NITRO, W.Va. (WSAZ) - A well-traveled bridge is undergoing a makeover. The SPC-4 Harold “Skip” Greusser Memorial Bridge, also known as the 40th Street Bridge, connecting Nitro and Cross Lanes has been under construction since Monday creating detours for drivers to take instead.

With the construction of the bridge going on, the city of Nitro has created emergency plans to make sure emergency vehicles get to where they need to be, as fast as possible.

Joe Stevens, executive director of the Nitro Convention & Visitor’s Bureau, said, “We’ve been in close contact with the Department of Transportation officials to determine what was going to be our detour route, especially for our first responders, police, fire, rescue, that sort of thing. And we’ve come up with a plan that we’ll be able to respond in a quick and safe fashion.”

These projects take time, but with school coming up and buses needing to travel the bridge, the WVDOT has told Stevens it will be open when school begins.

“August 16th, those yellow buses are gonna be on the road. We’re being told that the bridge will be open,” Stevens said.
