HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) - One of the hottest days of the year is concluding with what promises to be the warmest night of the summer.

Lacking rain, overnight lows will hold onto 80 all the until dawn in downtown locations. This is likely the end of the third heat wave of the season with a strong westerly wind blowing less hot air our way on Thursday. In the sub- tropics (including Miami, Puerto Rico, Cancun and the Bahamas) what takes the edge off the heat in early summer is the famous trade winds that blow. So even a 95-degree day can feel fine, so they say!

All this is a prelude to a few days in the 80s fanned by brisk westerly winds (our pseudo trade winds). But the trade winds subside, and a new heat wave is slated to start on Friday in time for the start of the Putnam County Fair.

Tuesday’s late day high temperatures made the mid to upper 90s across the region including at the Lawrence County fairgrounds in Proctorville. Credible reports over 100 degrees were received from many coalfield towns, with Logan leading the way. Afternoon highs at the 84 Lumber Yard and Addison Addition in Logan confirmed the triple-digit heat.

Looking ahead, as Hurricane Beryl’s remnants pass to our west and north, the best we can hope for is a passing thunderstorm tonight or Wednesday morning. Then the sun will shine and the wind will blow all day long from a friendlier direction. So highs on Wednesday will scale back into the 80s with a refreshing feel.

Thursday will also trend cozy with sunshine, though the winds will fade away. Highs in the 80s with a high sunburn index.
