Jiminy Glick Takes Over 'Jimmy Kimmel'

Everyone is talking about that presidential debate—and rightfully so, because wow, what was that?! But I want to take a moment to talk about another wild ride from this week: Martin Short guest hosting Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Now let me just be perfectly clear, when I say "wild ride," I mean it in the best of ways, because whoa, Martin Short more than lived up to his status of comedy legend this week. From wild interviews with Steve Martin and Melissa McCarthy to bringing back his insane character Jiminy Glick, I can't help but watch him and wonder, have we been sleeping on Martin Short?

Of course, he's loved and very popular thanks to his Emmy-winning Hulu series Only Murders in the Building, but I also find not a lot of people aren't aware of the vast catalog of characters Short has given us. I posted a meme of Short's Jiminy Glick interviewing Sean Hayes, and I found a lot of people weren't aware of his Glick character. Sure, people know about his performance in the Father of the Bride movies, but they seem unaware of his work in things like Three Amigos, SCTV and Saturday Night Live. This is just sad, but I think I know why.

Short is unlike any of his other comedy peers in the sense that he's one of the last great sketch artists who aren't concerned with fame, only with character. Rarely the lead, Short seemingly is more comfortable in the obscure, the weird, the side characters who move the story along. The kicker is, when Short is involved, you often find yourself only remembering his brief appearance instead of whatever the lead is doing.

To find proof of this, look at his work on shows like Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Mars Attacks, and Father of the Bride. He's even able to stand out on dramas like Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and The Morning Show. The best thing about Martin Short is that he's your favorite comedian's favorite comedian. That says a lot about Short.

So, to see him being praised as much as he is this week for guest-hosting Jimmy Kimmel Live! is just such a gift to a longtime fan like me. And it makes me even more excited for the new season of Only Murders in the Building, scheduled to drop on August 24. I would suggest watching some of Short's work this weekend, especially to distract you from whatever that presidential debate was.
