The picturesque city, known for its historic waterways and granaries, has been named the cheapest European city break for a 24-hour holiday.

Flights from Luton Airport to the quaint city of Bydgoszcz in Northern Poland can be found for as low as £29.

Its Old Town boasts an array of architectural styles including Art Nouveau, Gothic and Renaissance buildings.

Bydgoszcz is renowned for its canal and network of waterways that stretch west all the way to Rotterdam.

Nestled at a fork in the river Brda is Mill Island which once served as the hub of industry in Bydgoszcz during medieval times.

The remaining mill buildings from the 1800s have been lovingly restored and transformed into tourist attractions from which one can enjoy the surrounding open green spaces and clear waters.

Rowboats are available for hire for a leisurely trip along the river, or you can explore the specialty shops, or simply soak up the serene green space at the water's edge.

The Museum of Soap and Dirt is a quirky attraction detailing the history of hygiene-related items, from cast-iron bathtubs to vintage detergent adverts, the museum gives an in-depth exploration of how the modern world of hygiene and cleaning came to be.

Another pretty location in the city is the Old Market Square, where King Casimir II the Great founded Bydgoszcz back in 1346.

Ever since, the square has served as a social hub of the city, hosting concerts, public gatherings and a wealth of outdoor seating for bars and restaurants.

Since becoming an inactive shipping lane, the Bydgoszcz Canal has been favoured for lounging about in the sun.

Travelling up and down the Canal you will also see some of the beautiful architecture Bydgoszcz has to offer. The canal also features five restored locks.

Dining in Bydgoszcz is a delight, with a plethora of eateries offering the chance to dive into local dishes like pierogi (potato dumplings) or goabki (stuffed cabbage). The city's pubs offer a selection of Polish beers and wines, often at wallet-friendly prices.

Its compact size makes it easy to navigate on foot, but for those who prefer not to pound the pavement, public transport options abound.

Buses, trams and trains can whisk you anywhere in the city, while car hire starts from just £11.91 per day.

The best time to visit Bydgoszcz is between May and September when the city basks in its warmest weather. While summer can bring rain, temperatures can climb to a comfortable 20C.

Alternatively, Christmas in Bydgoszcz is a magical experience, with twinkling lights adorning the streets and festive activities and markets drawing crowds.

Accommodation options are plentiful, with the most popular hotels located in the city centre. Whether you're after luxury or budget-friendly lodgings favoured by backpackers, there's something for everyone.
