SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) - It’s not how you start but how you finish even at an all-star high school football game. The South Cardinals beat the North Bears by a final of 21-20 as the Cards scored all of their points in the second half and overtime. The North squad led 7-0 until Mingo Central quarterback Chris Ross found Clay County’s BJ Williams for a 44 yard touchdown which tied the game late in the third quarter. The Cardinals took the lead on their next possession when Scott’s Matt Frye found Bluefield’s RJ Hairston which made it 14-7 in the fourth quarter.

The North then tied it up at 14 and eventually sent the game to overtime. South quarterback Sawyer VanMatre scored the opening touchdown and that was followed by an extra point to make it 21-14. The North scored but went for a game winning two point conversion and that was denied by the South’s defense.

Here are the highlights from the game held at South Charleston High School.
