Abstract
The first section of this chapter discusses India and the First World War. The second section considers the Home Rule Movement. The third section examines the Montagu-Chelmsford Report. The fourth section considers repression to match reform. The sixth section discusses Mahatma Gandhi. The seventh section discusses the anti-Rowlatt Satyagraha and the Amritsar massacre. The last section considers the Khilafat Movement. Even before the Defence of India Act was passed, popular agitation against the Rowlatt Bills had begun. This developed into a nationwide campaign that soon outgrew its original concern with ‘lawless laws’ that were never actually enforced, and lifted Indian nationalism to a higher level. The leader of this movement that changed Indian and world history was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, renowned already as the Mahatma.
