, and the application of these inititives and explanation in Certified Public Heath as well as pubic Heath training and mentoring . Since epigenomic determinants of Heath (EDH) is not reflected in this publication, the Jones and Bartlett Publishers is anticipating a second edition of this book soon. The SPH and public health program (PHP) with passion and commitment in epigenomic public health, especially HBUC are welcome to contact the author for their advancement in this direction! Implementation of Health Technology Assessment in the Middle East We are excited to announce that Syreon Middle East has recently received positive feedback from prestigious journals for the acceptance of two significant health policy papers focused on developing Health Technology Assessment (HTA) systems in the United Arab Emirates and the Sultanate of Oman, highlighting our ongoing commitment in shaping health policy strategies in the Middle East. As an initial step, our team successfully coordinated a regional HTA roadmap across the Middle East, a foundational step towards standardized HTA practices. Our recent publication with Nasr Eldin Elwali in BMC Cancer, "Pancreatic cancer in Saudi Arabia (2005-2020): increasing trend!", sheds light on concerning trends in pancreatic cancer for both men and women in Saudi Arabia. ⭕️ Key findings: 📌 Mirroring global trends: Similar to most countries, Saudi Arabia is experiencing a rise in pancreatic cancer incidence and mortality rates. 📌 Predominantly affecting an aging population: The data suggests pancreatic cancer primarily impacts older Saudi citizens. 📌 Incidence rates compared: In 2020, Saudi Arabia's Age-Standardized Rates (ASRs) for pancreatic cancer were 3.0 for males and 1.8 for females. These figures align with the Gulf region (2.4-4.2 ASR) but remain lower than Europe (7.8 ASR) and North America (8.0 ASR). 📌 Regional disparities: Notably, significant variations exist in pancreatic cancer incidence across different regions within Saudi Arabia. 📌 Gender differences observed: Our research also highlights variations in pancreatic cancer incidence between Saudi men and women. ‼️The significance of our findings: This study offers valuable insights for understanding and addressing pancreatic cancer in Saudi Arabia. The rising incidence necessitates ongoing research and public health initiatives.
