BURLINGTON, Ky. (WXIX) - A Northern Kentucky woman was charged with assault after her daughter was taken to the hospital suffering a suspected fentanyl overdose, according to court documents.

Boone County EMS responded to a home in the 1600 block of Deer Run Drive on Nov. 26 on the report of a baby having a seizure.

According to a complaint from the Boone County District Court, the baby wasn’t breathing when first responders arrived at the home. Emergency crews began life-saving measures, including CPR with assistance from a bag valve to keep the child breathing while they transported her to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. When the baby arrived, medical crews gave the baby a dose of Narcan to fight the effects of a suspected opioid overdose.

According to Boone County Sheriff’s deputies and social workers from Children’s Health and Family Services, Brianne Ehilinger - the child’s mom - and another adult at the residence, Shawn Gardner - said they had used powdered fentanyl prior to the baby’s medical emergency. They also admitted to having fentanyl in the residence.

Ehlinger told officials she had used fentanyl, then cleared the baby’s mouth afterward, believing the baby might have swallowed something from the floor.

Ehlinger, 30, was charged with first-degree assault, wanton endangerment and endangering the welfare of a minor. She was held on a $100,000 bond at the Boone County Detention Center.

Gardner, 34, was charged with first-degree assault, wanton endangerment and endangering the welfare of a minor. He was held on $100,000 bond at the Boone County Detention Center.
