Italy's Dolomites are a a UNESCO World Heritage Site, famous for the limestone pinnacles that tower from the valley floor and dramatically change colour throughout the day.

The mountains are full of hiking trails offering breathtaking views of the alpine scenery and are a magnet for walkers from the world.

Perhaps one of the most popular trails is the Alta Via 1 (AV1) which runs for 75 miles with an elevation gain of 24,000ft.

Known as the “fairyland of the Alps”, it runs between the forest-nestled Lago di Braies and the town of Belluno, with its Renaissance-era old centre.

The trail leads hikers past spectacular alpine lakes, dramatic rock formations and lush green meadows awash with wildflowers.

Although it is extremely popular, hikers should be aware that the AV1 goes through relatively remote areas, with some highly exposed ridges

Along the way are mountain huts known as rifugios, where weary hikers can rest up and recharge their batteries.

People normally have to share a dorm (though some private rooms are available) but the venues offer delicious food, good company, and magnificent Dolomites views.

The trail is strewn with reminders of the First World War, when Italian and Austro-Hungarian/German forces faced off for four years here.

The peaks still bear witness to this dark period of European history, with trenches, tunnels, and gun emplacements strewn across them.

Walkers can visit Lagazoui, which is renowned for its wartime tunnels and WW1 mine warfare.

Visitors can explore the extensive tunnels built by the Italian troops at the time for protection.

The trail leads past two beautiful lakes - Lago di Braies with its emerald green water and towering limestone cliffs surrounding on three sides.

Lago Coldai, which is situated at 7,030ft. After a long day, some brave hikers take a dip in the cold water.

The best time to hike the Alta Via 1 is from mid-June to mid-September. Peak hiking season is July and August during the European summer holidays.

The highest point is 9,029ft, but generally, the trail stays below 7,500ft.

Therefore winter and spring snow has usually melted on the trails by June, when most mountain huts are open.

During the months of June, July, and August, the weather is very predictable. The days usually start with clear blue skies, by late morning the clouds begin to build up, and in the early afternoon thunderstorms roll in.

It’s smart to leave the huts right after breakfast and pre-pack before to avoid being caught in thunderstorms.

The weather tends to be the most stable in September. Although the temperatures at night and mornings are below freezing, the days are still pleasantly warm and the skies often stay blue throughout the whole day.
